Not "we", you. I and a whole generation started from MUD text games where you knew in advance it'd take years before you could even call youself "average experienced". Then the early MMOs, they were not a joke either. I also play another 2003 game ATM where people plan their things in months or years like in EvE.
Of course some guy who would roll from some cheesy welfare game of these days will find it hard to adapt to EvE.
Actually, the proper mindset to tackle EvE is to WANT to create your own content, your own long term path, your own long term challenges to win. Getting in late just puts you somewhere in the sandbox, you have just to find how that "somewhere" can be used right now. Can't produce Titans at day 1? Well, make a good income with ammo. Can't fly a Titan yet? Fly a Rifter and go tackle big stuff.

No, there are others that do. PvE born / based MMOs usually don't, but some PvP games do make people have an enjoyable and fulfilling PvP experience since day 1. I even put some of my early days on other MMOs up on Youtube.

Good to know. GÇ£If you're not willing to fight for what you have in GëívGëí you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.GÇ¥

The simple fact of the matter is that there is no gap that needs to be compensated for because it's built into the game and because in the vast majority of the cases, there is no gap to be bridged to begin with.

Being as the games about 10 years old now, how long will it be before more trials than not end in uninstalls?
and most importantly, is that the time eve will start dying? I wonder about it alot, what kind of system could be implemented to "close the gap" for new players without alienating the existing player base? don't know why i waste my brain power trying to solve a problem that won't make ME any money.. but I guess its cause I like the game, and would like it to be around and still populated in 5 or 6 years (should I still be playing) and the players that are starting out today or next week or next year would be the ones around at that time. its hard to enjoy a cutthroat business when your competitor has a chainsaw and all you've got is a plastic spork, is CCP ever gonna hand these lads at least a butterknife?
first you got to concider what are the things that need to "close the gap" on... isk per hour? skill points? game general and mechanic knowledge?
The sad thing about this game is that in "most" cases this has to do with getting to 0.0 where there is no rental agreement and there is a decent stability. The problem is that to get that you need to be part of some major coalition where there are things like ship replacement programs. Otherise your progress will always be very slow compared to the progress of someone in a major coalition or other parts of space. Another place to progress fast it will be in a wormhole but not any wormhole entity will do. It probably will have to be the top end ones.
The other way around this ofcource is to do like the Honey Botting Coalition and run bots like crazy. CCP says its ilegal to do boting, yet they give you a 3 strike ban policy which is no more than a slap in the hand or they wont do nothing unless they catch you "hands on" |

Forum Rules wrote:
4. Be respectful of others at all times.
The purpose of the forum is to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas. Occasionally, there will be conflicts that arise when people voice opinions. Be courteous when disagreeing with others. It is possible to disagree without being insulting.
5. Ranting is prohibited.
A rant is a long-winded, redundant post, often filled with angry, non-constructive comments. A free exchange of ideas is essential to building a strong sense of community and helpful in the development of the game, but rants are disruptive and incite flaming and trolling. Please post your thoughts in a concise, clear manner and avoid going off on rambling tangents.
6. Personal attacks are prohibited.
Commonly known as flaming, personal attacks are posts that are designed to personally berate or insult another. Text of this nature is not beneficial to the community spirit and will not be tolerated. Corporation, faction and alliance members and other players are cautioned to avoid allowing GÇ£in characterGÇ¥ disputes from becoming "out of character" personal attacks. The game is designed for role-playing and/or portraying a role and it is sometimes easy for tempers to flare when the lines between the virtual world and the real world are crossed. Please keep in-game disputes in the game and off the forum unless it is clearly a mutual, in-character exchange.
7. Trolling is prohibited.
Trolling is the word used to describe a post that is deliberately designed for the purpose of angering and insulting the players. Posts of this nature are disruptive and do not contribute to the sense of community we want for our forums.

I fully understand the OP, and will try to share my personal thoughts as a newish player (who took 4 tries before the game stuck).
1). I fully researched and understood the newbie skill hurdle prior to playing... and as such once the tutorials were done i just set skills and logged off for the first month or two.
2) FW saved the game for me, especially recently. I originally ran tackle and trained into a drake with corps that do null sec roams etc, but this was epically boring and fights were hard to find in a reasonable amount of time, and often ended with us getting face melted. Playing in novice complex where only t1 frigs can go makes me happy and keeps me with profitable pvp oriented things to do all day while my skills mature.
3) Even with small ship combat being fun, not having skills blows. People do so much more range and dps etc its frustrating for a solo player. Less of an issue on roams. I accept that being new means working skills.. however...
4) Not being able to grind your character really, really sucks. EVE is perfect for a busy person who just wants to PvP for an hour each day and log. Its annoying for people like me who use EVE to pass the time that no matter how hard i try or how much i play, I can NOT advance my character any faster. It instils a feeling of "well why bother playing? I should just set skills for the next 9 months and THEN maybe I can play like I want to."
5). Again a neat mechanic saves the day for me... the character bazaar. It is far more time efficient for me to grind ISK and then buy a nicer toon than to wait for my skills to tick upwards... so thats my current plan. If it wasnt for this, id probably lose interest and not play. Saving isk for 3 months is better than waiting 2 years for the same skills.
6) I am not a normal gamer. I am a power gamer from even back in the ULtima Online days, who will do anything to win. I run 3 accounts right now because hey, I can make 3x the isk. I doubt many new players have the ambition or experience with hardcore PvP games that I do (Ive played them all).
7) I wouldnt ever recommend EVE to a friend. Not because I dislike EVE, but i just dont know anyone who would stick with it, they dont have the patience or autism required to play the spreadsheets. |
