It confuses me, my game time costs $10.95 when I buy a years worth. This plex deal makes it $15.30 a month. So basically this deal would cost me $4 more a month? Great deal CCP!

people say dumb things like this about every MMO any time an MMO has a discount on game time

GTC/PLEX are always more expensive than plain game time, because of the ability to convert to in game item with you can legally sell for ISK - it's a convenience mark up

You guys are fooling yourself if you think this is an attempt to give players a break on game time.
What CCP is really doing is trying to artificially devalue PLEXs with an increases in supply and make some extra money with a sale. By giving out PLEXs in bulk the hope players will take advantage of this deal. Sell some on the market adding to supply and lowering PLEX value and also using some in the NEX making bank.
Though PLEX supply was always a lot higher than demand, so PLEX value is related more to the communities perception of what it should be valued than supply and demand.

Where is the CCP article you pulled this gem of information from?

Edited by: Zarutha on 03/09/2011 04:56:23 Eve is really the only mmo I have played that has kept my interest. I love it.
Why as of late has CCP been making so many disappointing decisions? They have such an amazing thing here, why ruin it?

After 20 years in advertising, I can say you hit the nail in the head. I said the exact same thing to a co-worker of mine who also plays EVE. He agreed.
Ildryn, such a shame you cannot see this. YOu dont need an article to see whats going on. Even basic economics of supply/demand will tell you the strategy here is to drop PLEX/ISK prices, probably to stimulate the NEX store since that is the only thing that has changed.
There are plenty of ways to give discounts to players. You don't devalue a currency without a good reason to.
CCP is testing the waters here, along with their new marketing pertners. I would not mind myself so much. Go and make all the money you want, but I get ****ed because the patches have been TERRIBLE lately. No real added valuse and they consistently unravel a dozen other things in the process. Just not a buttoned up as they use to be.
It's sad.

Go to Jita and look at how many Plex's are sold every day. Even accounting for a hug percentage of resales the number of Plex's bought every day is pretty staggering.
Someones going to take CCP up on the deal cause they were going to buy that many anyways. |

The reason people buy PLEX is so that they can sell it for ISK....or use the NeX store.

What you have to look at is the bigger picture.
a 60-day GTC is sold for $35.00 USD
30 day sub via ccp 15.00 USD + 2.00 International transaction fee
1 plex - 19.99 purchase from ccp 19.99
13 plexes for $199.99 dollars.
Anyway whats the point? First there are a lot of rich stupid people out there that dont deserve the money they have. Second, there are people who pay for the game via GTC this is great for them as it is much much cheaper than buying cards or codes.
Finally? WHO THE **** CARES? I'm not going to buy them, most people wont buy them. If people want to let them, stop whining about it. Seriously it's quite sad that people waste their lives posting this dribble and stuff that doesnt really matter.

Could it also be that CCP is going through some rough times, financially, and they need the money now rather then spread out over 13 months?

Seems likely, an interest free loan. I wonder how many people will actually go for it though, I'd have thought they'd need a few thousand people to go for it to make it worthwhile.

Next thing you know they'll be selling 12-month subs cheaper than 12 1-month subs!

note that september month-end is a fiscal quarter-end point, at least in the US, i have no idea about international business finacial calendars. I don't have an opinion on the ploy one way or another, but it seems that it's possible there really was a loss of subscriptions as people raged about(seems like I notice the 'logged in' numbers are consistently lower than they were pre-incarna every time i play, but i haven't been keeping track), maybe they need to boost the sales figures and cash prior to quarter-end to make the target numbers, and hope that something they do over the next 3 months will fix the trend.
This seems like the reasonable corporate financial plan to me when you're staring at a reporting problem 30 days away... note that the sale ends 9/16/11, enough to boost and see the results, maybe there will be another 1 week extension of the deal at the end of the month... hmmm.

And again they try to scam the europeans.
Sorry, but offering this 13 plex for $199, but taking Ç 199 from europeans.... sorry, thats a pretty obvious scam.
1 Plex is Ç 15,38 according to that "special offer".
1 Plex bought via... eg shattered crystal is (1 dollar = 0.7048 euro) Ç 12,25.
Sorry CCP, but do your math.

#1: they say it's because of V.A.T.
#2: The only time I bought a GTC, I did so from Deep Space Supply (Battleclinic's shop) and paid it via Paypal. It costed me 26.92 EUR (instead of 34.99 USD) so it was a fine deal.
Now I must consider wether I can get to buy the 199$ pack from the EU and how much will it cost me in euros, compared to my alt's subscription already being paid in euros, and of course what would I do with 13 plexes... very hypotetically!

Well.. you don't have a valid complaint there, just be thankful your currency is worth 41% more than mine is.
Similarly, I'm sure CCP charges it's Chinese customers on that other server less than they do me.. that's globalism Elaine, not CCP's problem or fault.

Quoting myself? Yep. Because I just found out that the "offer" actually is more expensive than the monthly subscription: 14.95 EUR versus 15.30 EUR of the 13-pack.

The funny thing about the bulk sale, is that people pretty much went nuts and started selling it for a lower price as in "omg its going to drop lets sale now 11!!!11!", and actually make the drop of the cost.
In less than a month the price will go up a bit again.
