Edited by: Commander TEK on 15/08/2011 05:11:44 Doing a college survey about why people play MMO's. Please stay on topic.
Why do you play eve? Short and sweet, just a sentence or two.
Ex. I play eve to get away from my wife and kids.
All replies are greatly appreciated. At least semi-serious answers please.

Ouch, it actually hurt to read that. eh.. see you back in Eve in a couple of weeks.
I play Eve because its the only game I know that has a direct connection between my real life and my in game life.
I train when I'm offline. I build while I'm offline. I research while I'm offline. I invent while I'm offline. My corp and alliances continues to be at war while I'm offline. I buy and sell stuff when I'm offline. My character essentially lives in the game even when I'm not their to take command over him.
Eve allows me as a player to influence the game through markets, combat and simply through my presence.
No other game I have ever played offers that. In every MMO I have ever played when you log off, you have stopped playing.

I play EVE because:
- I have not found any better alternatives (yet)
- I need some kind of entertainment for the times I'm not out drinking with friends (or working)
- I like to be a prick to other people and laugh at their unhappiness but don't like physical pain so being the Internet Tough Guy is the obvious choice.

I did have the choice of doing this or pounding my toes with a ball peen hammer, but the hammer was somehow mislaid so I'm forced to do this being denied that alternative.
Actually, I am what is called a "disabled" person. I was exposed to chemicals in the workplace at a time when there was no OSHA, chemicals now EPA only handles while wearing HAZMAT suits. At the time they were modern living's answer to industrial tasks...solvents, insulators and the like. They have now been pulled out of use because they do things to people like...what they did to me.
SO, I'm faced with my day in which I am physically restricted in a very frustrating way. I don't have many choices in how to occupy my time, since I can't stand on my feet for more than five minutes at a time. Rather than developing my thumb to gargantuan size cycling through 152 channels of crap on the Telly looking for something intelligent, I put on some classical music and fire-up EVE.
Now, I don't want no pity party. I'm trusting in the sincerity of your inquiry and thought people in my position should be heard now and then. That's all.
Thanks for asking. |

Why do I play?
Because, truly, I am an anti-social little bugger who just enjoys it. Am not a freak. Am not a nerd. I just found something that entertains me. People find it so hard to get a grip of.
I work full time, I have a normal life but instead of football and television, I like chatting to new people. That aint so bad is it?!
The guilt complex attached to Eve enjoyment is strong in this one.

Because I enjoy it (really simple isn't it?) and because for all its agonizing flaws it remains best in class as far as available options go.
Still working on a master plan to get the missus to play as well. I almost had her nabbed when the new character creator came out but the fact you can only walk around in a single room and a corridor was a definite problem which I've as of yet been unable to resolve.

I playED EvE because I liked the Sci-Fi universe that was persistent, and was a sandbox game in one of the truest senses of the word.
I cancelled EvE( 10 days till GTC runs out, just happened to stop by today to send a petition about cancelling) because CCP refuses to acknowledge or fix the RMT/Botting plague that has ruined 0.0 IMO.

Ditto, +1
Plus a few hours spent away from the harsh reality of real life relaxes me. If I was not playing Eve, I would be playing some other MMO of similar attraction. It's the sandbox that attracts me, much like Fallout(s) did for me on the PS3
Scanning down a wormhole, discovering ancient sites, finding "treasures", getting my azz handed to me by Sleepers, this all makes me play this game. Not PvP, Not Corps. Just plain sandbox enjoyment the way I want to play a game. I don't need a killboard to measure my epeen.
Cheers. |

No was someone who probably ganked you in hisec. Someone who had seen the full gambit of what the game has to offer and seen it was all shallow garbage.
You just keep grinding those missions, pull the poker machine lever a few more times, you might just get a big reward.

You sound dissapointed with everything Eve in general. Someone who ganked me in hisec? I love it when people make crappy assumptions just to make themselves feel better about what they feel and write, just so they can somehow offer an insult. You couldn't be further off the mark.
Yes, I will keep grinding level 4 missions in nothing more than a stock-standard T2 fit Catalyst. Yes, I will keep scanning down Wormholes in my stock-standard T2 fit Incursus and try and find all the lovely treasures it may have to offer, or have my azz handed to me by the inhabitants.
Get over it and get over yourself. Just because you're not having fun, you think no-one else is ?

I enjoy the concept of a persistent world filled with thousands of players who affect the course of events. Eve wins out over all the other MMOs for several reasons.
1. Eve is the only game I've found that actually lets the players affect the world in a meaningful way. 2. Eve does not require ludicrous amount of grinding to advance your character. True, isk does have to be earned but we have a vast amount of methods to earn that isk compared to other MMOs. 3. Eve's the only game that doesn't segment their population into separate servers. More variables in the sandbox makes for more interesting game play. 4. The absurd level of variety and complexity built into the game. There are aspects of Eve I haven't even experimented with. It's unlikely I'll ever hit a point where I've done it all. 5. Spaceships are way cooler than elves and gnomes.

I play Eve to see my SP's counting up day after day. Occasionally log in to change a skill. Sometimes even fly a ship. There's only space for one MMOG in my life, so I'm just really waiting it out until another MMOG comes along like DAoC. First thing, surveys are useless. You cannot gain any usuable, authentic information from a survey. Because the information in a survey comes from opinions, and cannot be verified as 'truth' in any manner, the very nature of a survey makes it unscientific at it's very basic level.
But you are a college student studying this sort of thing, so you already know that!
But I'll bite anyway -
Been a computer gamer since the mid '80s, and have found that the gaming experience provided by the single-player games cannot match the player driven, open ended play offered by MMO's. So why EVE? The community here has a vastly smaller ratio of emo-rage kids to adults, and that is attractive to me. Every MMO that I have played, I have eventually been driven away from due to the lack of maturity and intelligence within the community. It's a game breaker for me. EVE has its share of kids and morons, but it is far less than most of the other games out there.

To answer your question in the strictest sense, I play EVE because each of its multiple sandbox activities; boring, benign or frantic suit my erratic mood swings during the time slot I have available to play.
To answer the question I want to answer. I was attracted to EVE because I was faithful to my childhood fantasies of what Braben and Bells ELITE could have been. May EVE never forget it's origins.
