Your idea is promising, but it would be changing a huge part of the basic framework of eve and you couldn't guarantee there wouldn't be any issues with your way. Unless a good majority of EVE's population decides they want this, or some lead dev pops a cataclysmic boner over the idea, then it will probably not see any second mentions.
I also disagree that stargates are the major flaw to EVE's pvp. The only reason you would think that is because they are so important, but shift the importance on location to say.. planets, and the issues are still the same - ganking, safespots, blobbing. The importance to fighting at gates is simply the only measure of control you can have over the situation, or system. Yes, it gets boring, but it can be spiced up with locations in systems that are more important than simple gate travel. Like in any strategy game you have to fight for and defend your resources, EVE could be made more like that.
Not talking about actual ship and module balance, EVE's pvp is heavily reliant on local chat, the map and safespots. The map already got a severe nerf, with hopefully its entire removal of pilots in space for 0.0. The local chat is the only way of instantly verifying of who is in that system. Even scanning can't pick up further than 15au. With local gone, and pilots in space gone, it becomes a game of who has the most up to date and accurate intel instead of sheer numbers. Clueless travellers in 0.0 might actually die, and blockades might actually work, and might actually get broken up. Blobs wars won't happen because unlike the map, people do make mistakes and a clever fleet commander might be able to hide some of his forces, making the enemy engage on bad terms instead of immediately blob at safespot. Safespots being less useful as a regrouping point will also go a long way to fixing things, and the scan bonuses to cov ops ships is slowly getting there.
The ganking part, well, thats more to do with ship hp and overall firepower. Right now your lock time has more of an effect on who wins the fight than actual dps. Everyone uses tech 2 guns, and stacks dmg mods because its the only way of getting a sure-fire kill - to******before they know whats going on. The other part is due to map and local, no one needs 5 interceptors and three battleships to kill a lone traveller, but thats what it takes sometimes with the way instajumps, wcs, the map and local chat work.
Btw, nice to see you back, if you are back. Despite EVE not being perfect, or even getting there at a reasonable pace, its still got craploads more potential than any pansy sailing game. And its also much easier to work on fixing the current system instead of reinventing EVE, considering how long it took to get here. _____________________________________ Perpetually driven, your end is our beginning.
