425mm is roughly 16.75 inches. Here, depict a real 16 inch naval shell:

In EVE, 425s are pretty much machine guns. We're spitting these monsters by the dozen like they are peas.

base rate of fire on the 425 is about 10 per minute. Not exactly a machine gun.

^ Is the largest gun ever actually fired at war, surpassed in caliber only by the French 'Monster Mortar' (975mm) and the American 'Little David' (910 mm), which were both never fired.
In EVE terms, the largest guns ever built by the human race are a bit bigger than Medium guns. meanwhile, my Jaguar is running around with three twinned sets of 280mm Nuclear Artillery bolted on.
you're damn right our guns are insane.

Dude, each shot is a two-second burst firing something like three dozen rounds. The rest is cooldown. -

nice. I prefer this simple image, tho.

It's not just our guns. It's the speed we reach, too. That dramiel on a 2km orbit at 3,500 m/s is soaking over 500 Gs.
This is hilarious. With a bit of luck, CCP will get around properly conveying such scales and massive performances.

A pitty that for the moment incarna/CQ has not been able to convey the shipsizes to us like they did at their first version like this - Hilmar getur ekki tala= vi= ¦ig n·na, hann er a= fara ß japanska Tfskuverslun.

The ships are big too; the largest combat ship on Earth (The USS Enterprise) is 342 meters long, smaller than a Dominix.

3500mm is 11ft based on Google calculator. or in other words you are shooting shells just shy of a Mack Truck in size as a truck is normally 13ft 4in clearance.
you also have to remember our ships are shielded and using high tech armors.... and the other fact that our smallest combat vessel(frigate) is roughly the size of a Boeing 747.
What is truly over the top is the power usage of some weapons. I doubt it takes more power than what a small town consumes in summer with all the homes cranking the AC to operate a cruise missile launcher.

Life support systems for the the firing crew (+redundancy, +enough to cater for all four shifts)? ùùù ôWe want to try this thing called micro-transactions, but we don't know what it is. Can anyone explainà aw screw it, let's just do it! What could go wrong?ö ù ÇÇP |

I assume reloading would be automated, with a maintenance crew that would fix any problems/manage changing ammo and whatnot.
Targeting though, I assume that there is a crew that manages that. R A I N B O W S |

maybe but I still doubt that needs multiple giggawatts of power.
of course this is where we have to allow ourselves to just say its a gameplay thing. if say a Citadel Cruise launcher didnt use 100,000Mw you would see them fitted to ravens for cheap siege boats.

And yet we cannot fire those weapons further than 250 km for the biggest long range guns. I wish CCP designed the game to simulate real ranges we could use those weapons with. Feels pretty ridiculous to fire a 1400mm artillery mounted on a spaceship at 50 km range. In space the projectile would travel infinite ranges limited only by the time it takes to reach the target and the maneuverability of the enemy ship to dodge it.
When you read some sci-fi novels the space ship combat feels way more immersive and credible than in eve- missiles being fired on hundreds of thousands of kilometers range, counter measures, ships maneuvring and firing energy weapon broadsides... when I think about how much better and more interesting the combat in this game might be if CCP forgot space barbies and console shooters... just makes me sad.
