There were, like, 2 Englishmen in it.
It was always going to suck due to it being completely toned/tainted so Americans could "get it".
I hate it when Americans are brought in to work on things that are quintiessentially Englsh

I thought that it was alright, but as usual the book reigned supreme. The movie wasn't all that bad when you look back at it...

Yeah, the film is very meh.
Saw it on Friday and thought it was meh.
Friend said he was going to see it and ask me how it was and I made a meh face.
The film is meh.

He doesn't persuade the site foreman to lie down in front of the roller, if that's what you mean. Ford basically fobs off all the workmen with a trolley full of booze.

no no. josh is right! In the film industry there is two main types of "funny" there is British funny and American funny, Now both Can be extremely hilarious, but sometimes some Americans just donÆt understand the British funny, but the British have No such trouble understanding the American funny, also IMHO British funny is normally alot more intelligent and amusing from my point, But IÆm bias as IÆm British
Examples
Lock stock + Snatch = British funny American pie + Roadtrip = American funny
Sorry if you are American and you understood 100% Lock stock and Snatch, but as far as I'm aware most Americans didnÆt.
Also my film examples might not be the best comedy examples ever, but they were just off the top of my head.

A few nights ago Rory's Roger iron rusted, so he has gone to the battle-cruiser to watch the end of a football game. Nobody is watching the custard so he has turned the channel over. A fat man's north opens and he wanders up and turns the Liza over. 'Now **** off and watch it somewhere else.' Rory knows claret is imminent, but he doesn't want to miss the end of the game; so, calm as a coma, he stands and picks up a fire extinguisher and he walks straight past the jam rolls who are ready for action, then he plonks it outside the entrance. He then orders an Aristotle of the most ping pong tiddly in the nuclear sub and switches back to his footer. 'That's ******* it,' says the guy. 'That's ******* what' says Rory. Rory gobs out a mouthful of booze covering fatty; he flicks a flaming match into his bird's nest and the man lit up like a leaking gas pipe. Rory, unfazed, turned back to watch his game. His team won too. Four-nil.
I "get" L,S,&2SB just fine. And bonus points to your post by trying to compare a classic like Two Smoking Barrels to a ****-o-rama teen flick like American Pie and find it a valid comparison of "American Humor" vs. "British Humor".

America doesn't "do" comedy. We do ultra-violence, and product placement.
Haven't seen the movie yet, I'm waiting to find a high quality .torrent of it. ***** the entertainment industry, I'll give them my money when they give me something worth paying for.* But thanks for giving me the heads up. Now I'll be sure to smoke an extra bowl before watching.

My hand made mannequin. i won't let them get you. they'll know you're mine by the fingerprints on your throat. isn't she lovely? isn't she wonderful? like the *****s that we are, swatting flies from the wounds we design. |

I hate eurotrash with a superiority complex.
It's not a superiority complex. The film industry dumbs everything down to appeal to idiots which we are not. He is not saying Americans are dumb he is just saying the film industry does not think we will "get it". The superiority complex lies with the elite of Hollywood that need to be fixed with a crowbar. 0.o It's not you... no wait it is you. |

Well, the movie your sigfile is based off of was written by an American author and produced by an American company.
Just, you know, FYI

It's not a superiority complex at all. They're motivated by profit. They're not producing movies for the sake of art.

Its not that North Americans dont understand British movies, the majority just don't find British humour funny. I say North Americans cause that includes Canadians.
I consider myself kind of lucky in that I was born to British parents and grew up watching imported British humour. A lot of friends/people in Canada just do not laugh when they see something "British".
And I don't think its necessarily mmore intelligent. Its just dry wit, compared to slapstick wit of "NA funny". Both can be intelligent.

Altho I do find british humor alot funnier (Monty Python, Faulty Towers etc) I think it would have been better to compare it to movies like Spies Like us or National Lampoons X-mas Vacation.

Yes Fear and loathing is a funny film, but its not a comedy, it just turned out that what hunter got up to while he was stoned out of his eyeballs was extremely funny, the film is more of a biography, not an intentional comedy film.
but its a great film.

Layer cake is worth a watch, but nothing special (although sienna miller?) is one hot lady. I recommend watching "dead mans shoes" or "sexy beast" for a good few hours of entertainment.

Actually, Pulp Fiction was hilarious.....as American ultra violent comedy goes. The Usual Suspects, Natural Born Killers and Reservoir Dogs also had their moments.
Lock Stock funny all of the way? I guess I am a stupid American.
OTOH, The American version of The Office is pure a$$.
I think a good deal of people get it, but Hollywood will co-op anything that it thinks it can make a buck at, usually mangling it in the process...see Solaris.
The independents will save cinema. If you haven't, see Primer. Done on a $7,000 budget.

Tbh its just a sign of how screwed entertainment industry is. This goes both for movie and music, most of the good stuff is found on independent labels, with an occasional major release.
I don't know but I feel music industry kinda collapsed in early 90's. I have no clue what to listen anymore, since radio stations (at least in sweden) send either commercial poo or some old 70's music. I mean a man cant listen Britney Spears or Hotel California forever...
Industry people are industry people, not artists. They make products and big launches. Think people with fake teeth, plastic boobs, sucked fat and facelifts. These are the people trying to sell "art" to you.
For example, lord of the rings could never be done with US director. It would end up being overviolent crap like Alien vs Predator. It took an indy director from New Zealand of all places to make such awesome movies. --

Just saw the film, and I have to agree, it was 'Meh'...
The problem I see is, when trying to turn a book into a film, first of all the obvious fact of having too much to cram in, BUT... More importantly, when you read a book, it's just words on a page. You, the reader are the one picturing the scene, hearing the voices (is that just me) and seeing the action. You're bringing it to life for yourself and since you know what you think is good, you 'see' it like this.
When someone else does it, they do it how they like it, which is going to differ from how a lot of other people 'see' it...
Personally, I don't think the film comes remotely close to the genius of the book, but it was ok...
