... "passed away peacefully at 12.25pm this afternoon".
The statement went on: "Over the past few years, Patrick, an inspiration to generations of astronomers, fought his way back from many serious spells of illness and continued to work and write at a great rate, but this time his body was too weak to overcome the infection which set in, a few weeks ago."
Very saddening news. Brian May's tribute is a fitting one: "Patrick is irreplaceable. There will never be another Patrick Moore. But we were lucky enough to get one."
Rest in Peace. "Gypsy Secora" Amun, travelling psy-chic and misfortune-teller. Cross my palm with iskies.

Absolute legend! He made science more cool than any school lesson ever could!
@Graygor - yes it was Games Master. I still remember one of the early episodes when my then-favourite magazine(Mean Machines Sega) lost an easy challenge to a rival magazine(Sonic 2, Chemical Plant Act 2 Speed Run) and the big man mocked my guys in quite an eloquent manner that was quite lost on me at the time. The Gaming MoD - retro to modern, console to MMO, I blog about it if it's a game and I'm interested in it. Yes, I play games other than Eve and I don't care if you think I'm wrong. |

Just saw this on the BBC obituary comments
Quote:Not just a great scientist and a more than decent musician but he wrote one of the funniest books I've ever read "Beaurocrats and How to Annoy Them". Using the pen name R T Fishall, he went on to describe to get your own back on officialdom. A very funny man who will be missed.
Thats on the christmas reading list now.

Never heard of the name or seen the face, so I'm guessing this is a British tragedy. My condolences all the same.

He'll be missed, he introduced entire generations of British children to astronomy, was on the forefront of gaming TV and his research was used by both the Americans & Russians for their respective space programs.
If anyone is interested Wikipedia has quite a substantial write up on him
Always bet on stupid, CCP can't patch stupid. The measure of success in Eve is not monetary worth, it's how effectively you can enforce your will on others. |

Guess the torch will now be passed on directly to Prof. Brian Cox (as far as earned authority goes), who has undoubtedly appealed to the next generation with his easily digestable and fluid presentational skills, though its doubtful his xylophone repertoire is as good. By 'torch' I simply mean conveying potentially baffling concepts in an easily understandable manner, in digestible chunks, to young impressionable minds whether this be via live conferencing, TV, DVD, serialisation, what-have-you.
Prof. Cox does this really well, as Sir Patrick did in his day, minus many of our modern-day gizmos. "Gypsy Secora" Amun, travelling psy-chic and misfortune-teller. Cross my palm with iskies.

Shame.
Odd bloke, but interesting to watch and obviously very passionate about his subject, and able to communicate that passion in a positive way and pull you in to the subject. Also the one guy who could wear a monocle and not look like a complete ****.
He had to go sometime though and to be honest it's surprising he lasted as long as he did. RIP.
Oh, and in before the twenty or so low lives who'll now crawl out of the woodwork and claim he diddled them as kids when he was working at the BBC.

You know, people like you realy **** me off. Here we are lamenting the passing of a man who has done more for the human race then the likes of you can even start dreaming of doing. And you have to drag his name into a sordid area of which there is absolutly nothing to even hint at.
That a man who served his country in WW2, had his wife to be killed by a bomb while she was driving an ambulance, then went on to become one of the greatest educators of a great subject can be automatically dragged into the cess pit of peoples mind shows what sad times we live in.
What is your problem Elias Greyhand? Hoping to get a job as an Australian Radio presenter? Get back under your rock and STFU!

Always wondered whether this item was a hat-tip to Patrick. It'd be nice to think so.
So, CCP -since you've created the premier space-sim, and he was the top man for generations of budding astronomers -how about naming some celestial object of your choice in his honour? You never know -could get you some really positive press.
*fingers crossed*

I want to add James Burke to that list. The BBC cancelling Tomorrows World was a crime against British science.
Todays presenters dont have the raw passion or charisma for the job. Sure Brian Cox is pretty and thats why the BBC plonked him there. But in 10-15 years he probably wont have endured. If he does then well done. But his documentaries feel too dumbed down for me.
Sir Patrick was truly a product of his time. And that time is tragically fading from memory.
God i hope they put up a bloody big statue to him in a prominent point. Post with your brainGäó |

Aye Lovell was also a shame. The giants of the space age are dying out and the greatest shame is their achievements havent been followed up due to political impetus.
If only the Russians had charged off to the moon and Mars. Oh well Elon Musk and Branson have taken up the torch in a fashion.
I still cant believe Patrick Moore did a piano violin duet with Einstein. I mean... its just... wow. Oh to have been in that audience.
