Hello guys I've been trying to make a cute character but I'm a bit stuck right now. So I'm coming here to ask you guys for help!
Heres my progress so far: http://i1307.photobucket.com/albums/s596/hyperxviper/20121227025644_zps7f7855fa.jpg
She should be a smart and pretty girl from a royal family who abandoned her lifestyle to be a capsulier, and one of her distinctive traits is she has a scar on her right temple from an attack by a ferocious predator. |

Why did you have to post that?
Actually, the OP looks a bit like Cher, but only a bit, and it's not that bad. People tend to exaggerate here.
Just give the neck a little more thickness or tone down on the lips. Either will improve it, but not both. Add some body to the face with a cheek pull, and maybe lower the cheekbones a little if you decide to go with the thicker neck rather than the thinner lips. Draw left/right on the top and bottom lips to change their pout. It's a bit much as it is, and you can pull down on the top or up on the bottom to reduce their shape a bit, or from side perspective, push them in or out individually.
Just mould and sculpt.
edit: also pull the brow down above the nose a little to lose the puppy look, and maybe push the sides of the brow out to increase depth. The bottom lip is too big and out of proportion to the top, the nose is fine but I notice it has an arch to it, and it could use a little meat on the end. Far to pointy and incongruous as it is.
Hope that helps. zubzubzubzubzubzubzubzub |

Cuter. Now you just need to widen the chin a bit, bring that brow down in the middle or lift it outside, grab and pull the nostrils out just a bit and maybe add a little thickness to the neck, but not much.
..on second thought, leave the brows alone, they're probably fine now. zubzubzubzubzubzubzubzub |

'Cute' is going to be difficult to agree on, since everyone has a different set of features they prefer. I do a lot of professional character art and have some suggestions... but please feel free to ignore them all :)
- Firstly, she looks distinctly worried. You need to made sure the inside points on the eyebrows aren't the highest point. Bring down and seperate the inner portions of the eyebrow.
- Second, move the eyebrwos apart a little. You can actually see the worry-wrinkles in her brow - that's not very appealing (imo).
- Next, her nasal bridge is too strong - a characteristic that usually comes with age. If you soften the bridge some, she'll look younger and stereotypically 'cuter'.
- The tip of her nose seems a bit low, another characteristic that appears with age. If you raise the tip up a little, she'll look younger.
- Have her engage the viewer by looking at us, as opposed to looking at some off-camera interest. It's more interesting and engaging if she's looking at us, as if the viewer is the most interesting subject at the moment. It's all about subtle.
- Her teeth are not attractive. I'd recommend closing her mouth a bit more.
- If possible, I'd recommend getting rid of the lines between her cheeks and mouth. They imply more worry/age.
Just a few ideas. Good luck! :) |

Narrowing the jaw and cheekbones will compensate for the narrowness of the neck. Also, whatever you did to her eyes took away all the cute. Might want to back track the history a bit.

Thanks!!!!!!!!! Couldnt have done it without you guys help!
Acac Sunflyier wrote:I could help!
First step, you need to make softer features. women don't have much testosterone. So, we have smaller and finer features. Secondly, I know how guys are about boobs and butts, but try to be realistic about body proportions (don't go FFF but go for some lift and separate).
Secondly, know that your complexion should determine your make up color. If she's going to be fair skin uses a lighter touch than a darker skinned character. Also, our eye color determines a lot about the eye shadow, which in turn determines blush. If it's hazel, brown, or green, go with an earth color. If her eyes are blue, go with pinks and blues.
Also pick good hair colors. See how mine has contrasting high lights with the natural character? Try going as natural as possible (i.e. avoid pink and blue hairs).
Finally, the portrait. Pick a color scheme. I've gone very black and white. Ask a photographer how to make a good picture. I took a class and understood aspects of lighting and positioning. So, I had a little advantage.
Shoot I didnt see this until now! I'll read it and try to apply your tips! Thanks!

Agreed - the lastest version is headed in the right direction. Open her eyes up a little so she doesn't look sleepy, and I think you're getting close. Though she's not 'cute' in my mind (mouth is too broad and nose too strong for my tastes), she's looking very real now. |

- good lighting -- no straight on angles - no hard colours - nothing is maxed out

I lol'd.
OP, you'd be best off finding an irl artist friend to sit at your computer and sculpt the character in the UI.
there are ratios and rules to follow when sculpting a face, just like if you were drawing one.
I'm not going into tutorials here, I do enough of that as a mod on an art site................... http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Buckingham Buckingham is my Vanilla Sky ||-áVincent Athena, I made something for you: http://i.imgur.com/hrxcc.jpg |

Everyone could argue what 'cute' looks like. But the fact is that certain kind of elements in female's face (and why not male's as well) make it more attractive. The key is 'the golden ratio'. A face that is shaped according to that ratio almost naturally looks attractive and something we describe as 'beautiful'. It's the perfectionism of nature. You could take a look at the picture in this article about a girl who has symmetrical and according to the article the perfect face.
It's also true that most people find female faces that look a little 'childish' more attractive than those that are boldly shaped and strong. So if you are going for a cute character, all her features should be soft and tender, like a child's face. Her face could a bit round, even. Achura is the race you can't go much wrong with. They have pretty cute facial features ready at the start. Probably the most challenging race is True Amarrians, it's a bit harder to make 'a cute girl' with that setup. |

The fastest way to make a character ugly is to mess up on the eyes/nose/mouth/chin ratio. Very slight changes, small mouse movements, can result in sudden ugly.
You should:
- pick an even light source that doesn't cause half the face to be shadowed
- pick a hair style that doesn't cover the forehead; you want to see the face ratios while you're working on them
- don't get stuck looking at the character while you work; zoom in and out, turn the face sideways, so you don't get used to the character's face. Familiar people look prettier than they are; someone can be really ugly or disfigured; you get used to their look and they don't seem so bad anymore. You want to avoid this when you make your character.
- Try to get your character to stare right back at you. This also helps you see if they have the wrong dimensions.
Once you've got a face that you think is ok, and not deformed, you can then pick a different hair style, apply the makeup, choose an expression via the eyebrows (eyebrows up = worried, eyebrows together = angry, etc), and complement that expression with the corners of the mouth (up = smiling, down = angry), and choose your final lighting, where you're staring at, etc.
The Death Cell character is pretty; nothing special about her face, but she's got the dimensions exactly right, and her expression matches, from the eyebrows to her stare to her mouth. By contrast, your original character had a mouth that was too big and too low, and eyebrows that indicated she was terrified.

Thanks. I was trying to work with what I was given after the conversion from the old avatars to the new Incarna ones. I wasn't having much luck, so I decided to base mine (very loosly) on Kristen Kreuk from Smallville. I wasn't able to get her smile right and the hair style options are woefully limited, so I ended up just going with what I have.

I think Acac Sunflyer mentioned it earlier, but something to keep in mind as you sculpt is that women tend to have a lighter jawbone and chin than men do. Testosterone causes heavier bone growth during early development. That means that women usually have slightly narrower faces, and their chins do not project as much as a man's might.
The character creator itself generates some reasonably good starting shapes. The suggestion to use the randomizer until it was close to what you like was a good one (for the face). From their only make slight modifications, being mindful of the notions above. Also, attempting to create a resemblance to a real human face can also help, but realize that the CC tends to handle stereotypes better than specifics. it wasn't your attempts that made it worse. it was the replies of a few of the posters that made me feel that way. i find it a little annoying to read people bashing others for nothing more than differences of opinion.

Oh okay sorry! I misunderstood your post
My friend said similar so I "filled out" the face. I think it looks really good now, probably my best attempt! Check it out! http://i1305.photobucket.com/albums/s559/pryox/20121227215956_zps027483d4.jpg

nah, troll is when the fail is intentional. It's hard to know exactly what is appealing about a person's face. and then there's no way of knowing what is off and what isn't.
OP did you soften that jawline as much as possible http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Buckingham Buckingham is my Vanilla Sky ||-áVincent Athena, I made something for you: http://i.imgur.com/hrxcc.jpg |

Well... I tred to but then I messed up and I couldnt get the look back so I decided to base it off my friend's OC. Shes supposed to have a narrower face but i tried to keep in mind your advice about softening up the features and I think I managed it while making it look like his artwork. http://i1305.photobucket.com/albums/s559/pryox/20121227230946_zps290159ac.jpg Shes supposed to be a genius with an IQ of 200 but a traumatic past so shes slightly psycho but she hides it usually

aesthetically it is just softer looking.
this is something for the eyes, when you are doing portrait. eye expressions are very subtle but humans convey and interpret a lot through the eyes.
just some things to keep in mind: http://i.imgur.com/aLGVY.jpg
because you're going for "cute" I tried to give tips regarding a seductive "bedroom eyes" look.
it might also help to bring the lower eyelids up *slightly*, especially if you're smiling at all. any type of smile will bring the cheeks up and make the outside corner of the eyes squint slightly.
audrina patridge has skill: bedroom eyes V. she also has a soft jawline. I think she's one of the prettiest women evar http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Buckingham Buckingham is my Vanilla Sky ||-áVincent Athena, I made something for you: http://i.imgur.com/hrxcc.jpg |

Dear poster above me: the only way to make big jugs work is together with a huge (you know what profaniy should fill those brackets). But, most important: whatever the individual person prefers! Apparently a lot of women prefer guyslooking 'comfy', I don't get that. Guys look better when well defined, but just my opinion. |

After having looked at the progression from the very first picture, this is very good in comparison. Get the right lighting, angles, and expression and you'll be fine.
I often find that characters I make that don't look particular good on their own look much better when angled appropriately with the right background.
For instance, I have a Caldari character who has a long face when viewed normally. Angled up and to the right, though, with shadows and background coloring that shortens her face a bit and she looks downright pretty.
Just don't worry about the hair/makeup and such. Once you get a bone structure you like, everything else is readily changeable. I actually scrapped a character I made once 'cause she only looked good with one specific makeup and hairstyle.
Just mess around with everything. I've found on a few of my characters that I liked them better after having modified their hair/makeup choices post creation.
