I'm really horrible at expressing what I feel about this game, but I know that I want more content, more events, and more more.
One thing I especially want is the trade system to be completely revamped and made to tie into the storyline and events, and have them affect it right back. I'd also like to see the player market become more personalized. Right now its just a wholesale place, you don't even know who you're buying from. Nobody can make a name for themselves in production, its way too anonymous. How can you become famous, infamous, or even have an effect on EVE?
I remember talking with Darantil and Yvonne and Athule a year ago about how cool it'd be to have corp branded ships that we build that would have our logo on the side and have slightly different performance characteristics from the basic models. I mean we've got an Vagabond blueprint ... why shouldn't darantil be able to research 5 % extra speed out of it for a reduction in armour or cap or something and then brand the thing as the "Jericho Vagabond" to give us a bit of originality on the market?
Thats the kind of thing I'm talking about really. Content that makes us feel we belong to the universe and are leaving a mark here.

Edited by: slip66 on 05/03/2005 07:10:17 I never understood why they changed the missiles anyways. Doesnt make sense, you decrease the speeds of frigs and cruisers for various reasons but then increase crusie effectiveness. 6 months ago the fleets contained good portions of all three ship classes. Now its reverted back to precastor where all you see is BS fleets fighting at long range...

every set up can be beat it just takes time to think about how to beat it
i would personaly like to se a lot more content than the swinging of the nerf bat to make things equal in an unequal universe .

Exactly the point we are all trying to make...
CCP seems obsessed with the "perfect" balance at the cost of providing content and game mechanics
tbh i would happily of taken a 6 month delay on exitdust if they were keeping me occupied with /sarcasm on oh i dont know, maybe a race or an election and the ensuing wars, /sarcasm off
the caldarii race (isd event) and the gal ellections (ccp event) were both announced last year ... yet the caldarii race finals took 9 months to happen (delayed due to a patch, then another patch then annother) and it looks like the gal elections will actually kick off 9 months late too
they are never gonna balance the game perfectly, just get on with giving us fun things to do, and make this the game it should be,

Back on topic, I have only ever been involved in 1 event and that was just after my corp joined the NSA and AURORA in a bunch of angels ships attacked the NSA refinery in 3JN - lots of fun, despite the lag caused by an entire alliance descending on the poor guys.
However yes I agree, more events would be nice, they don't necessarily be the scale of a small war between the empires (though that would admittedly be cool as hell) , but things like regular raids by a small pirate fleet on a outlying system and pursuing a fleeing kidnapper through several systems trying to rescue the VIP or whathave you he has just abducted would make for a interesting change of pace to mining or sitting in a belt blowing up NPC rats. Or for that matter blowing up the same named mission rat for the 12th time - you would think he'd start to get the idea but nooooo.....

example: we got laser nerf coming up next. Once that is done, do some work on corp tax or something. Then do EW nerf, then add comet mining, gas clouds, or whatever. Then missile changes, etc
The sad thing is that even that corp tax fix isn't content really. Its just a rediculously overdue implementation of an essential function that should have been implemented at release. I think part of the problemo here is that theres a lot of confusion about what content actually is:
The core system of the game: combat, corp management, trading, admin tools n stuff, thats all the meat and dreak of the offering. Its neccessary to make everything work and keep the training ticking over and the user base treadmilling (albeit effortlessly) with the excellent eve skill learning process.
Whereas stuff that breaks you out of that relentless dynamic is the content. IE you log on thinking "I'll just npc some more BS's tonight". But someone in corp says ... "there is something happening in Gallente Space, a Quafe Ultra Launch party with lots of celebs and the prospect that a sinister terrorist group might launch an attack!"
Thats content. Because it means you actually get to use your skills and experience and equipment to do more than just make more isk and modules and ships and blah blah blah. You get to influence whats going on in the game world and perhaps get famous "like it says on the box" (assuming aurora sent a reporter and covered the event).
In my opinion Eve needs more things happening that make the players take choices about their loyalties and politics and outlook etc.
What if the Gallente and Caldari had a border dispute over a couple of constellations? What if the governmnets offered contracts to corporations and individuals willing to sign up and fight for the issue?
If you signed up your corp would get a nice little tag saying "Federation/State Privateer" and you'd get a letter of Marque to engage the other side's fleet assets (npcs) and player privateers.
Your letter of Marque would be valid for those Constellations only, the "war" would run for a month or so. Both governments would have a league table for the fiscal damage caused by the Privateer corps. Concord would pull out of the area making it a temparary 0.0 zone (for the purposes of concord intervention if not gate guns)
At the end the scores are totalled up and either the agressor would have two more constellations and or the defender would have prevailed and proved the right.
War heros (players) would get decorated and given nice medals and ships by the winning government. News stories throughout.
Player involvement!
Thats what its about, and thats whats missing. I hate the fact that this superb background and conceptual base for the eve universe is so static and trapped in amber. Its been almost two years and the player corps have thousands of battleships and billions of isk to spend. Give us a chance to demonstrate our political independence and combat experience already and change the map of empire space a bit.
Think of the options.
Intaki Independence Blood Raider Expansion in Amarr space Gurristas vs Mordu's legion in Pureblind Angel Cartel powerplays Amarr vs Minmatar seccessionists
This game background is so rich, its up there with the best scifi backgrounds in games I've ever seen. It deserves to be living and actually played with.

In the recent devblog about getting players input about the map the devs said they were mostly interested in ideas about 0.0 because the changes in empire would be more storydriven. That sounds to me like we're about do see some disputes between the empires and hopefully we can play a little part in it

Sadly, I think its pretty clear they are trying to fix network issues by spliting up the player base and distribute them more around the eve universe, instead of having 500 agent runners in rens bringing down the node
So I'll take that 'storyline' thingy with the map with a grain of salt.

I worry about that also. It would be really bad if all weapons were eventually the same. I'm reminded (ironically) of that collectable card game Magic the Gathering that was popular a few years back. No way on earth were those cards all balanced but you built a deck out a collection of cards by certain rules and everything seemed pretty fair on the whole. There were good cards and bad cards, and part of the fun was finding out appalling combinations of the things to completely thrash your opponent etc. Point being, in MTG there were 5 colours of magic and each had a different theme:
White was protection and healing and human troops Red was blasting and blowing up things and orc style troops Green was enchantments and weather effects and elvish style troops Blue was countermagic and manipulation and flying style troops Black was curses and life stealing and undead style troops.
Now that game had thousands upon thousands of cards and no way in hell were the five colours "accurate and completely" balanced against each other. But you could mix and match to an extent and part of the virtue of combat with them was building a surprise deck to gain the advantage over opponents.
I've always felt Eve online is a bit like this in the combat system.
Sure the Gankaggedon is the uber damage dealer at the moment. But you kinda kill it by putting in some racial amarr jammers.
Sure the Raven is the uber kill everything ship at the moment, but you can ace it with an apoc tank, a domi vampire, etc etc.
The skill in pvp is doing the unexpected and combining different ships and modules and building fleets (like building decks I guess).
Hence ... why is it neccessary to exactly balance everything? The nerf cycle just leads to flavour of the month ships than everyone learns to be competitive.
But why bother? I've stuck with pure Gallente because I love drones and hybrids and its what my culture uses from the backstory - and consequentially I am pretty good with gallene ships - I love the sound mega ions make and I love the idea of superaccelerated railgun shells crashing against the hulls of targets from 425s. If it turns out another ubership is better than me 1v1 then hell, I'll bring a friend etc. I keep my imagination and character concept!
Look at the magic example please:
It had 5 colours of distinctive character. Eve has 4 races of distinctive character (growing less distinctive with each cycle of balancing) - if the continuing moaning from the player base for balance does drive eve devs into doing balance balance and more balance then eventually it won't make any difference what weapons you use tbh.
Like Bubbles says, lets forget the balancing and get some content!
Lasers should do the least damage but have most accurate shots and have no ammo. Hybrids should do the most damage and pretty accurate shots since they take cap and ammo. Projectiles should do most damage and less accurate shots since they take no cap and ammo. Missiles should do less damage than direct fire because they are guarenteed hits using no cap but ammo.
I'd like to see these differences actually increased. But then again i'd like to see the factions stop selling battleship BPO's to enemy races too :)
But like Magic colours / eve race differences should be pronounced and interesting - just I personally love the guys in the Amarr and Minmatar nationalist alliances that only use their racial ships ... the devs should hardcode in a bonus purchase discount to those guys because they are representing their national theme. Anyways

With the exodus patch eve got an injection of a lot of fantastic new scenery that could easily me used to spice up the game. There should be stuff happening in eve all the time all over the place, eve needs to feel alive.
Could use localized billboards to inform players of things going on in that area.
Maybe some scripted NPC background events could be used to paint a backdrop. Use the complex models as npc structures around stations/moon/gates with npcs gong about doing their things (haulers docking, npc groups warping in and out etc). Put some news item into the agents "whats going on around here" queue and stick some stuff up on local billboards then script some event.
Tieing these in with the agent system and player news feeds would really expand the feel of being in a living universe with billions of people in it. Theres just not enough events or news at the moment to make eve feel like anything other than a sandbox.

On the PVP front I am a semi fleet commander, I like playing around with fleet design and tactics, trying to create good setups and testing them out by killing some pirates :). What I am tired of and hate seeing are these continuous balance patches. Everytime I look at the dev blob and see a new post I just groan. All the time that I take trying to create a new setup for a ship and trying to organize a fleet that can do multiple tasks is ruined by these supposed balance patches, I have to relearn tactics go back to the drawing bored and find out all over again what works and what will get me dead.
Right now the game is interesting you have different setups that work and setups that can combat other setups, like Jasmine said with MTG. The only difference is that in MTG you didn't have to rebuild your deck every other day.
Yes its interesting to get more cards and change your tactics with more cards, but one of your major cards doesn't get totally nerfed for no reason. So with this proposed ammo patch and switching all the gates in 0.0 I have to start from scratch...again....
This is starting to get very frustrating I don't like thinking that battleships I have have invested in are going to be scrap cause of a random patch that totally nerfs them to uselessness and I have to wait 5 months for them to be useful again when CCP gets around to fixing what they broke. The only kicker is that it wasn't broken in the first place IT WAS FINE. Mega Pulse are FINE, Gankageddons are easy to combat but people whine about them anyway. They whine about whatever is useful, and CCP nerfs it. Its not my fault that you didn't come up with a proper setup to fight the gankageddon, bring a scorp or something.
but I'm rambling and probably saying what was already said before, its just that this is getting so frustrating trying to specialize in certain things and then having them be uselesss the next month.
Now I know how all the other minmatar that specialized in projectiles feel. Sucks when your favorites ships become useless. __________________________________________________

You just have to look at E&B and you see what happens if you try to balance for an eternity. They listened too much to the small lobbygroups of whiners arguing for this or that stat being worse or better than something else. In the end when E&B was forced to fold their devs went public with teh story behind the scenes. Aparently they had been listening too much to the lobbygroups and tried to get perfect balance so that the game in the end was indestinguishable from the vision and design document for the project.
I fear that Eve with its current frenzy for balance over content is digging the same hole for itself. We who played alpha and beta remember the early promise this game held. How many of us can say we are playing the game we thought it would be from what the devs told us in Alpha? Not many id vager.

Edited by: Vernn on 06/03/2005 14:50:30 I think Oveur is a smart and capable guy, and I fully understand that content dev's and programmers fixing bugs are two seperate entities, the fact remains though that I have been playing for 3 months now and have seen nothing new.
The same bugs that were here when I started are still here along with some new ones. Im pretty much borderline lately about continuing to play after losing 60 million in ships to ganking in the last 2 weeks.
I don't know what goes on at CCP HQ, but as a player I all I can express is my daily view/reaction to the game, and frankly it is rather monotonous and uncreative as of late.
I read the Dev blogs and I see the graphs and the news about new ships and everything. The reality is though that the weapon re-balancing doesn't affect me even remotely. Probably won't for another 9 months. The fact that pointless ganking is so prevelant kind of negates the importance of X weapon has X stats.
Frankly I wanna log on and go "WOW! Thats cool!"
Lately all I get to do pretty much is fly around for hours assembling parts for a ship only to try to go fight only to be ganked. Then I get to go mine ice for 10 hours to make enough money to actually get going again.
All the rationalization and discussion means nothing. The ONLY thing that means anything is the perception your players have of the game when they log on to play it. Just my opinion as a young player.
P.S. If you want an Exodus to low sec space, drop the material requirements/cost to build everything in the game by 50%. No one is gunna wanna risk a ship with how long it takes to earn one currently. The risk vs.reward is screwed. Your nuts if you think im ever gunna go to low sec with 200mil in ship and equipment only to get ganked by teenage players who only kill me for the fun of saying "HAHA pwned!"
P.P.S How about making the ISK payouts for the 4 levels of missions more linear. Level 1-3 earn squat in ISK, level 4 and youll get rich in 2 days from what I hear. How about letting me make 3 or 4 million on a level 3 mission from bounties?

Edited by: Chade Malloy on 06/03/2005 14:58:12 Many good & quality post in this threat.
CCP should take this seriously, over the last months they havent done any new content ads. Field assembly arrays and research factories are still missing to make a POS really useful (there is not much point in having a pos set up as a corp base in deep 0.0 when you can¦t produce ammo, ships, equipment etc to be more independable from empire supply), god only knows why these didn¦t have been added yet (and don¦t give me this balancing crap; the running costs of a pos are very high so why not give us one or two research slots per onlined research lab and same for the field assembly array?)
Pos have also been introduced to fight for territory, but atm every pos is pretty much invulnerable, you can defend it with one gun platform inside the shield for days under attack. As i remember, they where intended to be able to deal a corp a critical blow if destroyed or conquered, and in so providing something that its worth fighting for, but they are WAY too powerful (defenses and such) Since exodus release they did NOTHING to change them, instead they gave them MORE shield hp!)
I would dearly vote to accelerate dreadnought deployment, and then spread the (not too expensive, or they will again make ppl uber rich) blueprints via the market. don¦t make the mistake and give them as tech2 ships from agents. Make it so that you need a) a fully operational pos where you b) have to place a special construction plattform where you c) can finally build a dreadnought. Give them lots of armor but no possible insurance, and you have your money sink and the things worth fighting for. (Make the base mineral cost for one piece at about 1.5 billion).
Then, make a revamp of the lv4 agent mission, they should no longer be doable solo, maybe only in a future t2 battleship. (risk vs reward is totally off balance for them) Maybe switch all lv4 agent misisons to missions in deadspace where you can¦t warp out until you have destroyed the last enemy ship? that would add a lot of difficulty, with all the warp in-out tactics...
Patience wins. |

I totally disagree on this though. I think making eve no consequence PVP would kill it totally tbh. Fiddling with the costs to build and employ ships is absolutely no way to fill the gulf in content. The real reason 0.0 is nothing but a pointless gank zone is that older players are totally bored and have nothing to do, nothing to fight for, nothing to be engaged with. The mindless ganking is a symtom of the general ailment that you and I both see pretty clearly. So going for a quick fix by fiddling the costs of spaceship fighting is just to fall into the same trap the devs have fallen into.
Content not "balancing" !!!

Yeah I agree with that. Since people do lev3's and lev4's with lone battleships there shouldn't be such a huge jump. But realistically there needs to be more differentiation by corp mission anyhow. I think its bad that everyone who does lev4's needs to be combat setup. There should be non-combat lev4's for people that like trading and hauling and really really hard lev4's for people who want to do uber combat with ganks and all shades between. Originally I thought that was the point of the divisions and corp choice in agents.

I've read the vast majority of this thread so far and I must say that I am in agreeance with Jade, the lack of events which the backgroud stories could provide is vast, yet this has been neglected. Hopefully some day it will be possible for players to have an affect on the empires and hopefully sooner rather than later.

Jasmine is not Jade zach
Anyways,
Regardless of anything...IĘm absolutely sure that Kjartan, Reynir, Hilmar, and Fridrik want to see Eve succeed more than anything. This is their brainchild and there is a crazy amount of an investment in this. In many ways it must go good for them.
But adding to the overall content and interactivity, I think it might be either "under manning" of the teams responsible for making EVE seem alive and active. Because I have yet seen many updates on the events boards by Aurora and I have once seen an event that was last year, so maybe there are so few of them that it isnĘt enough to cover the player base.
There has been rumors that the employees or volunteers have been excessivly rude, many of the rumors only seem to point to two or three people in CCP. If i knew who they were i would bring it to them directly. So at first I thought the people i heard complaining were just doing the whole "I rebel, against authority". Granted I have spoken up a few times but it was usually over the rules and not about the individual people.
I later found another person who felt wronged by the system/people posted in the suggestions forums which was promptly locked because it involved moderation. So i got a quick glimpse that. "Ok, maybe im not alone on this."
But what solidified my belief is this, and it started to bring a picture together.

If I EVER said anything like that to ANY customer, I would have been fired on the spot without question! And now I 100% believe the people who say things are that bad. And this is a pattern that is repeated over and over lately with his posts to people.
I later found out that JP and his entire corp. left the game because they wanted no part in this type of behavior. And I also found out that this was a reoccurring problem with him.
Look,
Now, IĘm not apart of the devs club. So I admit I donĘt know what pressures they are under or how annoyed they are with players. But I would absolutely hate the fact that this mentality towards us is felt by everyone at CCP.
I mean do you guys really think that we are all rude, whiny, brats? Over the past several months, it is what im observing happening to people. And now its been publicly voicedąI have to say im at a loss. I apologize to you, CCP, for any annoyances you have with us, but for the sake of the newbies! Take it out on your junior staff that wonĘt bite back at their bosses. But on a personal note, if it was me of course, I would have been fired for lack of professionalism that lead to the insulting of a customer and the loss of several because of it.

too much faceless professionalism makes me wanna puke
We need more person-to-person communication, not company-to-custumer type of bull****.
I wouldn't mind hearing a personal opinion of some dev on this thread, for example.
