Well, Greg Bear's "Eon" is not a sci-fi as in thousands of years in the future, but it's a really good read.
An asteroid approaches earth and stabilizes in orbit, like a second moon. After inspection, it seems to be hollow form the inside. 7 cylindric chambers, much like the inside of babylon 5. Just the last chamber is rather, "odd"....
It goes on forever. Literally.
Meanwhile, as there's a small population on the roid, the 3rd world war is on the brink of breaking out.
Then there's Stephen Baxter's "Ring" (part of a series, haven't read the previous ones though).
It plays far in the future - mankind uses stars themselves as cruise missiles to other galaxies, and an unkown species built a ring out of black holes measuring over 100 million kilometers in diameter.
The story is less transparent, but quite entertaining.

hasent pandoras star been out for... well, several years? youd think thered be a sequal by now...
Was released in 04, with paperback released around January of this year.
Judas Unleashed (the sequel) is due for release in October

thats on my shelf waiting for me to finish altered carbon which is not bad. the shelf is currenty starting to bend under it tho :)
