Alright.. This weekend - Among other fun activities - Offered me a chance to engage a wartarget T1 frigate in my stabber. Although I did get the kill, I know that I was mostly lucky, because I was down to the last 20% hull when he died.
When I made the stabber, I tried to fit it for anti-frig combat, so it was fitted something like this:
High 4 x 180mm AC, depleted uranium 2 x Assault launcher, flameburst light missile
Mids Scram Web AB
Low 800mm plate Medium repper TE
1 x Warrior II
I figured that the web, TE and tracking bonused ammo would give me enough tracking to actually hit the frig, and I did, mostly, but for laughable damage.
Is there a right way to actually make medium guns (mostly ACs, but others as well) hit for decent damage on frigs? Or will I always need drones to reliably hit them?
I know this is a noob question

Use a Rupture instead.
Tons more tank, damage and drones. It is the end-all choice when it comes to non-faction cruisers. Similar fit but with bigger plate, bigger guns and twin small neuts .. no frigate will survive long.

yup. "Drop" boosters. Remember, the first one is always free (except, not really).
huh.. Honestly tho, there is many variables to know. I.E. Halo implants can shrink signature of frigs down to a spec of dust or perhaps he hanged out at the edge of your fallout, therefore anemic damage?
Im a little puzzled to hear Dual 180s having trouble tracking T1 frigs at all, inside web ranges and all.

It could might as well have been a rupture, but this particular time I was in a stabber. Either way, the question would have been the same.
Also, Sphit, I'm happy you wrote that way, because all things considered, I thought that those guns would be able to hit easily as well. I guess it comes down to circumstances and my noob piloting and low SP.
But as a general question for those of you with lots of cruiser experience, I guess it's not entirely impossible to track a frigate with medium guns - Provided it doesn't sig or speed tank?

You used medium guns. Even small guns have a hard time hitting AB-ing frigates close up, med guns (depending on piloting) will have even a harder time.
A no-neut setup like yours there would melt with too much trouble against my AB-Sader unless you use smart piloting. ____

Move away from him with your AB to reduce his transversal.

Medium and large guns will not hit a afterburning frigate that is orbiting at 500m, even if webbed.
The only weapons that cruisers and larger ships have against this tactic are:
1) Friends 2) Energy neutralisers 3) Small drones
Bring at least one.
A decent Rupture fitting is:

Yeah, Neutralizers are THE anti-frigate tool when it comes to turret based ships (pretty much any ship really), but you can't just neutralizer them and think you'll score some hits; you've gotta neutralize them to get their scrams off of you and turn their ABs off, and then you can use your MWD to gain some decent range on them where you will track fine. _________________________________ But then again, I am just a dirty 17 year old bogan. |

Thank you for your inputs, I'll keep them in mind for next time. For the record, I travelled in a straight line with my AB on for the whole time, so he couldn't just orbit me. Part of the reason I ended so low in structure was probably that I didn't actually counter-aggro on him until my shields were gone, at which point he only had to chew through the 800mm plate. Hooray for indecisiveness. I guess either my skills are a little on the low side, or he was just a very good, well skilled pilot :) Either way, it was a really good 2-3 minute fight against a worthy adversary for sure.

Can you post the kill mail? might shed some more light on why you had trouble. (TD's for example)
The trick with stabbers is to manually fly them to reduce the transversal of smaller ships, or to increase yours against bigger ships. Theyre tank is meh, theyre damage is meh, thyre everything is meh, EXCEPT (and heres the good bit) theyre mmm nom nom nom speed, menuverability and tiny sig.

Edited by: Larton Dretta on 06/09/2011 08:34:13 it's **** easy to kill frigates in a Stabber with an AB, just kite them to death (align to a celestial, don't hit "keep at range" or "orbit", preferably do it right before you get within web range), they'll have 0 transversal, if you still have problems hitting them you can always load Titanium Sabot M, it improves your tracking, but it's not necessary
EDIT: Depleted Uranium M works too, so i see you have that covered

One thing iv found is that if you have the falloff to hit from about 20-30 k, you should be able to hit frigs without issue, even using 425's. First thing i do when engaging a frig is burn directly away, and try to apply the bulk of your damage before they get in range. After that a flight of warrior II's should be able to finish off whatever frig you are fighting.

This is due to transersal velocity. While a frigate is flying towards you, it has very little transversal velocity. So no matter what speed the frig is going, a large gun can hit it with regularity, until the frig gets nearer his orbit range and starts to 'traverse' you. Then large turret tracking is much too poor to ever reliably hit a frig.

Good day:
An experienced pilot will zig zag towards you rather than burn towards you in order to keep their transveral high.
Thank you.
