Edited by: Lythius Arcturnus on 09/05/2005 23:35:26 I figured instead of making a whining post about how I got blown up in a couple weeks, I would make this post ahead of time to possibly prevent it.
Between me and my brother we have 4 accounts and we want to try mining in 0.0 working together. The other night I was flying around in 0.0 in a shuttle scouting, and I think I found a good spot to mine in. It has crokite in the belts, and a station with a refinery not too many jumps away plus a factory, and as far as I know its not in any alliance territory.
I am building a Dominix for my brother for one of his accounts, and he is going to be the hauler in an itty 4 on his second account.
I am going to be in a scorpion on my first account, and doing the mining in a thorax on my second account.
The dominix will be setup for tanking, the scorpion for max damage, and the thorax with cargo and WCS's. In time we plan on buying a viator to transport the zydrine to empire with using insta's. Starting out it will probably be done in an itty 4.
I am going to make a few safespots in the system we will mine in so we can warp out if bad guys come (non NPC's). I also am working on getting insta's made from empire to the system with the station we will be based at.
Since everyone seems to want more people in 0.0, and seeing as how I have never done anything in 0.0 I need some of you pro's to read the plan and critique it so it doesn't turn into a 5 minute debacle ending in me crying like a girl and us cancelling our subscriptions =P
Whats right with it? Whats wrong with it? What could be changed to make it better?
Thanks ahead of time for any advice :)

Set the Dominix up for Pure Tankage, Find a belt with a cruiser spawn and tank it without killing any of them. Ditch the scorp for a Megathron or Dominix set up for mining. Thorax is fine, Itty Mk V will be useful.
Apart from that Instant bookmarks are your friend, so is local and of course insurance. ---------------------------

So ditch the scorpion for a Dominix and put all mining stuff on it?
Does that mean that my brothers Dominix setup for tanking will be sufficient to handle the NPC spawns?
I was planning on the thorax being the one and only miner in the group.
If I fit a second dominix for mining that kind of takes it out of the picture as far as fighting NPC rats doesnt it?

Err Im not miner but uhh Thorax wont mine uhh.. that much... Id says setup the Dom for tanking put some mining lasers on it and use drones for defence (Fine a Cruiser spawn and kill everything EXCEPT 1 npc) and IMO you should get those other 2 accounts in a mining BS (Mega, Apoc or somthing)

So 3 Dominix, one set up for battle+tanking, the other 2 set up for mining + attack drones for defense, and then the hauler for hauling?

The idea is, no NPCs would be fought at all, as you want to keep your original spawn alive. It only takes one teir 1 battleship to take out just about any spawn in 0.0 anyway; if you don't feel confident, avoid anything with 2 battleships upwards. (Depending on setup, you should be able to do these)
When mining however, it is easiest to just leave the group of cruisers in the belt alive- this way, npcs will not respawn at a later date and kill haulers/mining Thoraxes. As these cruisers would be fighting one dominix into purpetuity, it makes much more sense to set up a second battleship for mining to hugely increase the amount of money you make rather than as a secondary Npcer.
If you are intent on killing spawns, two dominix's worth of heavy drones can handle just about anything anyway.

You shouldn't need any ships set up for battle. Throw on a good armor tank and find a belt that has just a few cruisers. Leave 1 cruiser alive and just mine while he shoots at you. Don't mine in a belt that has interceptors because you don't want to be scrambled if a potential hostile comes into the system.

Additionally use an inty or some Tier 3 frig to move the zyd/mega out, rather than any sort of indy[2]; Vigil works pretty well. Set this frig up to run as fast as possible, and possibly even slap on a WC or 2 to be able to run from lone inty pirates.
I mine with 3 accounts, all setup to mine. 1 Geddon with 7 Miner IIs, 1 Scorp[1] with 4 miner IIs and 2 (or is it 3?) siege launchers, and 1 Mammoth for hauling.
The 2 BS are setup for tanking the spawn with NPC specific hardeners.
Heavy drones on all the ships and the 2 launchers can take out anything I need to, though it can get slighty dicey on the bigger spawns. Keeping 1 cruiser around in an all cruiser spawn isnt a bad idea. I prefer to kill them all personally. Sometimes you'll get 2 or 3 hours of NPC free mining.
[1] I know I know, but this char is only setup to fly Caldari BS and I like the survivability of a BS vs an Osprey in 0.0.
[2] Though im not sure about the newer blockade runners. OTOH, an inty/frig is probably as good for this, and doesnt require near the training time.

Thanks for all the advice.
After reading it all I guess i'll go with 3 dominix and one hauler.
1 Dominix for tanking, and 2 with heavy drones and mining gear.
I was hoping to avoid the 3rd Dominix because my second account I was going to use for mining can't fly a dominix and it will take awhile to train for it, but it sounds like going in anything smaller than a battleship just won't cut it.

Nah, i use mining cruisers in 0.0 all the time, no rpoblem at all as long as a BS takes the ehat from that 'pet' spawn.
And just set up the dominix that's supposed to tank for mining as well, it can do both at a time thanks to its drone defenses. Three domi's worth of drones can deal with any 0.0 spawn short of an officer.
But you focus on the mining itself too much. Your problem wont be tanking the npc's, thats easy and easily explained.
Your problem is going to be dealing with the players. You mention a refinery station. Since you did not mention the area I can't be sure wether you mean an npc or pcs station. The former means you'll be hauling quite far and delaing with lots of agressive players (all areas with npc stations have high player traffic), the latter means you probably can't dock unless you negotiate a deal.
These are going to be the problems, players either hunting you or needing to be negotiated with. _______________________________________________

Its an NPC station. We will be mining late at night, about the same time as I was doing the scouting. While I was scouting the system we are going to mine in and all the systems in between there and station and the stations system were completely empty.
Didn't see one person anywhere, in any of the belts or systems in the hour I was there.

Edited by: Rod Blaine on 10/05/2005 01:42:01 Ok, that told me where you are planning to operate then
NPC statons attract roaming players that cant or dont want to own a conquerable station. In general, you'll always see regions like fountain, venal, stain and curse having relatively more pirate or pvp activity then the regions without npc stations. Because they are perfect bases of operation, as you have noticed yourself.
Not puting you down, but be aware it's probably not going to that empty for long there.
Be preapred by putting giant secure containers at some point near your mining ops in case the stations gets camped or something and you cant access your hanagrs, nor deliver your ore. Get organisation, and if you dont have it yet, get teamspeak. _______________________________________________

Always remember to algin your ship to your safe spot while mining. That way if the tanking goes wrong or a rat comes in local you don't have to mess around turning your ship round.
Keep local split out on the left hand side of the screen separate from anything else on all the accounts. First sign of a bad guy hit warp.

talking about crokite and npc stations I think I can guess where you are. If i'm correct (which I think I am) your biggest worrys won't be the npcs or other players (tho I have seen a few people npcing there in the past), rather getting all these bs etc to/from empire

Anyone have any suggestions about how to outfit the Dominix's to best survive a NPC attack? (thats fits in with the mining/tanking set up they will have)

To fit the domi, use an armor tank. If theres just cruisers that your tanking you can get away with a med rep II + specific hardeners. Fit a survey scanner to protect those crokite roids and the rest of the mids with cap recargers. Make sure you can run you tank forever, leave it running the whole time since you dont want to die if you CTD. Pack a bunch of drones a mix of heavies and lights(just incase a inty trys to kill you) maybe even some mining drones. You should have every bs have the ability to tank the spawn. Leave the spawn going, dont kill any of em since the possibility of having them lock a untanked ship would suck. Use a vigil with nanofibers in the low slots to run your minerals back to empire. It can only be caught by a warp bubble.

Check what types of NPC rat show up in the belt, and look up their main damage types on the object explorer at www.eve-i.com . The damage types they do the most, pack hardeners for those types and the appropriate repairer/booster for the bar you plan to tank (i.e. for NPC rats doing ballistic and explosive, you'd go for a Ballistic Deflection Field (buy at yulai x ded thx), an Explosive Dampening Field, and a Large or XL Shield Booster if you're shield tanking).

THE dominix 0.0 mining setup: 6 miner 2s 1 ore scanner 4 of the best cap rechargers you can afford 1 large armor repairer of the best variety you can afford 4 hardners recommended hardening. for example: for serpentis rats, 2 therm, 2 kinetic. 2 CPR 30 heavy drones.
You'll be able to tank anything up to a single 1mil rat + cruisers indefinately more or less. Try and find cruiser only spawns to tank though - battleships like to switch targets.

Honestly, don't bother. The risks are quite high, and although it's kind of lame (and not sporting at all to the enemy), packing warp core stabilizers and safespotting at the first sign of trouble will be your best bet. It's wussy and lame, but it's also (financially) cheap.

My best advice -Align for warp -Keep local open at ALL times and one eye on it. -Make mining bm's away from the warp in point to buy you time -If this goes according to plan for you (and I hope it does) then never transport more than about 10k zydrine a haul (or whatever you are comfortable with losing) -Fit the BS with warp core stabs for the trip to/from empire, 4 should do. You are not going to win fights, just avoid them. -Make instas to and from empire. Make an insta 200km from the chokepoint gate to see if a bubble is up when exiting with zydrine.
If it's crokite you are mining then I think I know where your headed too. The teritory that way is protected efficiently. I suggest you try to open up a dialogue with inhabitants of the area and ask for permission (at a fee) far safer and you get the locals help rather than hostility.
If you go the ninja route and you get attacked, be polite and you may get away with it. Be a jerk and you will wake up in the cloning station.
Good luck, dont tell others how easy it really is. There may be an exodus
