I fly a Nightmare as my money making ship but it took me almost a 15 months to perfect it and that means
Elite core skills Perfect turret skills 5/5 Battleship skills perfect light/mid drone skills
Apart from some time wasted training for a hulk i dont fly any T2 ships which is about to change but
1. Do you specialise in a few ships or 2. Do you cross train a lot of ships but not take any of the skills to V
One nullsec alliance said there only reqs were minny Battleship to 1 and large projectiles to 1 for drake busting fleets.
Next set of questions
1. Do perfect skills matter when you are in a big group or 2. Does perfection only matter when you are solo or in very small groups.
training for perfection can be painful as you are limited in versatility on which ships you can fly and it takes a LONG time and if those ships are not what you thought they would be you have wasted a lot of time.
But you can fly everything but not very will then you are only good for large fleet work.
Your very valuable answers please

Perfect skills almost always matters. If you had two groups with the same ships and fittings and numbers, but one group had semi decent skill and the other had maxed skills, then the group with maxed skills will always win.
The only time perfect skills begin to matter less is when you have two fleets with different ship types and fittings as well as numbers and tactics being used.
Hope this answers some of your questions. |

Both, really - specialise first, then broaden. I.e. get the support skills and one race maxed out with all the ship classes you want to fly - once that is done, start the next race. (e.g. if you started with Amarr and maxed that out, cap, drone, navigation armor and shield tanking as well as gunnery support and medium launchers will be perfect - training any other race from there is pretty quick... - applicable to any race one started with, really).

I guess it's less important in a blob - especially in ****** alliances that solely rely on numbers. Personally, I'd refuse to fly any ship I can't fly maxed out, but then again, I consider blobwarfare to be extremely boring, so it's probably me. morons-áare recruiting. We're good at breeding! |

My story is
I started to play back in the days and i want to fly rifter hull nothing more, That changed and i went further up rupture, stabber, cyclone, hurricane and finished with my love fleet tempest. Then i went to guristas null sec. and found out non of the minmatar ship cant hold the candle to drake, tengu /attention sanctum whoring/ so i X trained have to admit drake was sad until i get heavy missile spec and use furies. My pimped drake made about the same isk as my HAM tengu doing same stuff .. Guristas sanctums.
Then i went back to empire with some retirement money and trained for machariel aka gallante ships up to gallante battleship IV.
Then i went back to roots i allways liked sleipnir so i trained that too. And in null sec in meantime i trained everything for zealot for possible Armor hacs roams/gangs/fleets never get chance to use it actually but thats probably problem on my part rather then on anyone elses.
Thats about that..

Started my main and changed direction in the beginning. Wound up being a jack of all trades. Now I focus on one thing at a time. Alt is pure industry, 5 in everything he does. Main goes for t2/l4 in combat ships but has quite a few 5's also. I think 50mil sp is about where i can get 'perfect' on most of my ships (sub cap).
In a group you should alert your FC if you have sub-perfect skills in the ship you are flying IMHO. Sometimes they will want you sometimes they won't and sometimes they will want you to change roles.

Currently I have 4 active accounts with six characters in use. These characters are as specialized as I can get them. Some of the older ones have some non useful SP due to the way the starting skills were set up then, but any less than a year or so old have essentially zero SP not dedicated to the role I have chosen for them.
Ashley SchmidtVonGoldberg wrote: 1. Do perfect skills matter when you are in a big group or 2. Does perfection only matter when you are solo or in very small groups.
Perfect skills are always an asset. It might not seem like much for the training time involve to go from level four to level five, but that little extra range on your weapon, that little bit less cycle time on your repper, that little bit extra maneuverability or top end speed can make all difference in a battle. Large or small.

By the social (fleets) nature of EVE you cannot just specialise in one ship and be done with it. You need to specialize on the FOTM.
As for the Nightmare i trained and use it just as you do, but i use maxed out sentries instead of lights/mids. Since i snipe, there's no point in wasting time with drones flying around. Three Curator II's pack quite a punch on frigates, cruisers and BC's, and add their DPS to larger targets, even with a ship with no bonuses for them. Sometimes the only difference between a budding genius and a blooming idiot is where they chose to take a stand. |

I used to be a generalist. Lately I've been focusing on improving the skills I have rather than training for new things. We'll see how long it lasts, the Loki is calling to me.....
That's my main at least. My alt is specialized for fleet command ships, and can barely fly anything else. I'm starting to branch out with him now since I can fly 3 out of 4 of the fleet commands, and have little desire at the moment to train for the astarte. I'm slowly crosstraining to some utility ships, in lieu of bringing the other specialization skills to level 5. I do want them, but don't want to spend the time right now.

I can fly any ship but sometimes I like to mix it up... it's the only way to go. All it takes is a little rebalancing and there are all kinds of odd fits you can try to gain an asymmetric advantage in a fight (or some other non-pvp-fight tactic... ninja ftw).
It's just fun to try something new.

I can fly every single one of my faction's ships, except titans. I can fit every single one of my faction's ships properly, including titans (except a skillbook or two.) I'm only missing a handful of T2 modules. When in a small alliance with limited resources, being able to fill any role gives a tactical advantage. I.E., the alliance who's one and only logi pilot can't log on today will have a much harder time competing against the alliance who has several logi pilots who can step up if needed, even if they aren't maxed (I'm maxed with logi because it's a prereq for being able to fit every carrier module.) And, when you get down to it, most of my PVP is on an alliance/corp vs alliance/corp or blue vs blue level, not on a 1v1 or equal vs equal level. |

After 4 years, apart from capitals there is very little I can't fly and I've made it my aim to try as much as I can. all that's left is getting 5's in specialisations and 5's in some ship types but apart from some industrials I can fly everything sub capital.
The only ships I ever specifically got maximum skills in were all four logistics ships and the skills needed to fly them and get the most from them. Next up is probably hacs 5 and interceptors 5. |

when I started eve I decided there was no way to train everything with one character so as to do "it all". so I specialized and created multipile accounts. Some are combat some are industry.. some are Amarr only .. some are Minmatar or Galentte only. The longer I play however the more these lines blur.. I have started cross training a lot of things.

wrong.
in face of good FC'ing and good player skills, SP amount isn't nothing
think if it like this: player skills and FC's are the tactical resources provided by the gang. SP is a strategical resource that only gives you more options.
I'm pretty damn sure that a lower SP guy can best me if he is smart about his flying and tactics.

I'm training all frigates, all weapon systems and support skills to a medium-level (standard certificate-like), then will branch out into Battlecruisers and Battleships one ship at a time. I'm skipping any skills that would take several days at the moment.
I like the flexibility to mix and match ships and weapon systems so it doesn't get boring. Once I can reasonably fly the ships/ship types/roles (somewhere akin to level 3 missioning) I plan to max out a selection of skills to 5. There's nothing worse than leaving a bad looking corpse |

I guess you'd say I'm a specialist, I maxed out everything that pertains to my tengu and now I am just training gunnery skills since I was (still am) terrible with them.
And yes, perfection makes a big difference. Those 5% increases seem insignificant, but when you consider it is 5% for each level, and it is that for each skill you train, it adds up fast. |

Hmm tought question specialist or generalist...
I'm a generalist in the idea i can practically jump in any ship with any fitting inmediately or in a couple of days top.
But in the heart i'm a strong Specialist. in the short way generalising it's more useful and efficient for the everyday but in the long way specialist turn into a massive advantage.
I can't remember how many times the simply act of train skill XX has led me to notice it just not open 1 or 2 new ships but a docen sinec you get acces to tech2 due the already advanced backup skills.
My lattest Antic, notice i had 2x Remap available and used it to focus train all leaderships skills to 5, then remap back to end maxing out all latest gunnery/missile and race ship up to BS lvl 5.
P.S: NO I DID NOT TRAIN THE MINNING LEADERSHIP SKILLS SCREW THEM!!!

Started off with the Minmatarr ships and got into a typhoon, then jumped on the Permatank Raven bandwagon and mulched missions for many moons. Got trained up to BS 5 on both before learning to fly every tech II ship type for Caldari and Minmatar (bar command and Black-ops), and now working on getting some capship skills.
Living in a WH helps wonderfully to get your skills trained up to Lvl 5, as you don't have the option to just pop out for a fresh skill book without some planning...
Running out of Lvl 5's to train now, best get the Amarr and Gallente ship skillbooks..... :)
