The problem with 0.0 lies with the PvP system. The majority of "carebears" are not as soft as the hardcore PvPers make out. Most would not mind a fair fight. Many would not mind losing their ships in a fair fight. After all, these same PvE players die regularly ratting, mining or in agent missions. But the fight must first be fair. This is where the problem lies.
Getting wtfpwned by a gatecamp is not fair, it is frustrating. No, it is like being held down by ten burly men while they have their way with you. Same with being blobbed, zerged or instaganked.
The problem is when a player is completely helpless in combat. No matter how much you prepare for it, under certain circumstance in the EVE universe, you are dead and there is nothing you can do about it at all. If you come out at the wrong gatecamp, you don't even have a 1% chance of staging a heroic escape by pulling off that perfect combo of moves. No amount of preparation, skill, cunning or character development can help you. You are just dead. That is boring and frustrating and sucks.
There should always be some hope in combat. There should never be a time, even when outnumbered 100 to 1, when escape should be impossible. It should be unlikely, heroic and costly, but not impossible, and it should be clear to the player that there is a way to escape.
Maybe have an "emergency warp" function that instantly warps you 1-10 AU in the direction you are facing, but jettisons your entire cargo hold and drops one random module you have fitted, then deactivates your warp drive for 10 minutes after you come out of warp. You don't die, but it cost you money and time.
In order to get rid of these frustrating combat situations, better methods for corps to hold systems than gatecamping must exist. Maybe if you conquer the starbases in a system, you get knowledge of all ships in the system and can warp to any of them? Maybe have a "control tower" near each stargate which you can conquer to set who can leave through the gate (but anyone can enter through the gate)? Anchorable turrets or scan probes? Mines? Anything but wtfpwn gatecamps that can't be kept up 24/7 anyway.
