Edited by: Mned Graydroggen on 25/06/2005 21:41:43 As you all have heard/read by now we have a new patch comming. With this post I'd like to share some tips to those who have never had the pleasure of a patchday before.
Apart from us getting new toys from our Glorious DEV's, patchday basicaly suks. We will probebly have immense lag.( Imagine everybody who gets online starting to search market for the new stuff at the same time.) Servers usualy get unstable resulting in reboots. And a bug or two may have moved in with the patch.
So here is some advise for patchday.
Make sure you have a skill training set that will take you some days beyond patchday. Chances are that server instability/reboots will get you past any training finish time you might have on patchday.
Dont plan anything big in general for yourself or corp on patchday. Best advise I can think of is make sure you are parked away from any central/node system and just hang out with your mates.
Dont go out hunting those npc's/complexes you used to do solo. Lag and server crashes can prove to be fatal. In addition this patch changes spawns, so if you do want to go , go with an overkill the first time if your not prepared to lose your ship.
Dont start spamming the boards with wtfccpincompetentfoolsiwantmymoneybackrightnow. Believe me, no one on these boards realy cares and I am certain any stress you might experience will be dwarved by the stress the Dev's are experiencing when the game goes fubar. Everything will get fixed. Just be patient and give our Devs some slack. They love the game just as much as any of us and will feel any pain double. There's no way a few hundred users on sisi can mimic the ongoing of the multi k user base on tranquility.
Thats all I wanted to say. We did have some smooth patches in the past and I wish you Devs good luck on this one. I'm looking forward to this great looking expansion you have cooked up for us.

I would add that if you can, Download the patch from one of the mirrors or bit-torrent ... If everyone did this instead of autopatching, the Server would be a lot less laggy :)

Wouldn't it make more sense to release even one day early to try and reduce the impact ?

I guess that when they release the patch, they release it as soon as possible to please us players. They could in theory leave it until the tuesday after to update the server but we'd rather endure one or two bad patch day/s than wait another whole week to play with the new stuff ;) -------------- The Eve Diplomacy Table

50% of the people would patch then one day to early and would start to whine around in the forums that they can't play atm cause ther client is incompatible with hte server.

No, I meant release it a day early for download only, not for use til the next day, and then hundreds of people less will be trying to download it on patch day.

There's no way to make it so that you could download it and not install it, people would just install it anyway, and as it's been correctly pointed out, they then couldn't connect to the server anymore.
On patch day, I set my alarm early and get it downloaded first thing, I've never had a problem with that.
Problem is, there are lost of players who don't read the forums, and may not even know that a patch is available until they log in and it starts automatically downloading.

Simple date verification could be used.
Of course, CCP cant reallly protect people from their own stupidity so they might as well release for the smarter ones among us

Date verification wouldn't stop people with an incorrect system date, people in a massively different timezone, and if the Patch gets put back at the last minute, as can now happen - it would mean everyone would have to download it again.

Why not let the eve system send out a an eve mail to everyone (no, not all at once, just a trickle) some before it happens?

Or do something like Steam where the patch program checks in with a central server for an OK to patch signal.

Bah, I *ALWAYS* log on immediatly when patched servers are up and go crazy on market. Last time when advanced learning skills hit the servers, I was one of the lucky bastards to get copies and sold 'em for quite abit of profit. What? Why should we do this? I would think that CCP would endevaour to provide the appropriate bandwicth and download optiosn to its paying customers so we would not need some third-party download option (which I must say does not work reliably for me).
If auto-patch is sucjh a problem for CCP, whay is it an option?

Hmm... CCP do endeavour to bring good patching solutions to us, the paying customers, which is why they provide mirrors and bit-torrents in the first place! On hot days, such as patch days, even the most powerful servers, such as the EVE servers, can run into a coughing choke. Remember, 7000 lazy people can make any server commit suicide! Use the mirrors! It's good for you.
One other possible solution is to make a torrent built-in with EVE, such as the patching system Blizzard is working with. Their patching program absolutely sucks and regulary blue-screens my computer, so don't look at THAT, but the downloading program is good - you do a simultaneous download of the patch from multiple users who are playing the game. This is instead of the server! (unless the client in question has a ****ty connection that doesn't support downloading from multiple places at once, where downloading from server is still a better option.) -- If TC causes you discomfort that you feel is unwarranted or may be outside TC's current contract - contact me, please. |

But you would think that if this was a big problem for CCP, their autopatch process should have just a little bit of intelligence added to it, say a queue, with options to get them from a 3rd party download source with whom they contract to host their patches.
It wouldn't take much programming effort to implement this or even get download.com or other massive Internet download sources to mirror their patches.

I am merely saying that there are remedies for the auto-patch bottleneck and that CCP should spend just a little time investigating them. I am for the most part a CCP fanboy. But the patch day download garbage can be improved, and as long as I've played this game it has not been, other than posts about a bit torrent option which does not work for some behind firewalls.

Why don't you use the bittorrent protocol for patch transmission (autopatch), or multiply the patch servers? I got myself a huge bandwith (read simetric 1Mbps) and I don't bother if my bandwith is used to help CCP folk's to unload their servers. _______________________ Forums DSU |

I guess that programmer resources have been prioritised to provide fixes and features to the game that will get used 23/7, every day for the forseeable future, rather than provide a solution to a problem that occurs for one day every couple of months, and on a day when the server is unlikely to be 100% reliable anyway.

Mails sent out with what starter said (in perhaps more politically correct manner ) would be enough. As Matt said, no point in wasting resources for what occurs few times a year.
Only addition that realy helped would be autopatcher popping up window saying main server seems to be very busy and then list mirrors. ----- 42 |

Edited by: Eraza on 27/06/2005 10:31:50 why dosnt ccp just do like games, like WoW have done.. make the autopatch use bittorrent :)
and yeah, patch day is usually bad.. usually has problems, lag, and often a hotfix patch following closely..
not to mention npcs have sometimes gone fubar.. i remember one patch that accidentally turned npcs up in difficulty so much that you would think you were fighing player ships, not npcs.. so, on patch day, dont use anything you are not perpared to loose, DONT TRUST PRICES ON NEW STUFF(very importnant if you dont want to get ripped off), i myself just wait a few days, or a week, before buying any of the new stuff.. it has saved me hundreds of millions :)
and last but not least, prepare for epic lag.. --- return the mines! http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=190321&page=1 |

World of Warcraft use the BitTorrent (or similar) protocol in their autopatcher.
I remember seeing a friend averaging 0.5K/sec download speed on a university network because he couldn't upload due to their firewall restrictions.
Everything has a downside.

The WoW patching systems was one of the things I absolutely loathed. Hated it with a passion.
Simply put, I don't like any thing playing around with my connection.
That and it's utter depressing how slow it is. That and I've always ended up uploading far more raw data than I ever download. Literally spent about 4-6 hours with a 512k broadband connection just to get the tiniest of patches. All the while, it's busy uploading the tiny fragments I do have and killing my connection and computer's ability to do anything else.
No thanks, I pay them to provide the service, not to make me a proxy.

Originally by: Kuolematon Didn't you know that yesterday US. Supreme Court said that all P2P protocols and programs are bad, m'Kay and anyone using those softwares can and WILL be sued.
Read the ruling more closely, that's not what it said at all. The Betamax ruling is actually largely intact, it just now has a caveat about intent on the part of the tech developer. So that if it can be shown that the developer had designed with an intent to facilitate infringement, then they are open to secondary liability. The case has been passed back to a lower court to determine if intent can be proven in that specific case. Another important caveat in the judgement is that failing to design out any infringing uses is not enough to be found guilty. So having something that has infringing uses isn't enough, they have to show that it's support for infringing uses is intentional and deliberate, not just a by-product of supporting legitimate uses.
This case changes nothing for users of the software. As a user you can still only be sued for infringing uses of it, any legitimate use you find is perfectly ok. The case was entirely about what responsibility the designers of the technology should take for the acts of people using it. What the ruling basically say is that if they designed the software with the intent of it being used for infringing purposes, then the company is liable. With some P2P programs, it's far from clear the P2P companies can win that argument. With bittorrent at least, I'm confident they can - the simple fact WoW and others use it for distributing their files demonstrates a significant non-infringing use which it was designed to be put to. Blizzard certainly couldn't be sued for it's implementation in WoW - what they've done with it has no infringing uses and obvious non-infringing application and intent.

Excellent suggestion. I suggest that the links to the mirrors be put at the top center of each page on the website for that week. If it was easy to find more people would use it.
Failing that, put them at the top center of the home page.
