yesterday, i got attacked, be a crusier pker, while hauling ore i had been mining, back to station, my iteron 5 had a basic shield tank on it, which lasted for a bit.. but in the end, all i managed to do was delay the destruction of my indy for about 30 sec to one minute, all in all, i had 30 seconds after i locked the guy, to think about what to do.. but naturally, my one med beam laser against his sevral heavy beams, was a joke.. i had a proto cloak fitted, so i could hide from hostiles in such situations, but i was really not expecting the guy to attack me, so that was not an option this time..
ever since then, i have been thinking.. is there anything an indy can do in situations like these? if i remove the tank, and put ew on, i will probably not last long enough to use them.. tech 2 indys.. although i have the skills to use them, are way too expensive atm imo :)
any ideas? :)

I say go for the EW and fit a few armour plates and maybe armour hardeners isntead of cargo expanders. The armour modules will help you survive long enough to lock onto the enemy ship and target-jam them, then you're free to warp out as he can't warp scramble you without targetting you. Always keep your ship aligned to something so you can warp there really quickly when there are enemies about. If someone, even a friendly, enters the belt you're hauling ore from, align to something you can warp to.
Another choice would be a passive targetter and EW. If anyone shows up, you can either cloak to get away like you normally do or to avoid the situation that occured this time, lock onto them with the passive targetter so they think they're surprising you. Lock onto everyone who warps into the belt and if someone locks you, target-jam them and escape before they can take you out. They won't be expecting you've already targetted them, they'll think they've surprised you.

EDIT: I know you said you cant afford it yet, but that is the situation they exist for, suggest either find a way to get one, or plan better for the indy you use.
Most pirates dont expect an industrial to fight back, or even be prepared to fight back, so fit EW, and plan to avoid the damage rather than tank it.

Oh and you cant dock when you have engaged in combat, so warp out rather than stick around.

i can easily afford a tech 2 indy.. i just thing the price on them is absurd, i'm waiting untill they reach proper prices... :)
i had like 30 seconds to think.. the problem was that i didnt have anything to use, which kind of annoyed me.. the guy probably was not very experienced.. in pvp training in my corp, even a frigate ganked me easily :)
ew was partially successful... with 2 sensor boosters i had managed to lock a crusier when i was at 50% armor.. luck was against me that time though.. so i still lost..
the main problem with the guy who attacked me was that i was really not expecting him to attack me :)
the cloak is a big lifesaver if it's someone you can expect an attack from.. but it's of course pointless if you get cought by surprise..
mabey if i removed it, ew would be much easyer... hmm.. then i would have an empty high slot though.. and no way to just vanish in case of baddies.. well.. you cant have everything.. :)

Hi, Really no point in removing the cloak. There's really nothing more useful you could stick in it (maybe a small nos or smartbomb), and there's no reason to conserve CPU on an indy, you'll never run out. -Mejare

This is a setup I use on an iteron 5 for combat hauling.
Hi. Improv. Cloak II, Medium Modulated Pulse. Mid. 3 Passive Shield Amps (Your choice of damage types), Medium Shield Extender II, Med C5-L. Low. Whatever you like (5 expanders, 3 nanos + 2 WCS)
With that mid slot setup I've withstood 3 Caracels ganking in high security space. Nothing to see here .... move along. |

Since you're working in low sec space (he was able to attack you) you should be using a bookmark to pick up your ore. Make an extra trip with a frigate to set it up if you need to. That way you warp in on top of your can and don't have to waste time traveling to it. Also, don't use valuable expanders in low sec space. Settle for expander 1's and make another trip if you need to. Finally buy decent insurance.
If you're in an indy and somebody wants to kill you, you're screwed. All you can do is minimize your time in the belt and minimize your loss if you do get killed and minimize his gain.

T2 Passive targeters can be supprisingly effective. If they are in scramble range then you can bypass the targeting time and lock instantly, then hit them with em and warp out. If they are outside 20km then you can just warp out anyway (generally speaking). This at leasts gives you a sporting chance of getting away.
Another good module is a sheild booster. They only last as long as your cap does, but becasue they operate so fast they absorb a lot of damage.

I'm setting up a Badger MkII, no idea what I'm doing but getting there...
How do the 'Invulnerability Shields' with 25% resistance to each of the damage type compair with more dedicated units producing 50% on an individual damage type, please? -I'm planning on using 2 of the fields to produce 50% resistance to all damage types while only using 2 MID slots -there is no stacking penalty detailed on the info for those fields.
Cheers in advance...

There stacking penalty on harnders comes from the fact they only effect the 'remaining'. So 2 50% hardeners gives you 75%. (50%, and 50% of the remaining, which is effectively 25%).
Otherwise, you could run 4 invulnerability fields, and have 100% to all.

Well the iteron has low slots and cpu in heaps.
Why not sacrifice an expander or two and put a couple of armour hardners in. If you are hauling with instas (you should be) then you shouldn't have a problem making 2-3 extra trips.
If your only issue is surviving, get 2 wcs, you should be able to warp before you die if a cruiser attacks you.

Or go full EW and fit more mods to targetting time and range. Indies have tons of CPU anc cargo and not much else. You may get at least one chance with a multispec or a turret disruptor.
Never forget psych warfare either. If you can trick them into thinking they have walked into a trap without seeming as an obvious ploy, some will warp off, some may even surrender. Most wouldn't be criminals if they were smart now would they?

Auto-targetter could be extremely useful. Try that, and a load of ECM's (all race-specific (but different races) to save cap).

thanks for the replies !
Sorry IÆm a noob :P What areà Instas ? Wcs ?
I was planning on something like the following, though it may not be specialised enough. It seems best from what I read to go for one role ûEW or TANK? not a bit of both.
MID Shield Eextender(MID) + Reactor Control to Boost Power(LOW) 1mw MicroWD(MID) û I hope this is better than 10Mw AfterB I am using!
2x Invulnerability Fields(MID)
Suppressed Targeter(MID) Multi Spec Jammer(MID)
2x Extended Cargo(LOW)
Spare HIGH ? ideas?
OR should I ditch this plan and go for more specialised with race specific gear? -Do I understand correctly that each of the races uses a certain type of weapon and scanning so I counter it with specific jammers and shields?
Thanks once again...

You can fit jammers on an Indy and jam your enemiees, but that's not really foolproof anymore ;)

It's pretty much foolproof if you fit 5 jammers on your Badger mk2

Can you Jam multiple targets or only the one?-no good against a fleet of attackers unless you have lots!
Also I just discovered the Suppressive Targeter only last for 5 secs, how is this useful!? -Are Passive any better?
I'm onyl getting 190 out of this Badger with a 10MN AB, will a 1MN MWD do any better?

Not asure why you guys would want a passive targeter. That's normally the weapon used against you(if it's ever used at all). Auto targeter's take 5 secs or whatever, but then you have a lock, and don't need to use them again. You CAN jam multiple opponents, but there is less chance of jamming than if you concentrated them on a single ship

You dont want a passive targeter... I can't think of a more pointless module for this situation! However you do want multispectrals. As is correctly pointed out, you don't know what type of ship is comming up and so you need to cover all races, but 4 multispectrals gives a far better chance of sucess than 1 correct racial jammer and 3 wrong ones. Also as most ships that will be out alone trying to gank indies will be ceptors or cruisers a multispectral jammer will still be pretty likely to succeed. As for saving cap, it's a non issue. The point of these setups is to force open a window that you can escape in, one burst has to be enough - if your jammers fail then waiting 20 seconds to try again isn't normally an option!
The key to this setup is however the auto targetter (the tech 2 flavour is way better becasue of its 20km effect radius) as this means you can aquire the enemy ship pretty much as fast as he aquires you. Then you trust in your jammers to kill his lock and warp at a random distance to a random moon (chosen from the right click menu to minimise your chances of being followed). You can't save an indy for certain (its an INDY!!) but you can be proactive and greatly increase your odds against the average pirate.

why not sacrifice cargo expanders for warp stab's? As long as they can't jam you, with a 400mm armour plate you should be able to get out before they have time to kill you. If you're in low sec space i'd much prefer to do an extra journey than risk being disrupted and helpless.

Instas are when you go past your can inline with the station and make a bm 15km from your can directly in line with wherever your indy is coming from be it gate or station. Then make one in line from your belt to the station by going 8-11km past the station and hit alt to have the icons(station and belt or planet that the belt is by if further away) make sure they are on top of each other then just use the insta to haul. You will find that without needing to slowboat 15km to the can and station your hauling times will go down considerably and it only takes a few minutes to make your 2 instas with a shuttle.
wcs = warp core stabs _ _ How many pilots does it take to wire a Flux Capacitor? 3, 1 to wire it and 2 to talk about how the old one was better. |

One other helpful module when you're hauling: a scout.
Okay, it's not so much a "module" as another person, but still ... sending someone ahead a jump or two in a shuttle or covert ops frig to check the path is a good idea. If you hit a heavy gate camp, absolutely none of the other suggestions posted here will save you. You want to be somewhere else.

I thought a passive / suppressed targeters meant that you could target a ship and it not be known to the other ship, that way having the drop by reducing / removing tracking times. It does this, but it only seems to last 5 seconds!? is this right? how is this useful for any ship!
Micro Warp Drives any good on Indies?
Cheers for the pointers Val Amon...

Now I understand it a bit better! so as not to mislead anyone else, the Supressive targetter does indeed allow a target lock without alerting the other ship. The little symbol appears next to the targetted ship only for a few seconds, but the lock remains 'suppressed' ...
my bad.
