Originally by: Jean'Marie Balestre Edited by: Jean''Marie Balestre on 08/07/2005 02:35:55 what makes me feel old?
being a mature student, and the fact I was in art college the first time, when the rest of the students in my year were in primary school...
and having lecturers in university younger than I am. (well that and the fact that one of them's a cute redhead who's the almost identical to a girl I slept with a few years ago.... )
Friends who I remember having had their 3rd child "not long ago". and then realising the child is now a teenager.
when they have 80's nights on the radio, and people going on about how "retro and Cool" it is, when I'm sitting mumbling about remembering all the music the first time around.
When I have to get up in ther morning, and the crunching sounds from my neck, back, knees and other joints.
the fact I think that getting drunk and wasted on recreational pharmeceuticals is a bad idea nowadays. (the look I got in uni when I did'nt think, and commented "ah, but the <drug name edited> are just not as fun as it was back in 1989" made me feel old, certainly...)
when I realise I say things like "I remember when I was young"
the fact that my MP3 playlist is playing Visage, and I remember when the record was released on 7" single.... cos I bought it.
when I describe Eve as being a 21st Century "Elite" and people ask "what's elite?"
Leet Speak. Gah. Makes me want to bludgeon the "lol uR th3 Suxxorz" brats around the back of the head and kill them for the murder of the english language. (and not kill 'em ingame....)
The fact I can't understand how to answer a mobile phone. or make it work in general.
or understand why people think they're essential. we did'nt need 'em before, after all.
Goths. When I was young, we used to wear leather, rubber and fishnet, and made out clothes ourselves, thought that the Sisters and 'Neph were great, and that Sigue Sigue Sputnik were going to change music. Now, they listen to Slipknot and wear spiked bracelets they buy in any old shop for ú3.99, and call themselves Goths. I remember the punk wars, and we went through it all, and they've never even heard of Bauhaus. bah.
yes, I definately feel old. (particularly when I see minigoths.)
on the plus side, being a mature student means I'm getting to sleep with 19-year olds again ...
All that you have said rings soo very true with me. The only minor differences are:
I'm not a mature student (I'm an ex para)
My younger sister is having her third child this year.
My neck, back and knees crunch from the moment I wake up to the moment I hobble back to bed at night.
And rather than just sleeping with 19 year old girls, I married an 18 year old one (now 20).
"scotty, i need more power to warp out."
"i canna give yer any more captain, the dilithium crystal was nerfed this morning.. yer just gonna have ta face it, we've been ganked." |

Realising that my musical taste and all my best memories are firmly rooted in the years 1989 - 1994 then trying to talk to all these kids at work about Alice In Chains or early Nine Inch Nails and realising that they had only just started primary school

Almost weeping because the data on them is now corrupt. And there is no chance that i'll ever be able to play Pooyan 36 hours long without intteruption because i'm better then the game can ever get and there is no pause button. (C64 4tw)

I live in Miami Beach, but across Biscayne Bay, in MIAMI, it's "friends from middle school getting pregnant...while they're STILL IN middle school." And I'm NOT joking or exaggerating either. That one doesn't work around here.

Soo tru! Ya know what!? They have a (last time i went anyway) a C64 and a ZX81 in the Science museum in London!!!! Now that made me feel old!!! All the C64 needed was an Action Replay catridge
Did you ever see the old 40gig disks that were in AS/400's? They were HUGE! I even saw one IBM enginer take one of ours out of its rack and drop it ... yes DROP IT .... from waste hight and *BAM* it starts working again! Don't get disks with stuck arms like that any more!
And speaking of "racer" my lil' Yamaha R1-z (i like to leave out the -z when talking to people) has just died and taken its final blow. Not as old as yours (only 1994) but she was a bootiful lil' 2-stroke commuter.
We are both way to old ... Darwin 4tw

while i was groing up (around 10) i thougt adults were realy growned up and stuff.
Now that im mature, got a career (if such a thing exsists in the IT industry) i realise that my fellow adults are much more imature than i was at 12.

You would know that you were not, in fact, old, if you were quick-thinking enough to respond, "That's okay, there's room for two in that seat. Just a little stacking, that's all that's necessary." And you would know that you were, in fact, young, if she took you up on the offer.

Does it? I have a hard time thinking of the place I go every morning as a "career". But maybe that's just cuz I'm on contract and I actually will be planning to leave within a few months... ___________________________________________ ^^^***---All things serve the Beam---***^^^ GDBT is recruiting! |

Showing off my grandkids. Worrying about my cholestrol. Calculating how many years left til retirement. Going on cruise vacations. Going to or watching golf tourneys on TV. Explaining to others who Jack Benny was. Remembering when certain TV programs were announced, "In living color" like that was special. Being 50 years old.
