Well infact I've only been in 1 or 2 PvP fights before this venture from what I remember and that was when I played for a couple of weeks early last year, building skills and learning fittings etc, but I just didn't have the time to put into the game at that point so I stopped playing. The other day I just had an itch to try EVE out again, thus here I am.
So I logged back on again, slowly remembered where I left off and got to grips with the interface again, reading guides again as I plodded along. Done a bit of mining so I could make Rifters with the blueprint I had, so of course I don't have to worry about buying them when I lose them, which is inevitable. Done some PvE in my cruiser, not fun for me personally, very boring infact lol.
So there I was dabbling around, sorting skills out, planning for the future, when I just looked at my Rifter and thought "What the heck, let's go and get into a fight". Warped into the local 0.4 sector and scanned with the directional scanner, I think it was a "Procurer" that showed up, ( I think that's the name, I knew it was a mining ship though ). I think I physically smiled at that point and I began I warping around the asteroid belts, it wasn't long before I found him, the adrenaline already started kicking in.
I wasn't close enough to tackle him so I whacked my afterburners on and closed the distance hoping he is too occupied elsewhere to notice me, which he didn't, atleast until it was too late. Got him locked, scrambled his warp, webbed him, started draining his energy and began blasting into his hull as I orbited around him. Bam, he released 5 drones that quickly began eating my shields, the damage they were doing to me was quite alot and I instantly thought "Damn, this could be game over already". ( my Rifter is also only using all tech 1 gear ).
By this point I could feel myself physically shaking, though I did my best to keep my mind clear, I switched on my small armour repairer, switched to my Drones tab and began shooting down his drones 1 by 1, lucky for me they could not do enough damage to surpass my armour repairing, stayed near full armour the whole time.
It dawned on me he had not fired anything at me from his ship, I realised now his drones were gone he was defenseless, so I began blasting him apart. I watched his shields drop and as they got real low something came into my mind, something I had been reading in the previous days from various guides "Offer ransom fee!". So, looking at the market value of his ship showed around 8 mil in the region, with his fittings and cargo I'd just assume toward 10 mil, maybe even more. I opened a private chat with him and simply demanded "5 mil and I'll let you go", I felt 5mil was a very fair offer, for all I know I could have let him off lightly.
First of all he reponds with "How do I know you will?" I say "You don't, but I'm going to blow you up if you don't send me 5mil". He doesn't respond so quickly, as my Rifter is slowly eating through his ship and is approaching Hull and I am beginning to think his ship is just going to be debris shortly. He then types "2.5 mil now and 2.5mil after you let me warp out" Heh, no way I thought, I'm not about to let my first victim fool me, "No, 5mil now and I'll leave you alone for a month, or your ship is going to be blown apart", I did think to myself after the fight "a month? maybe too long" but he is after all only one fish in a sea of plenty, plus also my first piracy victim!. ( I am going to abide by my own rules btw, I may be pirating right now but I'm still a gentleman and I'll leave him alone for a month lol )
DING, my wallet recieved 5mil, instantly I stopped shooting him before I blew him to pieces, disengaged all my offensive modules and watched him fly away. As I warped to the sun to hide for a few minutes I was excited, I felt overjoyed that I had just actually successfully solo pirated and earned myself a tidy and humble sum of 5mil in a very short amount of time, doing something I had alot of fun doing, not a massive earner, though 5mil is better than a kick in the teeth.
But you know what, I couldn't have done it without the countless guides I had read, all the information experienced players had put online for guys like me to learn from, my fittings, my tactics, my reactions, my first ever piracy attempt and also my first success, all down to the guys that take their own time to write these guides. I would like to say a BIG thank you to all of the people that do take time out of their own day to help other players learn the game, I had a massive amount of fun and adrenaline for the first time in a long time of gaming and especially MMORPGs and it wouldn't have happened without these guys.
If you even made it this far into my massive amount of text, I wish you a good day, good luck and see you in space perhaps :). |

Very nice read, and that's exactly how I started pirating, this makes me want to just sell up and move to lowsec with a few prints for frigates etc, and just go roaming for victims again. |

I would just like to point out... you didn't pirate. You almost kidnapped, threatened with violence and then ransomed.
Pirates would take the money and then blow up their victims and lewt their wrecks regardless.
We think of e-honor as more of a guideline.... and not an actual code that has to be followed or even enforced. Eve is about Capital ships, WiS, Boobs, PI and Isk! |

Pirates have ransomed people for hundreds of years and still do today, even Julius Caesar himself was captured by pirates when he was a young man, they ransomed him. To quote "Piracy is typically an act of robbery or criminal violence at sea.", or in this case space instead of sea, but it is piracy nonetheless to attack a ship and rob it, regardless of if anyone was murdered or not or whether you were honourable to your word or not.
I also was only honourable to my word because that's just the type of guy that I am and it's a smart tactic, I didn't think it was a code or anything. Plus if I catch him again next month I'll have him pay another ransom, if I had blew his ship up after he payed the ransom he would (hopefully for his sake) not be stupid enough to pay a ransom to me again. |

It's that mentality that has pretty much killed pirating in Eve.

You did everything right! You didn't panic, you shot down his drones, you kept him locked down, you handled ransom correctly (I sometimes wish that I was an actual pirate rather than a marauding force of vengeance so I could do this, just for the fun of it).

Yeah I was lucky to find this guy, especially as it took me only 5 minutes to do so, but I assure you it did happen. After checking out his recent losses he seems to be a regular at this 0.4 system, guess I'll see him in a month. |
