Well, the title pretty much sums it up. How did you make your first billion? If the story isn't exciting/you can't remember it, maybe you could do first 5b, 10b or whatever.
I made my first billion in maybe the most embarassing way possible. Through BLINK. To be frank, it's only recently I've really started doing much in the Market, and I've only made around 600m from that T_T. So yeah, not the most exciting of stories, but it was the most amazing feeling ever, knowing you're a billionaire.
So go on, share your stories! |

I bought items and ships at cheap prices in out of the way regions, transported them to more populated regions and sold them for a higher price. I also bought NPC goods and sold them to NPC buy orders while going between regions. I would take a load of items I bought from players and on my way back instead of flying an empty hauler/frieghter I transported NPC goods for sell to other NPCs. Now that bots have infested the NPC goods market it is no longer worth the time it takes to do the NPC trade goods route. |

I ran a private investment corp that took ISK from known corp members and used it to place salvage buy orders in various regions. Each "Regional Manager" received a full set of researched rig blueprints to make what rigs they could then sold them in their respective hubs. This was when rigs were brand new so the margin was exceptionally high. |

I made my first couple of billion isk through a combination of gifts from other players, ratting, mission running, station trading, and contract chasing (I bought a fully fitted rokh for 17 mil once just because it was one jump into low-sec). I don't remember exactly when I hit a billion, but I remember thinking when my wallet was ~500 mil or so: "man, I can buy ten more drakes if I lose mine!" |

Living as a cluless noob in Deklein back in 2006
I noticed that the selling price of Meta 4 large shield extenders was about 60% less than the going rate in The Forge, with several other meta items offering pretty good margins as well. So I bought out the entire region (and looted the corp repreocessing hangar), and spent several days flying between Deklein and Nonni in a Kestrel, taking about 30-50 mods at a time. With the ~20-30 mill profit each run made, I would buy a +3 implant and some ratting ammo and fly back and sell that in the alliance hub for about a 5M profit.
I ratted while I waited for my sell orders to clear (I could only do 9 market orders) I ratted and raised more liquid capital. After a few days I was able to buy and fit a Raven, which increased my ratting income nicely.
Eventually I got lucky and found a Dread Guristas spawn which dropped a DG invuln. I used the ~billion ISK I had accumulated, plus the invuln, to buy myself an alt who could fly a covetor and a viator... Back in the days of escrow, not-quite-faction-ships listed as faction ships was great. Prices were also known to drop now and then, I snapped up a bunch of pirate-faction ships pre-buff and resold for a chunk. Been casually plucking up things for resale since.
Also a big help was the day a corp/alliance I was in disbanded and left me the hangar (was in nullsec, hired a pilot from the alliance that pushed us out to move it) and sold a large portion of the BPO/BPC and ships that came with that score off as well. And some has been as simple as selling characters on the bazaar. |

Man, that was a long time ago. Here's what I remember:
First Million May, 2003. Ninja mining Arkonor in a Probe somewhere deep in 0.0. I think I hacked away at that a couple of hours a night for a couple of weeks to get that first million. Refined the ore and sold the Megacyte and Zydrine at the NPC base bid prices of 1024 and 4096 ISK per unit, respectively. NPC entities had a hand in everything back then. Why a Probe? Probably because of its relatively large cargo hold. Couldn't afford a Cruiser or Battleship, the game was brand new and we all started with zilch. Mining Barges and Exhumers were months to years away.
First Billion June - August, 2003. Trading Robotics in South Lonetrek, in a Bestower. Back then, lotsa stuff was NPC stuff. Robotics were one of the more lucrative NPC trade items, netting tidy margins by hauling short distances between NPC sell stations and NPC buy stations. Back then, before the mechanics and skill requirements of the trade system evolved, it was possible to buy entire spawns of a trade good by strategically seeding layered buy orders. That made it possible to acquire the required volume of a given trade good necessary to make meaningful profits.
First Trillion January, 2004 - January 2012. Large-scale manufacturing and industrial material speculation. After a few months away from the game (but continuing training), I returned to join a couple of industrially-minded colleagues to develop a manufacturing venture. We started with missiles GÇô low initial capital investment, high volume and decent profit margin GÇô and as capital resources grew and T2 became available, moved into components and T2 ships. Our leading product was the Hulk, manufacturing and selling 20,000 units over the course of 3 years of production. Midway through the manufacturing era, we began supplementing income by investing heavily in industrial materials, with favorable results. Major expansions, in particular, were very good to us; technetium-heavy products and player-produced planetary materials being noteworthy examples of investment opportunities driven by game changes.
First Quadrillion Well, after making that first million, I thought a billion would be impossible. At a billion, I thought getting to a trillion would take forever. Right now, the notion of reaching a quadrillion ISK is downright ludicrous. But maybe anything is possible given time, luck and execution of a sound business model. Future efforts will focus on continuing to refine and execute large-scale investment and trade strategies.

I currently have almost nothing in liquid isk- but i have 8 bil in market orders- which is great for me because
-it keeps my pvp funded -Orders require updating perhaps 1 or 2 times a day - My current levels of isk works for me- which means I don't need to grind anymore for sec or isk.
I agree that the statement is true- that you need isk to make isk - i personally only ever bought 2 plex for isk ( which i know is kinda cheating) but if you know how to make that isk work for you then i say go ahead and get the headstart you need. I made my first billions mining for my corp, while others with better skills gun-mined the drones for shiny alloys. Unfortunately, we were communist, so all proceeds went into the wallet. It wasn't a big deal, because I was contributing enough to the pot that I never had requests for shiny things turned down.
After that gig I made more billions in the hisec mining gig. Boring, but at the time it worked.
After that I moved back to 0.0 and mined mercoxit mercilessly, making many more billions.
It was at that point that I was able to buy into some moon reaction chains, which made enough that I really didn't need to mine unless I was bored. Add into that planetary interaction, and making POS fuels on 0.0 planets, and I was doing well.
Now I'm back in hisec due to Real Life, and making occasional billions on hisec ores or ice if I need to AFK. Burn the land, boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me. |

Buying low and selling high meta items. Last year back before meta item changes and when meta 3 and meta 4 energy neutralizers were multi millions isk (gremlin, unstable- both medium and heavy). Well good old molden heath mission hub saw lots of these items drop from level three and four mission runners. I realized the only buy orders for these medium unstables (meta 4) were at like 1000 isk when they were selling for close to ten million in other regions.
Well people were selling these to the thousand isk orders..so I upped them to 50-100k and saw a massive dump of these neuts. I also found this in faction ammo (plenty of isk to make) and scout projectile weapons showed similar success. For a few months I had no buying competition of these multi million isk items I was acquiring for mere thousands. Eventually a few traders caught on and I lost the desire to one isk.
I didn't even realize at the time what I had done as I was still very new to market stuff and thought I'd make a few hundred million. One day I realized I had hundreads of medium and heavvy gremlin and unstables each. I took a large chunk to syndicate and made silly isk with null inflation. The rest I dumped to the highest buy orders in major hubs...still making millions per unit sold (some cases 8 million per medium unstable. So ultimately turned into my first billions I was visibly seeing made and added to my wallet, I had always hovered around a billion isk but that was long term accumulation of isknot instant dumpage.
Just because I feel like sharing for new guys likely reading through here looking to become affluent in the universe. I've since not done much market stuff to that extent in 8 months. I have experimented with tags used in lp purchases. I found regions that lvl4 faction missions dropped tags but the Npc buy orders were five jumps away. I placed buy orders at fraction of the Npc prices in hi and low sec pockets not reached by the Npc order. People are dumb and sold me these tags for 125k and I went and sold them for 1.8-2.2 mil in RENs and hek. I also used these tags for my own lp trade but don't mission or facwar so usually spent points fast but saw almost 80% profit on republic fleet warp disruptors. My first two years of eve I ran lvl4s and never broke a billion while maintaining a pvp career. It's possible but I now believe its quite hard to be a level 4 running pvp guy with one account making billions.
Of late combat boosters..absurd. I ran a pos for three months constantly reacting and producing with all materials self-attained, aka 100% pi'd pos fuel, harvested gas, acquire bpc through Ladar combats. I took my pos down a few weeks back because it became irrelevant. This kind of isk only becomes available with several accounts. I'm not here bragging by any means but showing you don't need big sov moons and towers or even expensive dives in wh space to be space rich isn't needed, but yes surely give tremendously. Yeah I'm not even close to some people doing that and couldn't replace multiple supers or fund an alliance, but I can run three accounts now with plex and and got there with just one account. |

I sold skillbooks.
After 2-3 months of playing Eve I was penniless most of the time. Invested 5m in skillbooks on a whim, and put them up one jump away at Hek at high margins. Overnight I had made 15m. I sold skills at Hek initially, and once I had some money (and trained up some market orders), I filled up my cargo with skillbooks and put them up for sale all over the galaxy, at really high margins. Never looked back. |

My story is simple, i'm lazy and was sick shooting red boxes after 2 weeks so i started trading. In late 2009 i loaned 40m from a friend and started trading meta 4 buying regionwide in Tash Murkon and selling with ridiculous profit in Jita. After 3 weeks i was raking in cash and expanded to buy/sell in Amarr, Dodi and Rens. I was using the buy/sell difference in all four main hubs to my advantage and let Red Frog doing all the hauling work back then the profit was crazy but i was getting sick of handling 300 buy/sell orders in each hub.
Late 2010 i was going to quit meta 4 trading but not before some market manipulation to maximize my cash out, the one that i still won't forget was getting Focused Modulated Pulse Energy Beam I up to 59m sell and almost 40m buy. Sometime in between i made my first 1b. After the cash out i had about 50b cash and started contract trading and if meta 4 trading was very lucrative contract trading was like having a personal ISK printing machine with a lot less work. My weekly profit was in between 3b and 6b depending on how often i updated my contracts and the best part i just needed 1h daily to maintain the 6b weekly profit. If you break that down to ISK/h, it's absolute crazy. I intentionally missed the good times of west and grey and Kwark and co. although i knew what they were doing and how many cash they were making it sounded like a lot of work. After Kwark revealed how many accounts and contracts he handled, i knew it was right for me i didn't joined the gold rush.
After CCP killed the whole contract market and transfered it to the regular market i sticked to faction and deadspace stuff trading. First i thought my profit would dimish a lot but the major advantage of having faction and deadspace stuff in the regular market, the orders arn't expiring after 14 days, so i can be more lazy after all.
Today i'm just trading a little bit here and there still having a decent 3b weekly profit with minimal effort. |

It basically entailed selling faction mods for 2 or 3 times their actual value due to a sorting glitch in the old contract system. More on this tale can be found here |

Well I do not recall exactly when I made my first billion as the isk still goes out as fast as it comes in. I have has many billions of isk in assets for years.
But the first time I had several billion in my wallet at once was when I sold my first jump freighter. It cost me about 6.4 billion to make and I sold it for 7.9 billion. Market was actually 8.2 when I brought it to Jita to sell, but since these ships sell in low volume, the 0.01 or in this case 50,000 isking brought me down to 7.9 before it actually sold. only took about 30 minutes to sell though.
I just wish they were easier to sell, I really liked the challenge of building it at the lowest possible cost. After all they are the only T2 capital ship in the game. I plan on building many more. |

ECM modules and ships.
I used to fly these a lot in gangs, if ever I died I'd have to jump forever to refit. Well screw that. I started to buy in bulk, and putting them up for sale in the local market I found out that I was obviously not the only one in that situation. Aha! It then expanded into hauling a whole range of modules, and selling basic T1 ships - that was probably around the time I made my first billion. From there it became buy orders for modules and building shed loads of T1 ships and rigs Frell |
