All online multiplayer games I have ever played have AFK indicator, so why not EVE?
*I don't want to start another threat about cloaky AFKers in null. No, this is not about being cloaky and AFK. This is about being AFK in general*
Tactical advantage of being AFK without others knowing it is quite powerfull tool. You can greatly affect gameplay of others and you don't have to play at all. So is it valid tactics? Is it ok, that EVE life and real life are so connected? Not everyone can have his computer online whole day. Not everyone will do it even if they could for many reason starting with energy consumption and ending with greener planet
So what do you think? Do we need AFK indicator? Imagine you could tell if someone is AFK or not. How much would this feature change your EVE experience? |

No, its a crap idea which has been suggested by dozens, if not hundreds of people like you - people who are scared of a player who is not even playing the game.

Yes let's turn eve into wow because that's what we have been avoiding right also do not EVER EVER EVER compare eve to any other games. What game lets you scam? Grief? Kill others without them agreeing to it? etc.
Eve is not like any other game you've ever played alright? Hay |

It is valid tactic to fool spies to stay online 23/7 and stay on channel in Team speak also, then no one can really tell if you are active or not.
Even if you are carebear who flies expensively fitted ship can stay 24/7 online and prevent easy suicide ganking. Usually pro gankkers keep those in a watch list.
So it is not only hunters and griefers who benefits about it, everyone can find it handy on certain situations. |

yes its' a good idea you go "afk" after 20 minutes of not touching anything, but also you can set "afk" yourself, and the only way to get rid of it is to turn it off or relog. so when you log in if you want you can set yourself afk and play as normally just because you can. |

Guys, use your imaginatin. Ofc. manualy setting up AFK and being able to move or do anything else is stupid. My idea was something like this:
You can get AFK status when - - You are AFK for 30 min - instant AFK flag cast - You type AFK manualy - it will take 30s to set flag
Whle AFK, you will have new mark on your portrait in local or somehow changed name ... whatever, but it has to be visible to other players.
You will loose AFK status when - - You try make any ingame action
When you make move while AFK flag is on, you loose AFK mark (players see you no longer AFK) and you are on 30s cooldown (something like undock from station timer) during which you can't move or do anything else. Unless you are no longer AFK cause someone bumped you or something.
This way players can see you are AFK and can take proper action/reaction.

Everyone knows exactly what you mean, and have all said no, they don't think that's a good idea. Local and show info already give out more information than they should, an afk indicator on top of that would be too much.

The answer is: NO
If you introduce an AFK indicator people will just misuse it and wait at a good strategic place so long until they are shown AFK... and then I see millions of tears running from noobs saying: He was AFK so why was he able to kill me so fast? |

So last night I was in a nul system, watching a group clean up old pos structures. I sat very still, waiting patiently till the lone hookbill became bored and left. During that time I was at my computer, talking to my bombing partner over xbox live, but putting in no input.
Waited a good 45 minutes to an hour. Hookbill left, we dropped cloak, bombed and torped 2 cruisers and ran when the hookbill returned to system.
How would an afk indicator change any part of that? At best, it would have shown me going afk, prompting my targets to relax more. At worst, had no impact because even though I enter no input, doesn't mean I'm not already lined up, ready to go the moment I need to. This is not a well thought out idea as it would add nothing of value, while wasting coding resources for am unneeded function. |

Well, if you go AFK, players would see it. And when you get back, players would see it too and it gives them chance to act accordingly. So you have no effect on game while you are not playing. And thats the major point I am talking about. Players should not affect PvP game life when not playing.
When you log off in space and than log back, your ship is in warp and you have to wait till it lands. I want same mechanics for being AFK. |

Again, think about the example I am giving. I was literally 17 km from an enemy moros and 35 from some enemy cruisers for an hour before I decided to strike. I was cloaked. I was not touching my keyboard in any way, shape, or form. For comms with my fleet (anorher bomber doing the same as me), we were using xbox live so no need to touch the computer there either. So basically, for one hour (could have been longer if the hookbill had not left), to my computer, i was afk. I was not really, but the computer can't see that, it can only tell thst for an hour there was no input.
How would your afk system work with this example?
Would, like other mmos, I have to enter /afk to enter this mode? If so, why would anyone volunteer to do this? Would the eve client determine after x minutes of no input, I should be declared afk? Why are you forcing me to make input that could potentially endanger myself just so you can feel safer? Seems like a one-sided affair then. Plus if I am patiently waiting, why must I make some input?
And mind you, the enemy saw when I returned to my keyboard because the first input I did was drop cloak, align, bomb, lock target. So they saw me show up on their overview the moment I returned.
Honestly, you seem to just want a method of risk reduction without any comprises to the hunting cloaked pilot. How do you balance your suggestion, or is it simply that you want an easier eve while making it harder for others to kill your ship? See, this is the heart of the issue people have with your idea. It hinders the ability to hunt targets without offering anything back. And if you just want a safer eve, go play a different game as that is not what eve is about. |

So, if I set my ship to orbit something, it is technically performing an in-game action. I can then walk away and never have the 30min AFK timer hit me?
Or, would it still hit, and I'd be AFK orbiting.
Same applies with mining! If I am punching an ice-rock for more than 30min, how does the game know I'm afk-not-performing-action vs actually doing so, and does that avoid the flag?

well, yea the in-game ship is performing an in-game action with no player interaction at all, but im sure thats what a afk indicator would see as beeing "active"
it`s pretty much like ganking, it doesnt damage the victims too much, it has just become a almost idiot-proof thing to block a system with a cloaky (technicly) or gank a freighter, as there are no ingame mechanics to counter both effectifly. Boost T2 BPO`s! |

No guys. In-game player action can be detected simply as any player made request sent to EVE servers. Loading market, hitting orbitting button, changing direction ... simply everything you need server to respond to.
So orbiting is not players in-game action, but hitting orbiting button is. |

But remember, the op wants you to have a 30 second period where you cannot do anything once you return to your keyboard. So basically, you have to either type in a random chat every 30 minutes. Why do I see an increase in sales of the toy bird homer Simpson used in the episode where he gained weight to work at home. |

Again, why must I poll the server every 30 minutes to avoid your afk state when stalking someone? Seems like a stealth nerf attempt for afk cloakers that actually hinders people who may be cloaked but not afk. |

I dont know why your so much into orbting, it hasj ust nothing to do with this... u can just be afk cloaked orbtiting nothing, same deal.
Allthough, I have to say i dont like this proposal either, a cycle timer for covert ops cloaks (say 60 minutes) but with no deactivation delay would be a better solution, couse it would just hit the afkers, not certain ship classes as such.

Ah, but according to the op, this isn't about afk cloakers. I could be camping a war target in a station or gate camping a rarely used enterence to nul sec. If I do not poll the server every 30 minutes, I would risk being flagged afk. Given that many corps use a 3rd party voice system, even talking would not cause a server poll. You would have to chat in a window, open market, or something less than every 30 minutes or risk entering the afk state, a state which has a cooldown of 30 seconds before you can act.
Seems like forcing people to play your way. |

A bomber can easily wait an hour watching a jump bridge, unmoving, while waiting for a good target. 2-3 hours minimum wait period is needed.
Doesn't have to be about cloaks. Mining an ice belt in a Mackinaw? Some of the FW folk might not approve of this either, but for their own silly reasons.
At its core, though, something like this forces something onto the playerbase that is not needed. What problem is having an AFK indicator solving, truly? It seems like there are no /real/ problems in-game that would be fixed by an AFK flag. You state going AFK without others knowing as being a powerful tool? Well, how much more powerful is it to know, without a doubt, that your enemy that's been stalking your trade lanes or belts is not there? Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of that form of psychological warfare?
30 seconds to do anything is also a bit harsh. But I won't get into how many petitions will spring up from "I was belt-mining and the AFK hit and then I went BOOM because it took 30seconds to warp the F*$# out!"

My guess, the op and supporters will argue that the act of mining will poll the server in a manner that does not indicate afk. After all, an ice roid does technically have a finite amount of ice and mining does change that amount forcing a communication with the server.
Still, I think the point about usefulness of this function is dead on. The function.serves limited vamue and actually hinders pvp and the psychological side of combat. People should have ti worry if that neutral in local is present or not. Choosing to go out in such a situation is a risk, which they should have to take. The risk shouldn't be eliminated to make people's pve actions easier. |

In other games, I've avoided the afk flag altogether by jamming a coin between keys on the keyboard. An afk flag would solve nothing.

Off topic and Real World true story
Many years ago I worked for a very strange, large, beauroractic (and now dead) company in Antwerp, Belgium, in the days of 16 bit computing.
One of my tasks was to compile all the code once every few weeks and then do a massive data run. This was fine but when the screen saver came on the run, which would take hours, would stop. The company decided that it was a sackable offence to remove the screensaver so I had to do something similar to keep the computer running.
I actually had the mouse wrapped around an orbital fan which dragged the mouse in a circle so I could leave the thing running for a few hours whilst doing something else.
Then one day security came and turned off the fan because 'no-one was there'...
Mind you, I am not surprised that the firm went bust; they used to have fire drills for one floor at a time because they knew that they couldn't get everyone out of the doors at the same time...
Ah, great times. |

Not WoW.
But Jesus would I have fun terrorizing the **** out of systems with an AFK Tag- This would be a silent buff to solo/small gang PvP as it would let us know exactly who is docked up and who is actually active.

lolz. There's already server down. Think of it as a 23 hour afk flag.
Seriously? A 30 second cooldown before you can act? Someone is afraid of something in local channel.
Personally I think it would be cool if nullsec entities had to have some sort of infrastructure set up to even get local channel in null.
I remember one of my very first thoughts logging into EVE. "WTF is this local channel crap?" "when a ship is blown up, the pilot usually winds up replacing it. This drives the economy, steadies inflation, and gives industrialists a reason to manufacture. In contrast, creating isk while never losing any items has the unfortunate reverse effect on the market, plus it isn't really any fun." Jala |

Guys, think about idea, not about numbers. But some people will always play dumb and decide to throw away whole idea cause one number is not ok. Clap clap. Forget numbers, play with ideas. Look for solutions. If you want to decline idea, state reason based on more than just a imaginative number. And at last, this thread is not about cloaky afkers. Its about AFK flag in general. Not only for tactical purpose, but also for social purpose. Forget numbers, play with ideas, look for solutions. |

You seem too attached to this so called good idea. You talk about looking for solutions, to what? If people are afk, why does it matter to you? Why are you suggesting the additional load on the server because every so often the server has to check if people are present? What social value is there? If my friend is afk, he won't respond to my chat. No need to add extra code.
Also, as pointed out, there are simple ways to make it seem like someone is present.
So really, instead of asking us to talk about ideas, give us a valid reason to have an afk flag, a valid reason tgat justifies the code time required and any extra overhead in server checks this would impose.
Also, if this is mot about afk cloakers, then would your solution still be fine if having any active module negated the afk flag? |

Sure, you may argue it is a useful bit of knowledge, however what gives you the right to that knowledge? Perhaps I went off to the bathroom and don't want an afk flag indicating it was a long break? What if I do not want the war target camping me in station to know I stopped playing to watch tv. Perhaps I find it useful for them to waste their time camping me in. If they know when I'm present, I can't as easily bore them into dropping the war dec. So really, by what right do you claim this knowledge should be available to all?
Excuce me? I just put out an idea that AFK flag could be visible. I have never said it has to be. Thats the difference betwean discussion and statement. Now I am ready to see and think about others opinons as long as they really think and add something valuable into discussion. Not just attacking people for their ideas as you do. Hawk.
So far, manualy set AFK flag for corp chat channel is a good idea. Noone had an argument with it. Forget numbers, play with ideas, look for solutions. |

there is absolutely no way EVE can tell if someone is actually AFK or not without a webcam on every monitor and someone watching each cam. the idea is not only silly but inherently unenforcable.
in fact, it would serve to benefit to 'afk' people who are in fact not afk since their targets would assume they are not at the screen. |

I would totally scout out an active belt in a cloaky, sit and wait for the afk flag, let them come out of their hidey-holes like scared cockroaches and ambush them....
Actually, just cycling afk / non-afk every five minutes would be enough to totally mess with their operations, moreso than the current system. They'd be undocking and redocking so often they'd get nothing done. |

What you are advocating is getting rid of emergent gameplay. The emergent gameplay is using an AFK cloaked character (either alt of main) in order to wage psychological warfare on the people in that system. It is a very effective tool at that. I had a friend that used to log in, go to an enemy home system and cloak up his ship (I think it was a tempest) then go off to work. When he returned he would manually scan down the belts using Dscan and inevitably catch someone ratting in a belt and blow them away. Liar liar pants on fire, this is absolutely about cloakers in null and everyone knows it.
You want to know if you're 100% safe to rat/mine in null.
We don't need an afk indicator because it doesn't provide any kind of benefit at all (except for filthy nullbear scum who have no business being in 0.0 to begin with) and does nothing but boost the already overpowered and broken local intel tool |

As far as giving free intel to outsiders, no thanks. Psychological warfare is part of eve, as laughable as that is to say. Secondly I take a mild amount of pleasure from going afk for dinner and returning to a stream of "undock you puss" "lol u scared" and other such trolls, mainly from the knowledge that person wasted 30 mins of their life talking to a dead system. |

how to make it really work, i play other games when eve is running on behind, i am not really afk even i am not looking for EVE screen, but still i might be in comms listening what happens in EVE. Also i might have alt on other computer watching some gate etc. i am not doing anything else with that computer than just watching some times its screen.
So afk indicator never can tell the truth. It will be just thing that i would abuse to make you think i am afk. |
