Wait! Listen right, it makes sense.
Everyone (including me) wants things to be like they were. I miss the days of mining in a bantam for massive 50k returns, when cruisers were a distant memory, but something to look forward to. When all the possibilities that are yet to be explored are the most exciting thing. Every one of us have something we miss, this is argument number 1.
CCP have changed the game a lot since release, are still changing it, and I reckon must have learned a lot of lessons. A lot of the players here are upset that their chosen specialisation is boosted then nerfed then changed. A reset would benefit them because they'd know what the dilly is, and could get down on it much more effectively (this is assuming ccp have found a balance by this point). People would be able to try a new avenue in the game. This, is argument number 2.
It is my estimation that, once the all-time players-online record stops being broken at regular interval, the game stops growing in size and starts dying. Ideally, I would like to see an exponentially increasing amount of new people subscribe to the game each period, this would benefit everyone with no exception. Would be newbies are frightened away however, once they have done even a tiny amount of research, and find out that due to the Eve skill training system they will essentially never catch up with other players. Although you can argue that resets will get rid of an equal number of veteran players who don't want to lose all they've 'worked' for, I believe boredom would eventually have the same effect on these vets. And also, if the players consider playing the game work, perhaps they should Take A Step Back And Realise It's Just A GameÖ, and don't belong here anyway. Eve is at heart, a game of competition with other people, otherwise we might as well all play X2 or Freelancer. Periodic resets will bring in more players, and this is argument number 3.
Periodic resets are already tried and tested in some MMOGs, like Brower based Planetarion, Starsphere and others. The game will grow and not stagnate, we can take lessons from nature. Some chavs set a field on fire summer last year, near where I live, but later all the mordor-like steaming blackness turned quickly into the greenest green on the whole field.
I know this idea may seem a bit extreme, but it is also right. Understand, that all you are losing is items and things and digital money. You will keep your experience and knowledge of the game. Veteran PvPers will still be that, and still have the big advantage over newbies. People often use the phrase It's Just A GameÖ when defending their previous killing of a forum-whiner, and these are the last people I expect to leave when their assets are incinerated in the reset.

nothing would really change. Stuff would still have to be nerfed and boosted, the balance between pvp and pve would still have to be altered and it would be a race to assault frigs and cruisers rather than a race to battleships.
The key point is that the people that wanted the changes are still here - if the servers were reset they would still moan to get sentry guns rather than forming groups to deal with piracy, 0.0 would still get conquered by alliances etc. Its just the names that would change.

Perhaps it could be interesting to have a restart again with the changes since actual launch.

Problem is you wouldn't get the old days back. People would know how to make isk and you would see people in cruiser after 3 days. Only new content can bring back this discovery feeling.

Pursuing this argument to its logical conclusion, if we should reset the game now because your first days in Eve are the most exciting, then we should do it again the day after that so we can enjoy it again. And the day after that so we can enjoy it again. And the day after that...
Much as I loved Groundhog Day, I'd rather play Eve thanks.

I completely agree. I read all the old forum posts and messages vets post about how things were and I can't help feeling how much better it must've been. There were things to acheive, things that nobody had done before, and there was things to aim for.
What do players have to aim for today? Once you have a battleship, that's it. Any half-decent player will have a BS after 2 months. The gameplay itself is all that is left, and that is pointless since there will always be players who have more SP than you and thus have a huge advantage by default. Doesn't matter if they've never done a seconds worth of PvP in their entire gaming life, they'll still be at the advantage. And for what? Sitting on their arse for 2 years watching skill points go up?
I'd have thought more people would have been for this. Given that all EVE has to offer to players is pure gameplay and not the getting-the-next-thing mentality of most MMORPGs, they'd want things to be equal and thus more fun.
Guess it's hard to give up 'power', though. ---------------- Haha, stupid monkey! Now I'VE got the Oscar! Enjoy your worthless gun! |

I suffered one rollback ... was annoying, to express it nicely.
Your arguments have some point, but no, I am not betatesting here for 2.5 years and have my assets and skills resetted - if this reset ever happens, you can have my stuff.

Thanks all for your... insightful and constructive replies.
I don't understand, from where I stand it seems that the only reason anyone could possible have for opposing a reset so strongly is that they are overly attached to their digital assets. But this can't be... surely it's only a game? Surely we must all flame newbies who post their dismay about being pirated and losing their hard-earned badger 1. Flamed by multi-billion owning pirates who claim It's Just A GameÖ, and who claim if they lost their badger one they'd just take it like a man.
A lot of you seem to be saying, that the money you payed for 2 years was solely for buying your in-game assets. They hold that value and you would only ever sell them for real world money, because you don't pay to play the game and have fun - you pay for things on screen that don't exist.
And no PAPA I am not a newbie who wants to bring everyone down to my level. I own many battleships, make loads of money, have craploads of skillpoints and can get a new BS in 2 days if I need to.
But I don't want things to be this way. ------------

Like I said in my original post, that you read, I've seen this employed before with success. No more customers were lost to this than would otherwise be lost to boredom after stagnation - although many new ones were gained at the prospect of starting on equal footing.
I mean at one point, potential customers will have to think "What's the point of eve, when I will start behind everyone else? And when Ultima Online 4 has just been released?" ------------

Edited by: Jim Steele on 24/03/2005 12:37:03 So your saying, as ive been playing, and paying a lot of money subscription wise for 12 months, all that ive worked for should be scrapped and my skills that i have payed money to train should all be reset to zero just so someone who hasnt played as long as me can catch me up?
I know i dont have the most skillpoints in this game, nor the most money but i can still beat someone with more skillpoints than me if im in a bigger ship.
If they reset skills and money and assets etc back to the beginning well thats my subscription canceled.
Only way id think about it is if they made EvE 2 but even then they'd have to be some bloody good new features..

I often play games only once. Because, when I finished one, there isn't a whole lot I can do again the next time I do it. I don't find playing it again to be satisfying.
For there to be any reset in eve, something huge must be offered in compensation. A working NPC substructure, viable solutions for piracy, industrialists, etc.
I don't see that happen, ever, so no, I'm not for a reset.
Also, sup goon, i didnt mean that about your sister

Both Planetarion and Starwhatev offered 'New rounds', in which gameplay etc were improved. Being such simple game,s this was acceptable, after all, they were games with a fixed lifespan in mind (set goal, set timeframe in which to achieve it).
Eve isn't that.

You wouldn't be more weak if everybody had the same amount of SP as you. You're not loosing anything. If you've already gotten and flown all the ships ingame, why bother playing? The only reason is gameplay, and gameplay in which someone wins by default because they have more SP than you isn't very good gameplay. I wouldn't be arguing for this IF you could work to get more SP, but you can't.
