Read the entire Dune series (12 books in total)
Everything by:
Kim Stanley-Robinson Ben Bova Robert A Heinlein Ray Bradbury
The series of Post Jedi starwars books (about 120 of them) are excellent until the new jedi order.
Stargate also rules.

Harry Turtledove does "alternate histories".
1941. Pearl Harbor has just been bombed by the Imperial Navy of Japan. The U.S. is in the war now. England, Germany and Russia have been going at it hammer and tongs for a few years already.
The French surrendered early, as usual.

Seconded, got them all but Omega so far. This guy is equalled only by Stephen Baxter in my opinon. If your new to his books I suggest 'Engines of God' and 'Eternity Road'.

Really enjoyed reading this post. Some great books have been mentioned here. I would recommend Ben Bova's Orion series, Andrea Norton's Queen of the Sun series (space traders, my kind of books ). I can't believe nobody has mentioned Garry Harrison's Deathworld and Stainless steel rat series. Stainless steel rat books are probably the funniest sci fi books that I've ever read :) If you want to go into heavy sci fi, then you should go for Isaac Azimov and Stanislav Lem. I also think you should look into Edgar Burrows' John Carter of Mars books. Very easy to read, but not exactly fleet battles in space. Looking forward to learning about great books that I haven't read from this post.

This guy Richard Morgan http://www.richardkmorgan.co.uk/ has brought out 3 fantastic books over the last 3 years. The latest Woken Furies I just finshed reading and it was fantastic. Apparently, his first Altered Carbon has been optioned by the Matrix producer.
Other sci-fi I like would include Larry Niven - The Mote Around God's Eye (with Jerry Pournelle), Asimov, Iain M Banks, Stephen Baxter and Ursula Le Guin.

The Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons realy is a blast.
Currently my alltime favourite is "Illium" by Dan Simmons. I canŠt wait for the sequel "Olympos" to be released. This book is marvelous. Everyone interested in good Science Fiction needs to read it !

Feersum Endjinn is probably my favourite Banks book, closely followed by Use Of Weapons. The culture ship/mind names in bank's books are superb.

Just being picky......
Book 1 - The Mote in Gods Eye Book 2 - The Moat Around Murcheson's Eye (or The Gripping Hand in the USA)
The Conqueror Trilogy by Zahn also has some nice ship combat, he uses a technique which is similar to Eve for his copperhead fighters, where the pilots are totally immersed in the ship, and use all their different senses (smell/taste/sight/sound) to convey information.
for example, IIRC a smell of almonds meant everything was running perfectly, and burnt cinnamon meant that something had failed. been a while since I read it tho, so I might be slightly innacurate.

Illium is pretty confusing when you start reading it. The plot set around the Ilias mixing SciFi and old hostorical settings is pretty exotic. In addition the three lines followed in the book seem to be far away from each other when you start. The book gains tension and speed fast after the first 200 pages. A lot of surprises wait for the reader as the Illias might now be followed as you might have exspected it . An absolute must read !

Top Picks: Foundation Series- Asimov. Classic. For space sagas, one of the best. The first one alone is my favorite SciFi book.
Snow Crash and Diamond Age- Stephenson. Fascinating.
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is also worth checking out. I really didn't like the first Uplift Book, just seemed to be going for the weirdness factor.

I'm also reading this one, good story.
I read this ages ago. I'm gagging for the sequel/ Somebody mentioned Neal Stephenson, Crash is definately worth a look.
Stephen Baxter is worth a look. Some are a bit long winded but one had a time travel theme that blew my mind with every new page.

can you remind me what each of the three books are about? its been a while since i read them, and have a feeling i only read 2...
other worthy sci-fi stuff... Legacy of Heoret, by Larry Niven. kinda like aliens (in the whole alien planet, deadly lifeform, surprise! point), but a helluva lot more scary and surprising (ie. you dont see the twist coming about 4 pages in.). Feeling this is called Grendels Children or something in its current publication run... Protector, by Larry Niven. too complicated to give a half decent explanation of, but simply: alien comes to earth, we use his technology and skills to fight off the rest of his kind. *much* more complicated than that, but gives you an idea ;)
My current favorites tho are Iain M Banks ones. Excession, Use of Weapons, Against a Dark Background are my favorites, but all are good.

I highly suggest the author David Brin and anyone of his uplift books. It starts out with Sun Diver then really gets interesting with the book Startide rising, and Uplift war.
The whole premise of the universe is that after humans stumble out into the galaxy with our new ships we are discovered by and elder race of beings that have been active members in a multi-galactic society for the last few billion years. Needless to say they consider earthlings to be primitive and backwards, not quite understanding how we even made it into space with out a senior race to guide us. After informing us that the sector of the Galaxy we currently inhabit is on a renewing cycle and that we must vacate the earth in the next 500 hundred years, we set out to find our way. Only to find out that everything is already known in the galaxy and only senior races who have access to the complete library of the progenitors already know this. Nice catch is they don't want others to know this. A ship sets out from earth in search of errors in our cheep copy of the library and imediately finds one that has been buried for Millions of years and the elder races will stop at nothing to insure this information doesn't get out. Talk about space battles 6 different aliances all converging on this one earth vessel that somehow manages to slip away and hide. Side note there is a great scene where this earth ally which is so insigificate just slips in to the battle to see whats going on, and when spotted the main combatants only spare a single missle to distroy it. Luckily for this race their own projectile Missles are guided by a sentient pilot :) Small rodent torpedos for the win!
Anyways I've rambled enough. Read all 6 uplift books you won't regret it!

I can't say I enjoyed this, but then I can't say I endured it past 200 pages so that might be why. For me a book has to be interesting from the beginning and a 200 page warm-up is just tedious and books are supposed to be enjoyable rather as a test of endurance.

Ok where do i start,
love sci fi books got hundereds of them. Most of the really good ones have been mentioned, i am currently reading the Honour Harrington series and so far so good. Before that i read the Peter F. Hamilton book Pandoras Star, which is the first of 2 books although the 2nd book dont come out till october of this year . Imo Peter F Hamilton is me favourite writer as he has so many characters and things going on. Also the Saga of Seven suns was mentioned, this is a series of 7 books though and am seriously annoyed at having to wait months to read the 4th book .
Cant think of anymore really good books off hand, mail me in eve as i have a huge list of sci fi books for u. ----- Trixy says "Keep ur friends close but ur enemies even closer" -----

May I recommend:
"The Praxis" & "The Sundering"
Books I & II in a series that is probably not completed yet. Cannot remember the author right now and the book is not to hand.
Most Eve like reads I have encountered.
Big nod to Arthur C Clarke and Frank Herbert (& son).
Dune series gets my vote for No.1 Bene. |
