Thx again for all the great replies. It was a pleasure to work on this project and give back to what I consider one of the best gaming communities around.
The project started with me wanting to create a cg based eve movie. At the time we did not yet have a way to extract the models from the game engine so I decided I would recreate the ships from scratch. I built the Scorp, Apoc, Blackbird, Rifter, Maller and Punisher in that time. Each model was created at a much higher polygon count and was taking a fair amount time to complete. During this time I was posting updates on our private forums to try and get some interest in the project. Draxiums then came to me and asked me to try this tool he'd been working on. Through a bit of early testing we were finally able to extract the pod mesh (choosen for it's simple geometry). Slowly, through continued testing we were able to figure out how to correctly extract more and more of the ship library. Finally we had a tool that could extract the complete ship library and with it came a whole new realm of possiblities. We then had to correctly reassign all the textures using UV coords. Finally we had to make a few minor modifications to the textures. So to answer a lot of questions, what you see in this trailer are the same meshes and textures you see in the game. This by far took the longest amount of time to complete since in many situations we were flying blind. Overall for me the hardest part has been recreating the effects the game engine creates. It's been a real fun challenge and one that I plan to continue to work on. I hope this sheds some light on the origins of this project.

Depressing, very depressing. Please tell me that you guy(s) are professionals with CGI, or maya, or whatever it is that is needed to do something like that, and it isn't just an hobby, or I just go kill myself. :P
I really wish I reach that level of competence in my real life work, I can't think of any words that would praise my admiration for the work you guys did.
Don't care if it doesn't represent real eve gameplay, not a frap vid, whatever. It just looks damn good. The music kinda reminds me of a BSG episode as someone commented, but then again BSG alway had great soundtrack imho, even the original series (oops, my age starts to show here, hehe)
Well, great job, looking forward to see the movie.

But, there is one thing that I did not think of until I read the post about how these guys should be hired for television advertisement in the US. Excuse me for saying the name of another MMOG, but TheMatrixOnline is going to be advertising (if the have not already) on the television, and are capable of taking a bit of our playerbase as well as the future MMOG'ers to come. This can be deterred though. I agree with the statement that "A video of this calibre should be aired on television as an advertisement", it needs to be done. Eve-online has become what it is by word of mouth, imagine the possibilities of what it could be by word of media? Your profit margin would triple within the first two months, as well as you would still be in competition for the largest MMORPG. A Video of this calibre as an advertisement on television is NEEDED, I behoove the Dev team of CCP to get together on this, possibly with EVOL and get this done for the betterment of all...
The use of this film or similar animated footage for commercial advertising would break consumer protection laws and would therefor be illegal. You cant advertise a product with images of something that it is not.
The technical beauty of WildCard's work is clear for all to admire but an advert for EVE it can never be....well not on a commercial stage anyway.

Edited by: Shira d''Radonis on 19/04/2005 00:04:19 This was most excellent indeed. I may have missed it, but does this series have a title??
I myself have been working on an EVE mini-series using 3D programs. I'm glad to see that more people are going into this area because IMO most of the other movies are like home movies and really only interesting to hardcore PvPers or people who were there. They document an event but for the most part lack a story.
I hope to get a trailer out for my mini-series, Visions of EVE, in a few weeks... could be two months.
And unfortunately, I'm pretty much going it alone... -----------------------------------------------

Well, at least not if they try to pass it off as the game itself. A simple label could be sufficient to avoid lawsuits. Afterall, game commercials use cinemas from the games all the time... though I suppose since the cinemas are included with the game it might be different.
But without trying to belittle the fantastic job done here, CCP is a whole company. I'm sure they could come up with something on par to this quality for commercial purposes if they were so inclined to do so. -----------------------------------------------

Edited by: Admiral Seafort on 19/04/2005 01:26:49 Great little video that demonstrates incredible potential. It would be perfect if it had some of the type of dramatic intro and GFX techniques shown in LLeBRing's Vengeance Of The Fallen - The Exodus Chronicle. Also, the "exhaust trail" things remind me of Homeworld...perhaps the kind of particle effects seen in Nexus - The Jupiter Incident would be more suitable.
All in all an incredible trailer and it really does a great job of showing off what at this point promises to be some of the most gorgeous EVE-based footage we've seen.

You freaking rock!! That's all i can say. Hours and hours of this stuff has gone through my head, but I have no talent or experience. I would team up with CCP and make a series on DVD that I could buy called the "History in EVE" and use real Alliances and battles as your stories.
FREAKING ROCK!!! "HDY building it's way to greatness one ship at a time."
