Edited by: Chribba on 09/05/2005 14:29:07 Edited by: Chribba on 09/05/2005 14:27:40 Edited by: Chribba on 30/04/2005 00:45:38 While browsing through sell order/auctions I realized how hard it is to keep track of things and harder to find modules and items that are of interest.
So I decided to have a go at making an auction site, some of you already know my other service - EVE-Files, this is an attempt in the same direction but for all you sellers/traders.
Of course a glance at "EVE-Bay" will be very little interesting as there are currently no auctions. But maybe you all can help there, by just trying it a few times - see if it makes your sale easier or not.
Maybe your next auction can be a suitable one for testing EVE-Bay?
This is not an attempt to make this forum die out. I can still see your auction posts in here, but maybe instead there is an URL to your items at EVE-Bay. :)
Point your browsers to http://www.myevebay.com and have a try today.
All feedback and comments are most welcome.
!! NOTE !! You will bid and pay using ISK (in-game currency) only! You are only allowed to auction/sell in-game EVE items. Other items will be removed.
Regards,

I was thinking starter, as he/she is the one that will receive the money. But I will not enforce any tax payments, it is rather I wish to have a little something for the service, but if the seller does not pay, it will be like that.
I have no intension to hunt anyone down for the ISK. Just hoping some will pay as a thanks.

Getting an error when trying to actually start an auction. Not sure why, trying different things.

What do you put in each field?

Nothing special. Just was testing one out. I put some random stuff in the title and description. I am now thinking that I shouldn't have stuck the "mil" in where you put the price. That was probably it. If you could change that so you can specify that it might be nice. Not sure if you can though.

Edited by: shooting dutchman on 30/04/2005 09:11:32 maybe make it possible to enter the end date yourself instead of choosing how long the auction takes.
and maybe ask people for ingame isk as a donation and not 1% a item, because I don't think people with large auction with lot's of money will put it on the site...

Originally by: Zarthanon I prefer to put "70 million" as opposed to "70,000,000" but whatever works.
Should have fixed that, you can now use M as million instead of typing the whole number (eg 75M).
Originally by: shooting dutchman btw It would be maybe nice if people can see the eve name of the person holding the auction somewhere on the site, so people know who are you trading with.
Working on ideas for that too, perhaps making the users register via the in-game browser to pull their character name is a good idea?
Originally by: shooting dutchman maybe make it possible to enter the end date yourself instead of choosing how long the auction takes.
and maybe ask people for ingame isk as a donation and not 1% a item, because I don't think people with large auction with lot's of money will put it on the site...
I thought of that and found using a set time frame the easiest way, but I shouldn't have any major problems implementing own specified dates, the main reason I haven't done this already is beacuse the timezones sometimes are quite annoying to calculate.
As for the 1%, asking for donations most of the times do not generate any response, tends to look more like a beggar. But also that's why it say EVE-Bay wishes to receive 1%.
I am not sure how you all feel when selling something for 100M, a 1M giveaway isn't that much, or? Same for a 1B sale, 10M isn't that much?
But of course you all know that better than me since you are the auctioners - not me, I'm just a buyer :)
Give me your comments and thoughts on this as it is you who might be using the service and therefor you that have the most influence on the progress of EVE-Bay.

Registering via IGB is worthless as it can easily be faked.
Make an optional "verification" option, which confirms character name, just like e-mail addresses are usually confirmed - by sending a verification evemail to that character, and then he can confirm receiving it with the IGB.
If you try, you'll see that sending mouseclicks and keypresses to EVE is quite simple. You could make a windows application that would connect to your site's database and automatically send all "confirmation-request" evemails.

I won't know if people would pay 1% fee everytime, when people have a lot of items to sell they will lose a lot of profit.
I don't want to sound to negative, but people got a choise of doing it for free on eve-forum of doing it your site.

the auction is comming along quite nicely, but there is only one problem I've noticed so far..
I set a reserve price that hasn't been met yet, but it list in the auction details as met.. no big problem though I'll sell at what the auction ends at :)

I've bidded on Gary's bpc auction, but in "my bids", it seems as if I've bidded on this auction, and not Gary's.

Just use EVE Time, problem solved

1% is the same as sale tax, and sale tax is in imo a pain :( .. Maybe ask for 0.1% instead? If your site becomes popular, it'll pay off in the end, as I'd reckon a lot more people would pay the fee.
Some suggestions:
- Give the seller the choice between having a hidden and a seen reserve.
- Give the bidders the choice between being anynomunos (no clue how to spell that word) and not.
- Let people use "_" in their name

Will remove the notices of any tax/fee for now and leave it to future things instead.
What do you others think about hidden/seen reserve, and should the reserve be seen in ISK or just notice like now?
The bidder is anonymous to all except the seller, who only see the current top bidder, but it is easily removed, what do you think?
Added "_" and spaces to login names.

Very nice site mate.
I put up a few items myself to see how it goes and to help pull a little interest over to the site.
That site has alot of potential.
I like how pics can be added to auctions.

A few improvements I can reccomend.
Make the site usable from the ingame browser. Maybe a "lighter" interface, so it would display correctly even at small resolutions, and a more compatible color scheme.
Make the users on the site able to request an e-mail when they get outbid. Sure, this would require some resources, but not anywhere near what's required by loads of people hammering the site to see the exact current standings.
If you are a bit programing savy, make a RSS backend so that people can get updates even easier :)

A simple verification function is in place under "My pages". Some clicky clicky of you in-game but well worth those 2 minutes for a serious user.

Will give in-game browser usage some serious thoughts.
If thought of emails on outbid, but decided to leave it alone for a while. But may be worth it if the service gets popular.
I doubt that more than a handfull of people will use a RSS feed but I have it on my todo list now.
Thank you.

Edited by: DrXavier on 01/05/2005 11:31:43 Great. This is something I have been thinking I would like to see for a little while now. I was very happy to see this post and I will try to get some auctions on there to help get things going. I will be checking it for things I wish to buy as well, so everyone put yours up too!
Looks to be a useful tool.
Suggestions:
1. If there is no buyout price such as in http://www.myevebay.com/item.dxd?id=12 on the main page instead making the buyout price in red = the current bid, just use the word "none" or use a dash "-". I would like to know whether there is or is not a buyout price on the auction without even opening it.
2. Change the way the rating system is done. Either get rid of it altogether, or turn it into a system that only allows you to give a rating if you have won an item from a person. I just accidentally gave user MachZERO 100% seller rating because I wanted to see what the little plus sign link did. Allowing anyone to rate anyone without restriction leaves the system open for griefing. Also, please force people to give a "reason" why they are giving the rating, don't just let them click the + or the - and be done with it. That way if they say something like "just cause" or "this seller sucks" then we can ignore it.

That should already be in place, if it has no BuyOut it will not be any red text.
As for "12" the BuyOut option was used and the auction ended. Thus the current bid became the buyout price, of which it shows. But will fix that on the listing as well.
But for normal auctions that hasn't ended and no buyout is available there should not be any red text.

Thanks will keep it in mind :)
Other notes: Did an update to the bidding system, if a start bid is set it will be the lowest bit to start with, this was not happening before.
Eg start bid 50M then the first bid that can be made is 50M no matter bid increase etc, good or bad way?
Is there any use for ppl to be able to bid 25M if the seller sets start at 50M?

Good way
Originally by: Chribba Is there any use for ppl to be able to bid 25M if the seller sets start at 50M?
Not really. If we want to get lower bids than what we want for an item, we have the possibility to have a reserve.
Originally by: me - Give the seller the choice between having a hidden and a seen reserve
Originally by: Chribba What do you others think about hidden/seen reserve [...] ?
We can put the reserve in the "description" if we want to have it out in the open, so this ain't that important after all.
Some more suggestions :)
- Make it possible to edit auctions, so if you loose the item or whatever, you can tell bidders about it etc.
- Show the sellers name on both the "Home" page and the "Auctions" page.
- Make a place to put sell orders as well maybe?

Wondering if the ratings system may be buggy?
I've sold one item on your site. Everything has gone flawlessly so far. But I've managed to get a negative seller rating?!?
75% / 25% <--- according to this I've sold 4 items... 3 with good feedback and 1 with negative?
Kinda confused with the rating system is all.

The rating system: Currently you are only allowed to give one "vote" to a user, either + or - As you say this may not be much of use. Perhaps removing it total an add the + - to the comments instead, that way you can comment a user and give rating, weather it is when buying or not. Thoughts?
Will try make a smart way of adding categories and thus make them browseable. Same for adding sellername in all pages.
Originally by: Ras Blumin - Make it possible to edit auctions, so if you loose the item or whatever, you can tell bidders about it etc.

And I thought you actually had the items being sold? ;)) What types should be editabel? Currently editing is not allowed since I felt that it might allow users to modify their auctions a negative way, eg increasing buyout prices or reserve as the items get popular, but I may have to rethink?
What do you mean by your last suggestion?

Sounds good to me. Perhaps limit this to the winner of the auction?

I was only thinking about the text, but you could let people edit the other stuff as well. Maybe let the text be editable at all times, and only let the other stuff be editable for an hour/¢ an hour? This could be nice in case you make a typo or smthn like that (or forget to set a proper end time, oops )

edit - As an example for why editing could be nice - Click meh!. Seller has not stated the location of the nocx, which imo is very important.

Question is if we want location? Perhaps the seller puts it in the description instead.
Why you ask, well for example someone auctions a Jove BS ;) Do he/she really want to reveal the location other than to the winner?
Sure a user may just simple leave the location field empty if so, but that field would be just like putting the location in the description I think.
But of course I will implement it if you all think there is a need for that field.

The "Welcome" name of auction winners/sellers may be wrong, I will look up this during the day and fix asap.

Thanks! Error fixed now.
The part about driving up the prices is good, should such a list of bidders be viewable to all or just the sellers?
As to flame one to death, well maybe just allow a winner to post their comment?
And you are right about it needs some work, hopefully I will get there sometime :)

Feature added: Real-time info of your auction.
I added a feature so that you can easily link your EVE-Bay auction on other forums/services in the form of an image.
Example here
How to do this? Simply post an image here (image button) and use the following link: http://www.myevebay.com/item_image.dxd?id=ID
Remember to _change_ the ID to the id of your auction. And also remember to use the link above, DO NOT copy the full URL you get when surfing to the link as it is different from the one typed above!!
Also perhaps for nicer post I would recommend that you center the image and perhaps link the image to your auction.
A post may look like this: [ center ][ url="http://www.myevebay.com/item.dxd?id=20" ][ IMG ]http://www.myevebay.com/item_image.dxd?id=20[ /IMG ][ /url ][ /center ]

Edited by: Takagamu on 09/05/2005 10:52:00 Um yeah, check my eve-bay topic ... description is cut off right and at the bottom.
I'd check the length, add a CRLF there and make the height of the image dynamic in order to get the image right.
Other suggestions: - Get a better provider, quite a few downtimes :/ - Allow us to edit all fields of an auction, when nobody stated a bid yet. If there is a bid, block them like it is now. - Add a field "Location", so we can tell the bidder where the item is. This field must be editable everytime, even when there are bids. - Don't show this "No image available"-Image when there is no image. Simply let the space free (if possible). - Implement a history so I can see who bidded (how much) on my item (for security purposes and in order to get in contact with other bidders). - Send a mail when a bid was placed (or an overview once a day, because of traffic issues). - Add a "multiple" input field to the form, so I can create e.g. 5 BPC packages at a time (5 different auctions). Lock it down to 5 inserts at a time, so people can't spam.
Keep up the work :)
---- - Change the default sort order under "My auctions" to TIME LEFT descending, so the closed auctions get to the bottom of the list.

Great job. I like the look of it, it's clean and easy to use. I setup an account and already posted an auction. I will continue to post on here and on your site.
Keep it up and everyone, let's make eve-bay as popular as Ebay.
This sell forum is WAY too active for the tools that are provided us (i.e. no search function) so it's nice to have a good alternative.

Noted down your suggestions and will start with some of them asap. The Location request was prompted before as well and I decided not to implement it at this time as it would be easier to use the descriptioin. As for editing fields, a good way may be to allow edit of everything if there is no bid yet yes.
A private history to the seller could be implemented. Image removal on "no image" is easy too. Will look over the "real-time image" text.
Email on bid, yes and no, I have thoughts of it but it is currently not on top of the list.
Multiple auctions should be doable fairly easy as well. And the sort order for auctions should be set now.
Not sure about the "better provider" suggestion though ;)) It is currently a dedicated 100mbit link, however I have experienced some packet loss on the TS-server for the .US users, so I know there are routing issues currently, but that is nothing I can do anything about. Plus I must mention that last week Wed-Fri there was major issues as I lost my DNS-servers which also points EVE-Bay.
That might have been some of the downtimes you talk about, and that was unlucky as the DNS and EVE-Bay are not on the same links, but I have added more DNS-servers to prevent this from happening again (More info here).
Thank you for your suggestions.

Yeah I noticed that too, I thought I fixed that before as well but apparently it didn't. But I am aware of it so I will be taking care of it.
As for the "multiple items" it has now been fixed. You can chose amount of items on the sell page.

Fixed some issues with starting bid, text-wrap of the real-time images. Multiple auctions (of same item).
Sellers can now see the bidders on their auctions (just go to the item page and it is where the bidding form is for buyers).
"No Image" - removed.
Sortorder of "my auctions" sorted on "time left" instead of ID. More sorting coming later (same as for auctions).

If you click someone's username, you can see which character is the "owner" of the evebay acc., if the "owner" has verified his/her char-name. You can see how to do that on the "my pages" page iirc.

A shame there isn't an auction system IN-game. Imo, having to view a forum out of game to purchase an in-game item detracts from the overall gaming experience.

Edited by: Strikeman on 30/05/2005 16:03:06 I personally find the idea of this auction very intresting, however, when i clicked the linkie today, I arrive on a very nice website for EVE Auctions, but there are no auctions there
As has happened with any auction website before, this won't work before CCP endorses one of them to be the official EVE-Online Auction site and the moderators lock down all auctions that are still posted in this forum.
I *very much* like the idea, again, I wanted to use it badly but the EVE Community has to be *forced* to use it or they won't use it at all (as u can clearly see right now). A sticky just isn't gonna cut it.
It has to be a new forum rule or it's not gonna work, like this: no more auctions here, go to *this* website.
This is completely up to the devs now. I'm pretty much pretty sure the mods wouldnt mind all the auctions being moved to a real auction site. I know alot of the sellers wouldnt mind, immediately takes care of the spam in some auction threads.
edit: this would also return this forum to it's normal state; Want To Sell, not Want To Auction. It'll also help (imho) in keeping this forum more readable. It moves too fast now. U make a post today and without bumping it it's on page 15 by tomoz ... --

Ya the site needs to be endorsed by CCP to get much attention. Truely I would of used the site but then again it gets little traffic at all compared to here.
See if you can do more promotions and such on it and see about getting it out there more. EVE-Radio, EVE-I, EVE Guardian, and see if CCP will put a seal of approval on it. --------------------------------------------------- Ummm ya.... |

Thanks for all kind words :)
And I totally agree with you, the traffic needs to get directed by a larger force (read CCP) if sites like this should work, I'm not saying my site should be the one but I do think we need a better way to auction away items, and until CCP makes their own auction features they really should help moving the traffic to a suitable place.
And yes it's very boring to look at the site when there are no auctions... Which also lower the interest of developing it further as the daily average visitors and usage is lower than the the effort put into it - so CCP a little help here?
CCP should take the time to grab some "fans" who develop services and talk to them, I think all parties would benefit from joined forces.

Cool site. We just need to get it running. I think it will help ppl a lot, because the sellboard here is getting flooded. Myevebay has a nice interface and it is easy to keep track of orders.
I suggest that we try to get more ppl there by using it. I know I will put some small time items there. Better smalltime than no time! And I suggest other newbies do the same!

I'm selling the "Collectors Items" of 31 capsules... which are impossible to obtain now, if I understand right.
Would you mind, Chribba, if I still placed an auction thread here in the forum but provide a brief description & link to your site for the bidding, and leave the thread here for just questions?

Well browse this thread, there is a way to link your auction with an image.
The point is: If I post my eve-bay auctions here in the forums and create a new thread for it, it doesn't help to stop flooding this forum ... if I create a thread, I don't need an auction site, it's just double work for me.
