Edited by: Caroline 888 on 29/06/2005 11:49:45 I set up a real killer close range (blaster) set up on my Deimos and wish to use drones to deter Inties from tackling me - atm i can only control 8 at a time
Is 8 light drones enough to effectively make an inty turn tail and run ??

well, if its medium and inty is crow or something that orbots you at 17km with 20km scrambler and MWD, then you in trouble..

not really, u just tank him (as he will use kin and u got base 85% kin resist) while mwding to a gate/station. If he tries to web u, web him back and cook him with ya blasters.
Light drones are atrocious. Even 15 rom an ishtar/domi is easily tankable by a ceptor. Mediums are the only way to go

I Just want to not be so vulnerable to inty tackles - as we all know once locked down the inty can call for backup and pow ! your dead
or in this case im dead - may just have to hold some long range charges ?

Unfortunately no. Light drones do ridiculously low damage, 8 (or even 15) of them will not save you. Light drones need a bit of a boos
You could always fit a multispectral jammer in one of the mids. Interceptor sensor strengths aren't that hot, you should be able to jam them a large percentage of the time. The bonus with this is that it also works against other ship types.
If they come within 10km (or even 12km) you have more options, but against someone orbiting at 15km at 4km/sec you don't have all that much in a Deimos. You could of course fit small rails, but then you'd be throwing away the Deimos damage bonus, might as well use a Thorax.
...so I'd suggest some form of EW. Sensor damps would be nice, but you'd really need two of them to work against all interceptors, and you don't have the mids for that. Try a multispectral (named or t2).

Well if the inty is set up for close range and you have a webber then u will have no problem hitting him with medium ions. I normally carry a small amount of iron ammo in my hold which just about allows u to reach 15km right at the end of the falloff so u might get a lucky shot with em. A nos can help but again theres the range limit.

This is actually something I've been wondering and will have to test one of these days. With good drone skills (drone interfacing & heavy drones at least 4), how many drones and what type are needed to force a typical non-tanking inty to disengage?
If anyone has tested this, please share.

Yeah, if they come within 12km you nosfe then (med t2 nosfe), within 10km they also get webbed. After that they start having serious problems, typical inty setups are very tightly balanced on cap, a med nosfe can seriously mess them up.
The problems start when they orbit at 13km+ and use a 20km scrambler on you (typical for Crow, Crusader, Malediction setups, and some others too).

Taking into account that the inty setups for 20k takling are so tight are we sure that 8 light drones just may force the inty pilot to disengage ?

Well, they're almost always tight (or "balanced" more accurately) on cap, so hitting that with a nosfe hurts them a lot. The trouble with light drones is that they do crappy damage, and while they will probably force a disengage *at some point*, they can probably tank things for quite a while. But as I said earlier, I'm not sure about how many light drones would be "enough", it could be that 8 lights would do the trick with good drone skills. Or not.
Light drone damage is pathetic, but then again so is interceptor shield & armor.

cepter setups that operate in a 13-19km orbit with MWD and use a 20km scram will be tight on cap and tanking ability, i think if your light drones can catch up to the cepter and do some dmg, the cepter will have to leave eventuly. ------------------ If at first you dont succeed, dont try skydiving. |

Fit a target painter. They're more flexible against different sized targets.
I'm not sure that target painting will help your drones dps any. Perhaps yes, perhaps no.

12,5km, almost the same as t2 nosfe. So no help there. Hmph.
Maxine: target painter is a good idea in general, but a bit useless with blasters. With the current painter + mwd bug in place it will probably help your drones *right now*, but as soon as that's fixed I doubt it will have any effect - light drone gun resolution is already very good. And the bug has already been fixed on the test server.
If you can spare a medslot, I still say a multispectral ECM would be the way to go, especially since you can use that against anything, even NPCs. And/or work on your drone interfacing and hope 9-10 light drones are enough. They might well be, partially for psychological reasons -- seeing a huge swarm of drones coming your way at 3-4km/sec is enough to make many inty pilots run first, think second :).

What the man said. That one inty isn't a problem. His 10 buddies warping towards you while you're sitting there scrambled are.

ok, first of all, what ya all talking about with target painters and 1 ecm mod in med... thats crazy talk.
The ship in question has 3 medium slots... u fit a web, a dis and a MWD... its standard and needed.

True enough... you could get away with not fitting a web if you're going against big targets - but in that case you've even more vulnerable to inties. Leaving out a scrambler is possible, but in that case you need a tackler with you... in which case that tackler can also provide anti-inty support. Ok, scratch the medslot idea.
Looks like the options are either
a) use light drones and hope they are enough (train drone skills as much as you can in this case)
b) take a buddy along
