I've been wondering about why I can't generate any interest in the pvp side in EVE, and I wonder if it has something to do with the way I came to the game ...I'm in my 50's so as a youngster and teenager didn't have any electronic games to play and so was brought up on 'non-conflict' boardgames (Monopoly anybody?), then after joining the Army I got into wargames. But of course they are primarily strategic games, not pvp in the way EVE defines it.
Even when I got into computer games 8 or 10 years ago, I've generally played RTS games, not FPS...so I wonder if this track record does in fact act as a brake on any interest in strict pvp, which is (to me anyway) a completely unrealistic format and game mechanic within the EVE Universe (but thats a side issue, not the main point of the post).
Don't get me wrong, if the corp my main toons are in get dec'd I'm straight into a combat ship and will fight to defend us! But just going lo-sec in the hope of a 1 minute pvp fight just doesn't make any sense.
Or, maybe it's just me...

I enjoy my pvp the most when in a mega or hyperion. Perhaps you need to find a ship to fall in love with like I did.

I am a 29yr old IT Consultant, played eve for what will be 8 years in november, i think I have done every thing that can be done in eve, bar flying a titan! I think it comes down to how long you play eve and what you enjoy.
you like to fight you jump right into pvp but over the years you will do other things to try it out you may like mining but not many people will stay just mining there whole life in game.
I started out doing some mining, then missions, then low sec, then 0.0, then empire wars, then 0.0 again, then wh, then empire, then 0.0 etc etc just depends on how much time :)

That's because of distance to engagement in desert is far longer than most other battlefield situations. Or in layman's terms, there aren't many ****ing trees and bushes blocking line of sight, so you can see and engage a hostile from far further away. It means you can see the enemy clearly through a SUSAT but through a naked eye they are small ant people. I wouldn't say that doesn't mean it's not PVP?
Also it tends to be unsavoury to film and broadcast the bad guys getting shot at.

Unless you had races with your family members/friends on who can pass Go! the fastest, I say you'll have a good grip on how to be competitive and win against other players
PvP isn't just limited to ship on ship action.

Monopoly IS a conflict game, your wallet gets ganked if you land on a developed square of the opposition, get ganked too many times and its gameover. There is no otherway to finish or win the game.
I have seen 12 yro carebears as well as 50yro FCs in my 8 years of EVE career. Players come from different countries and meta cultures, which are the primary 2 factors that effect their choices and behaviour in EVE.

For me, at 56, I've been blowing things up, vaporizing things, smokin' and chokin' baddies longer than a lot of current EVE players have been alive. I have destroyed with bows and arrows, six guns, lasers, atomic thingamajiggers, geez...hand to hand, "when will they show the blood splats?" And, I can tell you I have all that aggressive type A, alpha male adrenalin junky stuff out of my system.
Of course (uproar ensues) you have to get there to understand, and most current EVE players don't expect to live past forty. (Do THEY have a shock coming!)
Now, I'm into building and creating. Taking nothing and making something. I go for cohesion and logical, practical applicability. There's always some kid who's king of the sandbox, gonna run up and kick it over, then smugly walk away like he accomplished something. I've broken a dozen big boy legs over that. And, now, frankly, I feel the need no longer. It's more amusing to watch and wait for his stupidity to catch up with him. And...I know it will. It always does.
The only real PvP game, for now and evermore is and will be CHESS. And, don't try that king's opening. There isn't a variation on it I haven't seen.

Edited by: Hannibal Ord on 27/07/2011 11:03:09 I think your op describes basically that you had a bit of boring childhood not playing with guns fashioned out of wood in the woods or Cow boys and Indians or whatever and instead you were forced to play inside with games about property and land. I can assure you, my 67 yr old father played a variety of outdoor pretend shooty shooty with fashioned toys and also the small variety of post world war 2 board games which involved smiting the Nartzee's etc. As well as model aeroplanes.
So electronic games or not, you were simply brought up to be a carebear and your age means nothing since I've caught my Dad owning on COD (which was surreal I must say).
It could be you simply lack the killer instinct of what separates a true warrior from a meek nobody.

Yes i think it does , I can't talk about every one else but for myself , i started playing paper and dice roleplaying games in the early 80 's mainly Ad&d, later pendragon warhammerfantasy roleplay, and many othersabout the same time i also played Battletech wh 40K later i switched to tabletop historicaal wargamming , it is a suprise i eventually got married and had children aswell, PC games mainly started in the late 90 s after we had kids and mainly wargames like the old talonsoft campaign series,HPS games. so in short i am no stranger toward roleplaying in eve tho at the moment i am running a solo corp with my other accounts. most of the time i have another view on the Eve universe and playstyle and in general more carefull compared with other players who never played any rp before . lastly i have the feeling your immersion is greater than someone who never played any other rp game
Small edit , as a wargammer all the planning and logistics isn't much difference as planning and gathering supplis like in a game as gary grisby s pacific war ---------------------------------------------- God knows everything but a true amarrian knows everything even better |

I suspect you've read a bit too much in my original post about my childhood - although I may only have been brought up on boardgames, I'm by nature a very competitive person and have played football, table tennis, swum, and (shock horror for a Brit) baseball - my favourite sport as it happens - to a reasonably high level: semi-pro in football.
So its not that I don't have the competitive gene, but it just seems to have shut off where Eve pvp is concerned...

Edited by: Meryl SinGarda on 27/07/2011 11:51:29 I play mostly casually, dabbling in asteroid mining, exploration and mission running. Every once in a while, maybe on a weekend, I'll jump into my PVP specialized character and go on a roam. Usually with alcohol involved and sometimes streaming to a friend or two, so they can;
A. Watch me die. B. Watch the Universe fly by in a million warp tunnels C. Watch me kill someone, in the 1000/1 odds of it actually happening! :D
The reason for this play-style is due mostly to the fact that I work a full-time job and really don't have much time to myself outside of work, unless of course it's the weekend.
I'm also a writer. I'm supposed to be writing a sequel and an off-shoot.
Oh yeah, sleep. Yes, sleep. Can't forget that.

actually its just your rules of engagement, keep shooting even when nobody is seen (or even there). its called supressing fire and its no problem cause you got more then enough ammo anyway

I played Elite on the BBC Micro as a teen. Played other games as a young adult (Wing Commander & Star Wars X-Wing & Tie Fighter most notably) but nothing ever really lived up to Elite for me - too much focus on following a storyline, not enough personal freedom to do your own thing.
For me Eve is Elite with nobs on, all growed up and with serious attitude, and making the most of 21st C computing power. I love it.
Coming to the OP's point, for me right now I still want and enjoy that Elite-style freedom; so I tend to focus on PVE and I don't want to be driven by someone else's goals.
I will fight to defend what I've got (and I'm getting better at that too), and I'm sure one day I will get bored of PVE and get more into PVP, but for now I'm happy just playing grownup Elite.
If I could have one wish in Eve? Player-driven expansion of the known universe (i.e. give players a way to find totally new systems to add to the game - sorta superexploration but with very low chance of success).

I am well into my 50's as well, and it isn't the Pvp that I find off setting as much as it is the attitude of the other PvPers that I find trying. There seems to me anyway, a big maturity gap in the Pvpers and the Rest of the gamers. That is not to say any one attitude is right or wrong, just that there comes an age where trash talking is just childish. Just my opinion.

ORIGIN is dead m8, they were subject to a hostile take over, the team scattered I think, WC will NEVER come back. Its the new business model now, if u cant beat the product beat the company so the market is forced to buy YOUR crappy product.
Corner market, make profit, basic economics really. Through all the garbage that is being produced maybe 5-10 games are worth playing, and mostly 1-2 MMOs.
These huge companies paid so much money on cornering the market they cant risk of producing something that is new and a risk.. only small companies like CCP can accomplish that and when they grow they tend to take less risks and just sell good'ol stereotype copies of things already done a million times. Its like Hollywood, risk averters at all cost, whenn will transformers 7, terminator 12 come out??

I agree with that completely. I agree with the concept of PVP, to defend your corp, to take over systems etc.
I don't like the gate campers with bubbles or the people who just go round ganking people for the sake of it, but I accept it. What I really dont like is the trash talk that most people adopt with it.
For me, PVP should be done for a reason and not just for kicks. I think CCP should implement a "Battleground" concept where perhaps pilots undergo virtual realtiy combat in pre designed ships. Now there shouldn't be any sort of reward to this, as there is no risk involved. It would be a great way to get more people into PVP and more importantlty FUN.

I dunno that was the first real PC gaming system and there was plenty of PvP. Also plenty of board games were PvP, Stratego, Battleship etc etc. But I think the only thing relative here is wisdom of years. You would defend your corp but not go to lolsec just to attempt to kill random people for little to no gain. Sounds like common sense to me.

You must not have played Monopoly with any cut-throat or creative players then. It is a highly conflict-driven game, and the free-form economic pvp aspect of it is why it is still popular to this day.

seems like honest question,..
I have been playing eve now for 3 yrs, 2,5 yrs pvp. Pvp comes in many formes... U have the low sec bs heavy ganks's/camps carrier hotdrops. High set's wardec's and station playing games. Than u have the big roaming fleets, small roaming, gurillia roams, carrier gank roams, frig gangs, nano roams, travel pipe camps, cta defensive/offensive/structure/cap gank/ hotdrop fleets ect in 0.0
The trick is to get in a good corp in a good 0.0 alliacne for most fun (personal). Any corp is different cause people and the corp structure makes the corp. Example, your 50, if u apply to a corp that has mosty amarican teenager im sure u does not fit. Find the right corp in the right alliacne that gets enoguh action and it keeps u entertained forever.

Well maybe.
Only 8 to 10 Years ago for playing computer games ? That is something I would expect to here from somebody in there low 20's not somebody who is 50. Most gamers started with;
Atari 2600 (1977) Apple II (1977) TRS-80 (1977) Commodore PET (1977) Commodore 64 (1982) Macintosh (1984) And several main frames, Anyone remember the Star Trek game that was on a some of them.
Perhaps it is your LACK of gaming experience coupled with age that makes PvP not interesting to you. For others in the 50 plus you have. The been there done that looking for a different type a challenge. PvP is is great this what I enjoy in the game.
Trying to decide why one person PvP and another trades on the market all day is like trying to figure out why someone likes red over blue. Or why one person becomes a fireman and the other a stock broker.
Everyone is different and likes different things. Personally I say don't worry about it and enjoy the game by playing it your way. It is the whole reason CCP made a sandbox to begin with.

Sound like a case of not understanding the complexities of Pew Pew. and your opinion that "pvp is ac completely unrealistic format and game mechanic within the EVE Universe" is a rather simplistic viewpoint. Be humble.
But if OP is talking about the moral side of exploding other people ships and/or even making the necessary preparations and time waste to get into or organise some pew pew. It does make sense. Also if you're not used to pvp in games and have the mindset for it, of course you will pew pew less in eve. Being brought up on FPS or strategy games does make a difference.
EvE can be a big strategy game with human "pawns" you just have to get yourself up in the ranks to get into the command seat(s). You'd be surprised by the amount of "amateurs and half assed armchair generals" that currently is in charge of military and strategic operations, both large and small scale.
No for the psychoanlyse part: you seem to longer to get into some pew pew. Although your are sublimating your desires by playing "industrial chars". Get in touch with your innermost primitive desires that longs for the blood of fellow space travelers and release the beast. Human opponents are much more interesting than anything a computer AI can throw at you. You will discover that pvp is very strategic on all levels.
