Edited by: Hopey on 05/09/2005 10:03:21 i love my catalyst - this is my millenium falcon, i got into one as soon as possible and have loved watching what i can do with it change as my skills have grown. right now i have a mish-mash of weapons in there -
High 2 x 75mm gatling rails 2 x Limited light electron blaster 1 x 150mm scout 1 accelerator cannon 1 x 150mm Railgun 1 1 x Regulated light neutron phase cannon 1 x 280mm Howitzer artillery 1
Med 1 x 1mn Afterburner 1 x Small Shield Booster 1
Low 1 x Small armor repairer 1 1 x Overdrive 1 x Power diagnostic system 1
i've tried to mix and match the weapons particularly with reference to range so that i can either target different ships at varying lenghts to maximise damage output, or to make the approach to me as painful as possible. H
The setup above is something i was just testing this evening, i usually have more artillery in there and i swapped out some armour for the overdrive system.

Well, I mine in my Catalyst, this is the rough setup:
High: 3 x EP-S Gaussian I Excavation Pulse 4 x 75mm 'Scout' Accelerator Cannon I
Medium: 10MN Afterburner
Low: 3 x Alpha Hull Mod Expanded Cargo
Drones: 2 x Mining Drone I
Relevant skills are Engineer and Electronics at 4, Mining at 2.
I have one leftover medium slot and one high slot, and about 5 grid and 15 CPU. I normally leave these empty, or sometimes put a cap recharger in the medium slot or possibly another 75mm railgun. With this setup, my Catalyst has a 700 m3 cargo bay.
I've been mining reasonably well with this ship in 0.1, 0.2 space. While I have to avoid some rat combos (essentially cruisers with escorts), I can clear small groups of frigate belt rats with this ship easily. The oversized 10MN cruiser AB might eat up 50 PG, but it gives my ship 730 m/s speed with cargo mods. And with cap recharger and my speed, I can close even with fast rats quickly. Once I close, I let my 5 75mm rails speak for me while I orbit the hapless rats using my max speed.
Once I clear the belt (3-5 minutes tops), I go mine. Mining hermophyte is most lucrative - with mining drones out, it takes me almost just under 6 minutes to fill my cargo space, warp to station, sell ore, and fly back. One load of hermophyte (700 m3) sells for 100k+ ISK reliably. A belt cleared of rats doesn't repop for an hour or so if I keep going into it.
Do the math. Even calculating the overhead of clearing the belt, this is an easy 500,000 ISK per hour. All you need to do is find an out of the way 0.1 or 0.2 system with a good station and a buyer for bulk hermophyte. The initial investment was about 4 million, 3 of which was for the 3 Alpha Hull Cargo Mods. Mine through one 8-hour shift on a weekend and you've paid your investment off. From that point it is all profit.
You can prolly get away with using cheap cargo mods. That'd make the initial investment to be about 1 million ISK, but your hourly income would drop by about 25%.
Yes, I know how strange is it to consistently use a destroyer for mining. Still, hardly anyone ever bothers a Catalyst miner - they either assume you are faking and setting an ambush, or they can't be bothered with such an obvious noob.... :)

since I belt pirate in a Prophecy it won't matter what yer catalyst setup is. But you should be ok versus a hauler or tech I frigate/inty. 5 * XeCL Drilling Beam 2 * Co-Processor I 1 * Nanometrical Co-processor 2 mining drones
I have Electronics 3 atm, so the 2 co-processors + the named one + the 15% bonus from my electornics skill gives me 240 cpu, just enough to power the 5 lasers.
If you have Elec 4 you can use less co-processors.
Edit:
For mining in 0.6 or 0.7 i use 4 lasers + 4 railguns and 2 combat drones.

Hi-Slots:
8x - 125mm Prototype Gauss Railguns
Med-Slots:
1x - 1MN AB II 1x - Named Cap Recharger (or) Tracking Computer
Low-Slots:
1x - Small Armor Repairer II 1x - Magnetic Field Stabilizer II (offsets some or ROF penalty) 1x - Cap Power Relay (-10% Shield Recharge, +20% Cap Recharge)
If enemey gets too close, AB away. You'll have enough cap to run both the AB/Armor Repairer for a bit, but not indefinately. Good enough to run both while retreating, then you'l have to shut one off for a bit.

The hardest i ever did with a Catalyst was a lvl2 mission vs. 3 CRU. The key was to get in close fast and kill the first CRU. I had to warp out to get my armor and capa up. I was able to tank the last one forever.
You need insane high skills to fly a detroyer right. Most of your fittings are guns so weapon upgrade and advance weapon upgrade helps a lot. My capa and repair skills are all at 5. Good gunnery is a must have. Get them all at least to lvl4.
As somebody stated the Catalyst is a fine ship for ganking in high sec. I love it to fit ion blasters, 3x damage mods and a scrambler to blow small frigs out of belts. But beware that makes you a terrorist!

I been playing about a week and heres my setup for my Catalyst
4x 150mm Railguns (for range) 4x 75mm Scout Railguns (for anything that gets closer) 1x Shield Booster I 1x Afterburner I 1x Linear Field Stabilizer I 1x Nanofiber Internal Structure I
Good for killing rats. With Sharpshooter II and Iridium ammo you get a range of like 15km on the big guns and 12km on the small ones. Though thhey hit pretty decently up to about 20km and 15km respectively.

Cant remember my exact details, although i think ive still got mine all equiped still in some station, anyway...
Main think i remember was that i prefered 6x 150mm rails And as someone said earlier its ability to do most if not all lv2 kill missions got nerfed with the missle changes. Im pretty sure i used to easily beat all lv2 missions by simply outranging anything with decent firepower, so its horedously brittle hide didnt get a scratch missles in lv2 missions NEVER used to get further than 20km so all you needed to do was keep youre distance, now youre screwed as those same missles can go 40km and do exactly the same damage as they used to .
Best just to use a crusier for em now and be safe.

As its been stated you can mine in the catalyst. in fact after a couple more tweaks, my pyroxene yield for all miners will be 100-ish/minute. The key is you dont go for the highest individual yield (ie Miner II) but rather go for the best yield/cpu raito. 5 Xecls seems to be the best but other similiar combinations are possible. Im located in the Citadel and have only ever seen 2 Xecls within 13 jumps of me so dont know why its such a rare breed in these parts.

Originally by: Mooneyj Anyone used this ship to mine? i tried but i can only fit 3 mining lazers due to cpu output needs. and i have electronics lvl4. does anyone have any mining setups for this ship.
Yes, before my first cruiser, I used a Catalyst to mine. Honestly.. I only get 4 more units of jaspet with the Cruiser with Miner IIs than I did with my Catalyst setup....
It's a LOT of money, but this is one hardcore miner setup...
FIVE XeCL lasers. 1 Micro Capacitor 1 Capacitor Recharger 3 Nanomechanical CPUs
You'll get 144 units of jaspet a cycle... but the XeCLs are about 3.5-4 million for the set--assuming Miner lvl 4.
Oh yea... be prepared to jet-can... and forget Miner IIs until you get a cruiser. It's impossible to mount enough Miner IIs or Cu Vapors to out mine as many XeCLs as you can place on your destroyer.

Barring getting XeCL's you can get Gaussian I's which I have seen around alot more and are only about 100k. You'll only be able to fit 4 of them, maybe a 5th or 6th if you got wicked skills but still the 4 Gaussian I's are more than powerful enough for their dirt cheap price.

You *can* fit 8 150mm rails on a catalyst. But don't expect to do it without a slew of level 5 skills. Do not put howitzers on a gallente ship, it is a crime.
It might be easier for you to fit 125mm rails for now, they have better tracking (with the bonus they have insane tracking) , slightly shorter range and the rate of fire makes up for alot of the difference in damage.
If you want to go hell for leather, go with 8 ion blasters

Just to kick in my 2 isk. I really love my Caty, and have it setup as such:
Hi: 4x Light Ion Blaster I 1x 125mm 'Scout' I Accelerator Cannon 2x 125mm Carbide Railgun I (All loaded with AM atm, but going to experiment with Throrium in the 125s) 1x Micro Proton Smartbomb I (Just because)
Med: 1MN Afterburner I Cap Recharger I
Low: Small Armor Repairer I 2x Resistance Plating (Kinetic & Thermal for Serps)
= 72.00/72.00 power grid used (Engi 4)
The resistance plating is a left over from experimenting with a all rail setup. Most belt rats 0.5+ die before I take any sheild damage now.

In my opinion, it is. The extra range means it is viable as a rail-platform but can it doesn't make it any worse as a blasterboat

Best use for a catalyst for a skilled pilot.....?
that would be the ultimate quick loot picker upper....
Afterburner....and cap rechargers.... Then Cargo expanders in lows....and as many Tractor beams as you can fit with your skills and left over cpu and grid...
So nice to sit still and pull in up to 8 cans from a 40km diameter at once....thats most missions total loot diameter for the most part....way fast on loot collection....quickly justifies the 1.5mill per tractor beam....plus just cool as hell to watch work.
If they would lower the reqs for tractors itd be the perfect aid ship to help mission runners from new members of corps....cloak....and tractor once everyone is gone....rinse repeat....

Assault Frigates can be destroyed depending upon the archetype. In this, lag is also your friend.
All shield tanked AFs besides Wolf/Jaguar are vulnerable to EM damage from a coercer which will melt them though you will have precious little time. You will still be very much borderline, as with all destroyer fights. The same goes for interceptors. If a thrasher gets two excellent salvoes against a ceptor without a plate, byebye ceptor. A cepter will win if you have to slug it out though. A good cepter pilot will also pick his fights, and plates will generally give him the advantage.
Explosive damage from a thrasher also might work well against armor tanked ships besides the Retribution or Vengeance. Odds are that an armor tanked ship has more comprehensive resistances than a shield tanked frigate. With stacking changes, this is even more likely.
The setups with MAPC aren't that bad. For most pvp, you probably shouldn't even bother fitting any tank because it's not going to make any difference given your huge sig and low agility. 1 plate and the rest dmg/tracking or other support mods will be sufficient. You have to count on just landing enough damage quickly enough. Destroyers also support MWD very well.

Bumping this up because I'd like to see if any RMR changes have improved/affected the way you kit your catalyst.
Right now, I've started a second account to be used for combat and protection for my primary while it does its mining in lower-security space. I'm trying to find the best setup for facing off against the better rat frigs and maybe enough to scare off a pirate once in a while.
Recommendations on the best skill track for destroyer use would also be appreciated. Thanks.

Well I know it's probably not the best, in fact I'm sure of it, but here's what I run on my Catalyst.
4 - 150mm Railguns 1 - Light Ion Blaster I *All weapons charged with Antimatter ammo 1 - Civilian Shield Booster 3 - Basic Co-Processor *For the CPU boost since it's lacking*
...then to facilitate mining at the same time when on my own I add:
1 - Miner II 1 - EP-S Gaussian I Excavation Pulse 1 - ML-3 Amphilotite Mining Probe
It works well enough, not good enough to take on player pirates, or even stronger MPC pirates like Serpentis Chief Patrollers or anything, but the lower end NPC pirates it works well enough. It's a new setup for me, and I'm sure very substandard, but I'm happy for now.
Anyone have any suggestions or changes they think I should make feel free to post.
Thanks!

Micro Aux Power Core, a must on small ships since Power Diag and Reactor Controls give less power per slot.

Lucentia's simple "passive shield tanked" Catalyst for missions and high sec rat hunting
Hi: 2x 150mm Rail 6x 75mm Rail Med: 2x named Medium Shield Extender Low: 3x Power Diagnostic System I (Needs engineering 4 and various skills at 1-3)
You can get over 2000 Shield HP and max shield regen over 15HP/s which gives some nice survivability for a small ship. Disadvantage is slow speed so you need those 150mm rails to kill ships which stay too far and lots of patience when traveling. You can, though, trade survivability for speed by replacing one medium shield extender with an afterburner.
The origins of this setup was to find a way to tank the missile launching (at 40k range) merc frigates in the level 2 mission "Silence the Informant". This worked for me in that particular mission.
Why not armor tank? - The capacitor is inadequate for active armor tanking - Low slots are needed for powergrid upgrades
Why PDS I? - Multipurpose PDS boosts all important attributes simultaneously (shield capacity, shield regen and powergrid) with no drawbacks

if i cant use mwd i just change mwd with a named ab and put a 200mm plat on ...
as my skill increases i'll up the armor ... and my be change the electron blasters to ion if i can fitt it ... and i would like to replace the RCU with a hardneer or somthing more usefull :P

I'm a beginner with most ship skills at level 1 and key skills at level 3 (Nav, Electronics, Engineering, Gunnery, Gallente Frigate). I just got my Cat, here's how I've fitted it:
5 x 125mm Rail Is 3 x 75mm Gauss AB, Cap Recharger Small armor rep, 2 100mm plates
1 drone
It's a cheap fit but effective so far. It's also a lot of fun, even though it only has enough capacitor for about 30 seconds full out. The key is mixed ammo types so that all the 125s and all the 75s can fire at the same range (10500m). Level 1 missions in this thing have been a piece of cake, the alpha strike of all eight guns takes out some of the NPC ships faster than I can target. Time to get Targetting 2 I think!
I do have trouble with L2 missile-intensive missions; a couple of times I've had to warp to safety and let the repper do its work. I've been thinking about swapping a plate for a second repper, but I'm pretty sure I don't have the cap for it.
Next weekend I'm going to try it out with six blasters (Light Electon Is) and a pair of NOS, but I suspect that I'm going to get shredded trying to get to range.
