Not sure why but I have navigated straight through at least 4 large planets and 2 space stations. Is CCP thinking about ever simulating gravitational pull and/or damage from collisions with ships, asteroids, or planets?

God i hope not, thatd suck, youd have to navigate around evertyhing, autopilot would be near useless etc, and eve is a game, not a space simulator =)

Well it kind of ruins any possibility of immersion. If it isn't a space simulator then why bother depicting 3D objects at all? Instead we can break out our board game and instant messenger instead!

lol.. Someone's a little naive in the world of gaming! You could play a boardgame, but then you wouldn't be looking at sparkling graphics, be doing all the hundreds of complex things involving thousands of other players, or have all the different opportunities! So your ship will go through a planet or a station, so what? Gameplay is only half of Eve.

Doh, don't you know anything about trans-dimensional hyper-speed space travel ?
In warp you enter an "out of phase" state that allows passage through solid objects.

Uhm, this is a MMORPG in space, not a space simulator. ;)

Who even indicated it was a space simulation in the first place?
But why stop at dodging planets. Lets grovel for meteors ripping through our space ships and destroying our cargo containers. And lets go for a limited supply of oxygen in our ships so our pilots can die more horrible deaths.
Lets go all the way.
Actually I have the heart of an Exploiter and a PKer---I keep them on my desk in a jar. |

First of all, this is a new citizen thread. Not sure why all of you hotshots open up like I am a pirate closing in on you. Second, who is to say why realism cannot be part of a "Space RPG/strategy game" as CCP calls it? All I am asking is that I at least bounce off of visual objects instead of passing through them like they are ghosts. I know this is a challenge but can anyone answer my initial question without flying off the handle? "Is CCP thinking about ever simulating gravitational pull and/or damage from collisions with ships, asteroids, or planets?"
Thanks!

Natalia.
I think I can say that the short answer is 'no'.
The planets are there simply for a visual background effect, and to give at least a slight reason for space stations being where they are.
I suspect that to start including such ideas as gravetational effect would probably mean an almost total re-write of the game engine.
Not that I am saying that ideas such as that are without merit, but the main draw for people playing Eve is the quick combat and trading aspect.
I personaly would like to see a more detailed game but I suspect that we will have to wait until somebody else brings out an alternative to Eve, and then it will only happen if there is enough demand for it, which I suspect will not be the case.

A re-write is probably correct or at least to the jump gate routines. If the stations where solid I would be dead ten times over. I can't count how many times I have appeared 3 inches from the hull of Ytori storage. Makes it nice for docking though I don't have to wait.

Thanks. That makes sense. Maybe in another 5 years when programming becomes easier and faster.

I agree with Natalia, why not..Freelancer (Mirosoft ;) ) made it so why not EVE.

Because the freelancer engine is not doing half of what the EVE engine is. I bought and played Freelenacer (until I had gotten the biggest and the bestest after only 2 weeks playing it...and got bored). The stations look very nice...compared to game out 2 years ago. Eve stations are to scale with super-star detroyers. It takes a long time to fly from one end to the other, and they lose very little detail even when viewed up close. Freelancer stations are like 100 feet across with crapulent low res testures and probably 1/15th the number of polygons. (Dont get me wrong...Freelancer was a fun game. But it was no EVE). That being said, I agree that collision detection would greatly add to the enjoyment of the game. Yes, I know this is a MMOG. But there is a reason the graphics look realistic as opposed to cartoony. Immersion DOES count. Sorry. But collision detection on this scale would be horribly taxing on the engine, so it aint gonna happen. At least not for a few years. The rest of EVE is so cool though I can find a way to live without collision detection in space...

Hey, I like Xane's explanation about going 'out of phase'. Far out, man.

I dont mind warping though things. I mean you are warping. I hate the docking and flying though the station to the docking area. This is just turdy. Either fly around or dock any where near the staion, but not though.

Sounds like you might want to try Jumpgate. Which really sux when you hit a black asteroid at top speed. Eve is so much more pleasurable to me. Your eyes do not have to be glued to the screen and worry about the twitch factor.

Actually I would like the stations a little more able to pass through. I keep getting hung up on a few of them while trying to leave... and been stuck against a few astroids too, not being able to navigate while "in warp" trying to get around them.
