Seriously, can't we have a seperate forum for these threads (and NOT OOPE), one which I can avoid reading ?
The obituary forum or something ?
These threads are so bloody depressing.
I'm prefectly serious btw and not hating on the recently deceased.

I think it would be more depressing if EVE needed a seperate forum for deaths.

Funny how I'm expected to give a **** suddenly when it turns out that the new corpse the planet owns used to play Eve.

You are not expected to give a ****, no one blames you if you decide not to react to the news of the death of someone you don't know. Still it probably would be expected that an adult would have the common courtesy to do it quietly. Talking **** for shock value and trying to display as much apathy as humanly possible, when talking about the passing of someone is childish to say the least.

Start with yourself. No one gives a damn about your opinion on the matter so please make topics in right forum channel (OoPE) so we can sucessfully avoid them, just like most dumb threads in GD.

A few of them are probably fake anyway, we had that type of stuff on the Dark Age of Camelot boards. "xyz died irl" ... 3 months later he is back playing and its a joke. Anyway even if it isn't, let his/her corp send a mail out or their alliance, don't want to be reading morbid irrelavant things on our internet spaceship game forum.

True that.
I myself stay silent on these topics. It's a bit of an uncomfortable silence, really, as I don't really know what to say (is it a troll? is it real?). If it's real, the trolling is only going to hurt the remaining family members reading it; and if it's fake, it's just a sick troll.
So, a huge part of me keeps thinking RL obituaries don't really have a place on these fora.

You hurt my feeling *cries*
Of course, the people who post this crap in GD don't read OOPE so no use posting there...

Edited by: Meryl SinGarda on 21/07/2011 12:47:03 This can be a really touchy topic. Although, as human beings, we're not really capable of feeling emotion toward someone or something we've never come into contact with. It's how our brains work.
The trolling isn't really necessary. I'd say this is the result of one's own extreme negativity, because I can't see why anyone would think you're cool if you're trolling in a thread about the passing of someone's friend.
Now, do they belong in this forum? Maybe, maybe not.
I know, for a fact, that you do not ever want to hold a funeral ingame. (sort of like a roleplay funeral, you know?)
If anyone was around when a player passed in WoW, they held a funeral ingame... and everyone got ganked. A video resulted and is probably one of the most popular WoW videos.
Not to say that we're on the same level as WoW kids, I could maybe see this happening, regardless.
Also, if I die tomorrow, I'm not sure I want anyone I know coming here and parading word of my death around the forums. I wouldn't want people to think negatively toward me after I'm gone. Fly safe, Die hard |

It has nothing to do with being cool whatsoever. A lot of people feel vehemently about suicide. The only thing that ****es me off worse is drunk driving deaths. You should lose your license for life the first time you get a DUI and prison for life the second. Self inflicted death is disgusting IMHO, and millions of people agree with that sentiment. . Adapt and overcome or become a monkey on an evolution poster.

Talk about a complete lack of empathy, do you think people commit suicide just to upset you?. You must have some pretty high thoughts about yourself, if you believe that your personal happiness is more important then the death of a fellow human being.

Let's stay on topic here...
The issue is being badgered (prob wrong word, non-native english speaker) about people dying you don't know or care about resulting in bad vibes being handed out to the community at large who do not care for that. Kinda like finding Jehova witnesses at your door.

I'm rather surprised this topic is discussed at all.
Who in their right mind would announce another's death on a public forum of gamers? Trolls be damned, that's downright disrespectful of the family and the deceased.
The death of a player in EVE, prominent or not, can be broadcasted to those who actually know that person - if you do not know the deceased close contacts, you are not privileged to broadcast that information. Example: my best friend wouldn't have a clue who to tell in EVE if I passed, but he'd know to inform another friend of mine who IS active in EVE and knows all my EVE buddies that aren't local to me in RL. THAT person would then inform my buddies, both in and out of corp, privately, of my passing.
Forums have no place in that process, and likewise, that process has no place in the forums.

I did not say that (I think people kill themselves to **** me off) and your inference is an obvious troll. I realize you made it because you think I am trolling, but it doesn't make it right.
As far as a "complete lack of empathy", you obviously don't even understand what the word means. I could not possibly feel strongly about it if I had no empathy. And you don't have 100% empathy for the guy or you would off yourself also, if you felt exactly the same way. . Adapt and overcome or become a monkey on an evolution poster.

You mean like what you share with the community, that you have a hard time dealing with death, and would prefer that it was not mentioned on the forums. It may not directly cause bad vibes, but i think it's safe to say the majority gives a rats ass about your opinion.

Empathy is the power of understanding and imaginatively entering into another person's feelings, if you think suicide is disgusting, you clearly lack the ability to understand what drives a person to kill him self, or put yourself in the place of the people left behind.

There is nothing wrong with a players passing being announced on the forum. After all, I'm sure he loved the game. It's no worse than obituary announcements in your local paper. I certainly wouldn't mind, but I intend to live forever so moot point.
The real problem here is the immature Yank and Euro kids who have little respect or experience with death. I still remember people would stop in the streets and doff their caps to funeral precession's for total strangers in the late 70's. How times change.
Manners, respect and a little social etiquette costs nothing, so what's the problem with today's society?
