I'm not even british (american) and i hardly found it funny. The depressed robot was funny like the first 5 minutes than he just got freakin annoying. Same with the stupid president of the galaxy. I wanted to jump through the screen and punch them.

I have nothing, I mean absolutely NOTHING against black people... But I did have to suspend a ton of disbelief to swallow a black Ford Prefect
Sadly, Douglas wrote the screenplay, so we really can't put all of the blame on Hwood

Well, awesome books can be made into awesome films... think LOTR. It just takes a good director to do it. This director normally does music video's and commercials... why they gave this film to him to do is anybody's guys.
British Humor: The Black Adder, Jeevs and Wooster, Smith and Jones (want this on DVD), Monty Python etc etc. American Humor: Friends, Seinfeld (exceptional), Jerry Springer, Reality TV (millions of them).
IMO. British humor has more class and wit to it. American humor is unfortunately mostly forced (slapstick).
I have yet to see THG2G, as I am sure to be horribly disappointed.

Well American comedy is determined by the society/media,Americans like things fast and explained simply to them, there are few tv serise and movies that are intellectual and do well. Cheers,Frasier,Family Guy and South Park and the most recent examples of intellectual comedy. tho the last to are very very crude they express a counter point to many of the status quo's in american society and makes you think as opposed to just making you laugh.
Personally I preffer English comedy,I watch the BBC alot and I live in California,Black Adder,Red Dwarf,Monty Python and many others are some of my favorite shows. As far as movies Snatch is the greatest movie since Pulp Fiction. Together they are the two best movies in recent history.
Please stop being a third rate flamer,I am tired of reactivating my account just to kick your ass. |

Ah, british humour....
Monty pythons Meaning of Life. I especially love the last sketch when death visits.
"You Americans just talk and talk and talk, well you're dead now so shut up"
Priceless
Going to have to see the hitchhikers before I lay my judgement on it

I passed judgement before I watched it.
However, I downloaded it today (in just over an hour - love my 2Mbps connection!) and it took less than 20 minutes to decide it was god-awful and my assumptions were correct.
Nothing redeeming about it, to be honest. Acting was stilted, the special effects were a mixed bag, and the most humourous parts were cut.

Thank god you don't speak for all of us Canadians Mahhy, 'cause you don't have a clue. Trailer Park Boys? Men With Brooms? Roadside Gas?. Granted I am not a big fan of the first one, but Men With Brooms and is hysterical. Combination of some slapstick with some really good tongue in cheek. However, these examples are even different from what you describe as "North American"
Humour between the three countries is as diverse as can be imagined. All engrained, taught, socialised by geography, mass culture, stereotypes etc. To say "I" don't get British humour is kind of insulting. To say one country's humour better than another is even more inappropriate. Hell, quit being a dilettante about humour. If it makes you laugh, who cares? I think the thread was more to do about HHGTG. Unfortunately, it appears from what I have read here it has saved me a few dollars from going to the cinema to see it.

Lock Stock was funny. Snatch was the same old ****e laboured rubbish which was supposed to be a true british film. i thought it was a load of *****. Hitchhikers was very funny. but there are obviously so many discrepancies with the book that it is not a true depiction whatsoever...I mean wtf happened between Trillian/Trish and Arthur...the book was a whoooole different story...

Edited by: Khrystoff on 04/05/2005 22:03:45 Edited by: Khrystoff on 04/05/2005 22:00:23 okay, this is so far down it's gona get lost but i can't keep myself from letting loose with this little rant
BOOKS CANNOT be compared to movies . . . they're TWO DIFFERENT GENRES!!!
what's better, oil painting or a charcoal sketch of the same scene?
what's better, a color photograph or a black and white of the same subject?
what's better, a painting or a photograph
what's better, classical music or electronic, Rock or R&B, Jazz or Opera
what's better, computer RPGs or Dungeons and Dragons, FPS or RTS, Single player or Online competition . . .
you can't compare apples and orange, though you can have a preference. They each have strength's and weaknesses, they're both created with different intents and audiences. Of course people think the book is better because the scenes they create in their head while reading are exactly that, created by them. Movies are a look into someone else's mind and an exhibition of someone elses's creation. Books have no constraints in time or budget or requirements for acting ability and casting. Movies can never fully include all the content of a book, and many written jokes/humor cannot be successfully re-created on the screen.
statements like Book>Movie are intellectually irresponsible, they're based on taste, they offer no valid arguments as to why the two absolutely different forms of entertainment should be compared in that way (other than the movie's basis on the written form, which only servs as an inspiration and a starting point)
It's just not as easy as a 1:1 translation between books and film, and no movie has ever claimed that it could be. Movies are recorded re-mixes of a written orchestral score, they cannot help but be influenced by the director's and the actor's own feelings and inspirations. The book is simply words on paper, with the interpretation left as an exercise for the imagination of the reader. I've been arguing this point for years and I pity anyone who cannot comprehend what i am saying.

I gotta say, i really enjoyed the film. I've read the books repeatedly over the years, and while I can't say that the crossover was that brilliant, it was worth it.
You've got to remember that Douglas Adams wrote the screenplay, which apparently had some *very* minor changes in it by the second writer (whoever she was), and it remains faithful to the book in all the ways that count. Granted, there are a few bits in it that stink of commercialisation, but that doesn't matter to me.
The only people i've talked to (in person) that have disliked it, are those who haven't read the books, because there are alot of in-jokes that aren't explained, and bits here and there that simply don't make sense if you haven't read them. (Oh no, not again)
So..... could of been better, but good enough in my books.
Rumors of my clones death are greatly exaggerated. But I am still INACTIVE

I have read the books quite a lot of times and although not a complete fanatic, I still remember most of the books. I watched the film yesterday and immediately started picking things that didn't go according to the book, but soon I realised that there wasn't really any point. I actually started enjoying it after deciding not to compare it with the book. ------

American comedy tends to be a combination of slapstick, and a challenge of the status quo, your examples arnt really fair, since they are geared at teenages with a disposable income, destined for a crappy movie.
Office space is a good example of american funny.

British comedy aint more intelligent it really is mostly dry wit. Comon you cant say Little Britain is "intelligent" but it is bloody funny becus its about your own culture.
American cartoons kickass tho Family Guy, Simpsons (pre 6th season) *please end simpsons just an excuse to get "famous" ppl on*
o and south park.
But British comedy is great becus am british. Red Dwarf was awesome, and hitchikers guide.
What i really hate is what hollywood does to classics to name afew:
Italian Job
U571 - this was a joke and the makers of the film should be ashamed, might aswell of took a **** on the brave british soilders graves, that ACTUALLY stole\broke the enigma code and machine.
and well now Hitch hikers - tho i havnt seen.
That arresting development is funny tho. just started watching that pretty good.

i actually really enjoyed the film...the fact that i caught a late film after spending a significant length of time at the pub prior to it has nothing to do with anything...maybe consider alot of other films based on books....lord of the rings, etc. they miss out alot of important stuff....but hell at least this film was ALOT better than the tv series they...attempted!

Anyone that offers that film as an example of anything other crappyness is an idiot. If you're looking for an example of American comedy, use something like Raising Arizona or The Princess Bride.

Edited by: Aryth on 06/05/2005 01:17:28 The movie was just terrible. The Key to Adams humor was his style. Adams wrote like it was sketch comedy. Small scenes with superb character interaction. Adams changed phrases, and even single words, just to make the dialogue funny. It was the specific style in which he wrote that I looked foward to. However the lines were gutted and the main jokes were taken out.
This is a review of the film which i agree with totally. Its a bit long and it has SPOILERS in it, and it is also rather long, but it is very comprehensive.
Heres a paragraph from the review just to entice you into reading the whole thing:
...this film, I'm very sorry to report, is bad. Really bad. You just won't believe how vastly, staggeringly, jaw-droppingly bad it is. I mean, you might think that The Phantom Menace was a hopelessly misguided attempt to reinvent a much-loved franchise by people who, though well-intentioned, completely failed to understand what made the original popular - but that's just peanuts to the Hitchhiker's movie. Listen.
And so on...
