Three separate idiots each bought a few thousand cruise missiles I had fabricated for over a thousand times more than I was asking... Only noticed afterwards that I had been lucky enough to profit from someone buying off a stupid order price in the mission station I was in without looking. It worked well so I left my order up and made my second and third bill that way too! |

Back in the days of escrow, not-quite-faction-ships listed as faction ships was great. Prices were also known to drop now and then, I snapped up a bunch of pirate-faction ships pre-buff and resold for a chunk. Been casually plucking up things for resale since.
Also a big help was the day a corp/alliance I was in disbanded and left me the hangar (was in nullsec, hired a pilot from the alliance that pushed us out to move it) and sold a large portion of the BPO/BPC and ships that came with that score off as well. And some has been as simple as selling characters on the bazaar. |

No I didn't. I tried that and couldn't stand it.
1st bil was made via invention and manufacturing. The next few bills made via wormhole life style.

Man, that was a long time ago. Here's what I remember:
First Million May, 2003. Ninja mining Arkonor in a Probe somewhere deep in 0.0. I think I hacked away at that a couple of hours a night for a couple of weeks to get that first million. Refined the ore and sold the Megacyte and Zydrine at the NPC base bid prices of 1024 and 4096 ISK per unit, respectively. NPC entities had a hand in everything back then. Why a Probe? Probably because of its relatively large cargo hold. Couldn't afford a Cruiser or Battleship, the game was brand new and we all started with zilch. Mining Barges and Exhumers were months to years away.
First Billion June - August, 2003. Trading Robotics in South Lonetrek, in a Bestower. Back then, lotsa stuff was NPC stuff. Robotics were one of the more lucrative NPC trade items, netting tidy margins by hauling short distances between NPC sell stations and NPC buy stations. Back then, before the mechanics and skill requirements of the trade system evolved, it was possible to buy entire spawns of a trade good by strategically seeding layered buy orders. That made it possible to acquire the required volume of a given trade good necessary to make meaningful profits.
First Trillion January, 2004 - January 2012. Large-scale manufacturing and industrial material speculation. After a few months away from the game (but continuing training), I returned to join a couple of industrially-minded colleagues to develop a manufacturing venture. We started with missiles GÇô low initial capital investment, high volume and decent profit margin GÇô and as capital resources grew and T2 became available, moved into components and T2 ships. Our leading product was the Hulk, manufacturing and selling 20,000 units over the course of 3 years of production. Midway through the manufacturing era, we began supplementing income by investing heavily in industrial materials, with favorable results. Major expansions, in particular, were very good to us; technetium-heavy products and player-produced planetary materials being noteworthy examples of investment opportunities driven by game changes.
First Quadrillion Well, after making that first million, I thought a billion would be impossible. At a billion, I thought getting to a trillion would take forever. Right now, the notion of reaching a quadrillion ISK is downright ludicrous. But maybe anything is possible given time, luck and execution of a sound business model. Future efforts will focus on continuing to refine and execute large-scale investment and trade strategies.

made my first 5 bil in a few ways:
Grinding incursions Pirating (i kid you not, my first ransom i received was 750mil from an orca in lowsec- I still regret letting him go) PI
I currently have almost nothing in liquid isk- but i have 8 bil in market orders- which is great for me because
-it keeps my pvp funded -Orders require updating perhaps 1 or 2 times a day - My current levels of isk works for me- which means I don't need to grind anymore for sec or isk.
I agree that the statement is true- that you need isk to make isk - i personally only ever bought 2 plex for isk ( which i know is kinda cheating) but if you know how to make that isk work for you then i say go ahead and get the headstart you need. I'm with Brick on this one- make thouse carebearing b******s squeal.. |

I made my first billions mining for my corp, while others with better skills gun-mined the drones for shiny alloys. Unfortunately, we were communist, so all proceeds went into the wallet. It wasn't a big deal, because I was contributing enough to the pot that I never had requests for shiny things turned down.
After that gig I made more billions in the hisec mining gig. Boring, but at the time it worked.
After that I moved back to 0.0 and mined mercoxit mercilessly, making many more billions.
It was at that point that I was able to buy into some moon reaction chains, which made enough that I really didn't need to mine unless I was bored. Add into that planetary interaction, and making POS fuels on 0.0 planets, and I was doing well.
Now I'm back in hisec due to Real Life, and making occasional billions on hisec ores or ice if I need to AFK. Burn the land, boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me. |

Before the NPC loot nerf I would buy Meta 0 Loot in off hub mission systems and reprocess it for profit. Generally got 20% ROI. Now that the NPCs no longer drop Meta O loot, its not a profitable and the ROI is way down :(

I made my first billion mining kernite back in late '06 /early '07 On the advice of a friend who convinced me hauling it to mission hubs would make a tidy profit.
This was back when hulks were 500mil so I mined it in an Armageddon full of cargo expander 2s and miner 2s.
Not an experience I wish to repeat. |

On my original toon ( Before dropping the game for a year or so), it was when WHS first came out along with the probe launchers and probes..
For the first few days after the expansion came out Probe launchers were being sold at up to 1million each dropping to around 250k after a few days, then down to normal prices... considering they only cost around 10k to make... it was evil.. :-)

Oddly big losses are easier to remember than the big wins.
Missions + Covert Ops cloak arbitrage (pre invention days) for the initial ISK
After that S+I, patch speculation insurance fraud, contract trading were/are the big winners. Also an honourable mention for the day they removed shuttles as NPC items - not huge ISK amounts (although great ROI) but a manic and fun few hours. Fear God and Thread Nought |

First billion was running a courier service for low-volume-high-value goods for my corp, took a 10 to 15% cut of the Jita price for myself.
The first 5b came through station trading which I started because of the low scalability and somewhat high risk of the courier service. Elinor - lightweight semi-automatic daytrading helper Current version: 1.1.2 Beta |
