And the only directive he gave me was. "Not like Star Wars" well. of course. they would sue CCP if you would make them too similar. IP rights are everything for the lucas factory.
Seriously, though, only star wars should sound like star wars. One of the great things that I love about eve is that it isn't like anything else (so far) and should it become star wars, or anything other than eve, that's when i pack it in. and imho, i've enjoyed all the new weapon sounds so far much more than the old ones. the old ones were quite tinny, especially on hybrids. they are a little "dull" but i like that effect - there shouldn't be any sound in space, but since this is actually a submarine game, the dull "thuds" of weapon fire are much more appropriate.
EDIT: on the subject of bass, there is such thing as too much. i get enough "bass" waiting at the traffic lights when some p-plater pulls up beside me and decides that i enjoy his "music" as much as he does. You don't scare me. I've been to Jita. |

I'm not one to post on the forums, and I know this isn't exactly constructive right off the bat, but I felt my revulsion warranted a post. Who can I slap for signing off on the heavy pulse laser bubble noises? I'm a hardcore laser-lover, and I feel like my ships just got defiled. What about this sound communicates a sense of destructive power, Imperial might and glory eager to incinerate the rebellious and unworthy? I hope a potential new player doesn't get a chance to hear the soundscape presented in the Incursion trailer which is, imo, one of the most amazing portrayals of horrific space combat I love to show non-player friends. If they go in expecting anything as cool as that (which should be Team Klang's goal more or less, though it is more Sansha-focused), they will be sorely disappointed.
I'd understand if you try to shoot for a subdued sense of that, too, as that could be awesome. But this... this is just carebear soap bubbles. While the sounds could have been thought a bit rough before, now they're so unintimidating I can't believe a beam sounding like that could make its way through melting wax. Yes, I would gladly revert to the old sounds if this is the only option. I'd encourage Team Klang to take another look at them and try again.
Also, what's up with the sucking-air-through-straw sound with warping now? Where's my awesome old soft-noise-leading-up-to-quiet-suspense-before-sonic-boom? That was a great change! Did people dislike that? Weird. Well at least the mid-warp drone is still there. Keep it.
Off-hand suggestion, but maybe for future sound changes we could have posts of possible sounds to gather impressions from the public? A voting system might be a bit much, but if fans of any particular race could pick out a general consensus of a few sound types they liked vs others, maybe it would work out better. Then again, knowing the internet, maybe not. Worth a shot?
On another note, the removal of the jukebox and addition of atmospheric/location-based music is fantastic. I now keep music on at a low volume because when I logged back in to hear the sounds of nullsec I had this reaction to it. I thought there must've been the Dead Space soundtrack running somewhere for sure. I was so elated I made exclamations aloud about it and started immediately googling about sound updates to Eve as soon as I heard it. The music in Freelancer was one of my favorite things about that game, and I think I can see a little inspiration from there in what they're doing with music in Eve now. I completely approve, and I would love new atmospheric tracks (not full of the junk that was in the old jukebox, but real, actually good tracks like the new nullsec ambience).
I could go into more detail about these things, but I can feel the terribleness oozing out of me as a forum poster, dragging the post further and further off-topic from the point of pulse lasers. Maybe I'll start another one for music. But yeah.
Pulse laser sounds. Ew. :( I might have to stick with missile or drone boats til this is fixed. Last I knew, missiles sounded great. |

Lasers sound AWFUL!!! I got so depressed and angry after hearing how CCP changed them... good thing I found this forum.
Blasters, projectiles, missiles all are an improvement. But beam and pulse lasers?? WTF CCP... they sounds like wet farts with bubbles... SERIOUSLY. I thought it was a joke! The small laser turrets are OK imho... but the mediums and the large sound absolutely ridiculous.
Heavy Pulse laser... Mega Pulse laser... should sound powerful and frightening... not like farting noises i can make by squishing my palms together. Please fix this CCP, I beg you!! I swear I feel like rage quiting cuz of this. |

they are better... but.... Not as good as other games ... so :/
Please think about really revamping the sound system some day. weapon effects and all. From far away a bunch of ships fighting should sound like battle that is far away. It's just... not... there right now http://dl.eve-files.com/media/1206/scimi.jpg |

The new turrets sounds as a whole is underwhelming. I expected loud bangs when shooting artillery cannon, but what I hear instead are some weak ass poofs. Hell i can make more intimidating sounds by microwaving popcorn than I can by shooting 720mm artillery cannons. |

Needs MOAR bass and MOAR punch. Sounds like something from a 60s sci-fi tv show now.
Same with warp/jump sounds; they just don't have the IMPACT they used to. I like the violent explosion sound when you kicked into warp drive, was friggin awesome. Now it's just like "sigh I'm warping" Core Skills - train em up train em up! |

I hardly ever post on these forums but I feel the need for this particular issue as a dedicated Amarr only pilot. I agree with anyone who has said they need more bass. The lasers feel very underwhelming. They don't sound "whole".
Then there's the matter of large pulse giving me seizures (not seriously) but they give me a really bad headache.
I can't speak for the other weapon types. |

Well.... You don't have to be an arse like me to know.... EVE isn't known for its sound effects. Pew pew pew . and whip and the sort.... thats the sort of stuff we were used to. Its time for some new effects.
ALL lasers should sound like this! well.... Maybe not.
BUT it should sound like THIS!
And Projectile cannons should BE LIKE THIS!
Hybrids on the other hand... its a but tough We need to incorporate the charging magnets and the explosive so here is a GOOD ONE!
Missiles are pretty nice , but the explosion ends a bit TOO fast. It should be separated into ignition and then launch . Effects such as this would be nice :D
Of course... the engine superbass humm need working ,and vibrating bass from passing large ships is missing and the roc It is forbidden to kill. Therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets.

Yes, it does. As a matter of fact those of you that play the game mute will not be able to appreciate the time the devs spent working on new weapon sounds.
So far from what I've heard, blasters sound pretty good. Interesting to note that the Ion Blaster Cannon is still my favorite sounding blaster, resembling a similarity to the old Neutron Blaster Cannon which had a very devastating feel to it.
At any rate, I tested out a variety of Pulse Lasers in particular, considering space laz0rz pew pew! I gotta admit I was very unimpressed with the sound, variety and flavors that came from the lasers. The visual effects are muted, the sounds are subdued and they just don't pack that A/V punch that they used to.
I am wondering if anybody agrees with me? CCP, what are your thoughts on the new sounds? Specifically asking people who do play with sound and care about it as a part of the game.
Thanks o/ I'm not impartial since I made the old sounds. I was never happy with the old weapon sound except the projectiles. But we will take a look into this if you are unhappy. Also I'd appreciate more comments on the new weapon sounds so that we can make one big adjustment rather than many small ones. Thank you for your thoughts on the matter. The old 220mm vulcan II sounds were the best of the projectiles, yet they were removed sometime in the past. I'd prefer to be hearing an upgraded version of that old sound than the current projectile noises, which are still very '16 bit' sounding for the most part.
Large and medium rails sound great, but the small rails don't quite have the same 'detail', as it were. I'm not expecting much bass from small weapons, but they could stand to be more like the dual 150mm rails (the best of the mediums).

This is how beam lasers should sound in my opinion.
And i realy realy miss the old Heavy Pulse Laser sounds. I just loved to fly around with my zealot while ratting and have them blast away. Now it just sounds unspectacular.
And this could be an idea for pulse lasers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBDY2kyiw6g (around minute 9 and ongoing, the fighters main guns).
There are a lot of examples for better sounds than what eve currently has. Just watch Babylon 5 or any other decent Sci-Fi show.
While i can understand that CCP wants to create something unique, ppl have certain expectations in regard of weapon sounds. And currently Eve simply doesnt sound right.

I liked the old medium railgun sound. Cheesy maybe, but it had that satisfying "ker-chunk" that made it seem like you just stapled your target with a big fat metal slug from across the grid. -á"The Mittani: Hated By Badposters i'm strangely comfortable with it" -Mittens |

Although, I do appreciate the work CCP has put into designing new turret sounds to enhance our gameplay experience, I feel that they gave the laser turrets the wrong treatment.
Now they sound flat and underwhelming compared to the other weapon systems. |

I remember early in EVE I went with corp mates doing some level 4's, someone brought I dunno what kind of gun but when he fired it was like *KWABANG!*, first time everybody was like wtf , second time it went off everybody wanted to train for it.
Current sounds are unimpressive, my lasors sound like someone carefully folds some paper, afraid of waking up the mice, and the bleeps(salvaging) and bloops(skill trained) and doors opening(open cargo) is getting really annoying. Hi, I'm CCP Arrow, I screwed up the.. ummm... |
