After Exedus I had a problem reading agent mission details because the text was all screwed up but I struggled on. So I helped others on their missions, then I realised that I could copy and paste the text to chat to read it. YAY I could do missions again.
Now I'm screwed.

THANK YOU CCP for removing one of the best games ever from my hard drive.
Goodbye!

That link no longer works, however if you're experiencing font corruption, then 99% of the time it is an issue with your setup. Seeing as no-one else has a problem with the text, it is very likely your machine at fault.

I'd do anything I could before I decided to stop playing EVE or consider buying a new computer.

Well id really love CCP to explain why they had to change fonts? Whats the difference about languages on old font? Now its bugged, its big, its not sharp enough. My eyes hurt from 4-5 mins of chat reading! -=-

Seeing as everybody else can read it just fine it wouldn't be fair to call it CCP's fault now would it?
Anyhow : The old font did not support azian, russian,... fonts so thats why.
People have stated that its the graphical drivers that make this problem happen so you might want to give older drivers or other drivers a choise (theres not just 1 driver for nvidia and 1 for radeon you know and they are not always the best)
Goodluck in finding the correct driver. I'm using 6.14 nforce drivers for my mainboard (Ultra infinity from DFI) and 7.1.8.9 graphical driver from nvidia for my Geforce FX 5900.

Yup, the old font wasn't unicode and wouldn't support a lot of international characters properly or indeed at all. As CCP want to get big in Russia and the East, this is a pretty big problem ...

Edited by: cristari on 05/07/2005 23:24:22 Just to get things streight, I may have been a little mellow dramatic.
I don't want to leave this game but was there any real need to nerf the text even for Exedus? What exactly was wrong it?
My experiance of Eve has been severly restricted. After Exedus I could not read agent missin info or Bio's. Now I find it difficult to read anything?
Or is this part of the plan to get people to work together, I have to get people on TS to tell me what is being said in Corp, gang and alliance?
Now it's is really broken.
If it ain't broke . . . .
Doh!! you guy's are way to fast for me!
So I guess my answer is to run out and buy a ú900 PC so that I can play this game. Thats fair!!

On the other hand, I don't think it's just a font issue that's stopping some people reading it.
For some reason, CCP have added in bold/italic/underline support to corp chat, thus grossly overcomplicating it by pulling in parts of what I'm assuming are the ingame browser.
I've always had issues with that not displaying correctly, character bios, item descriptions, and even agent conversation windows too. Unfortunately, now that the same is used for chat, I'm unable to read chat too, which if you ask me, is untollerable. I can live without the rest, but not without being able to talk to my corpies.
If there are ANY suggestions on how to correct this, please, PLEASE let us know. I'm not the only one having problems it would seem, and I really would prefer to NOT suspend my account until it can be corrected or my laptop is repaired (my only other machine that could run eve and with some luck *might* not have this issue).
I appreciate all CCP is doing for us, and I understand they're more than likely working their behinds off after the patch, but this really is a serious problem.

like ti has been said a few times to you already. They did it to create better support for non english speaking players. I support such a move and at the same time am sorry that you have issues becuase of it.

I support a move to help non-english players, but that only involves changing the text encoding method, NOT bringing in formatting such as bold/italic/underline, which is superfluous and brings in the complexity that has caused this issue. At least, that's my theory.
Frankly, I don't see any way changing to unicode on it's own would cause this problem, the issue is more than likely caused by the 'frills'.

I as well have this issue with the font corruption...I stand behind CCP making more bi-lingual based, but like Freak said, im guessing its got something to do with the "frills" they added. It is not just one person anymore who has this problem, there seems to be more and more coming out from the woodwork with the same issue. Im up for any ideas and suggestions without having to go out and buy a new pc when it worked fine yesterday, lol.

They have to do something! Its not the simple agent mission description now, it's the whole communication system!!! I can't believe they've done nothing since Exodus release.

Well I can read the new font, so I am not as bad off as you guys, I just don't like it, it is a lot harder to read than the old one.
I can understand they needed to change the font to one that supported the full uni-code character set, but they should let you choose the font. If you don't use/need the extended character set you can stick with the old one, or one you like better.
I can also do without the underline/bold/italic frills, but that is probably not the problem.
I was hoping for an 'easy fix' and someone would just post, all you have to do is change the line in this init file to read 'times-new-roman', or whatever the old one was.
-- And juts a pet peeve, don't ever suggest re-installing your OS to fix something a patch introduced UNLESS you have good knowledge that that will fix the problem. And if that turns out to be the case something is pretty messed up with the patch if it requires an os reinstall. Suggesting you re-install the OS just makes people 'mad' (not my first choice of words).

I can read the new font but it is ugly and chunky to say the least. I also don't like how all the text displays below peoples pictures now in chat. Ended up turning off character pics in order to get the windows to display properly.
Bottom line - The new fonts suck, and the new UI voice sucks too. I want the old font and computer voice back...

apparently you can change the font encoding in prefs.ini with this line:
fontEncoding=iso8858_2
I do not think it's the change in font encoding at all though, as just changing that shouldn't make any significant difference, the addition of formatting like bold, underline, and italic on the other hand requires a rich text display engine, which IS a significant change.
As I've said before, I've had this problem for a long time in the ingame browser, character bios, item descriptions, and agent conversations, but now that they've applied the same buggy mechanism to the chat too, the game is not really playable anymore, as I don't even get blurred text, I get a white block (assuming it's a variant manifestation of the same problem others are having that appears as scrambled text).

Looks like there are 2 Font issues. The on with corrupted display like the original poster had in mind and the highly smoothed Font in chat window wich is realy difficult to read on a TFT/LCD (at least on my notebook and on the 17" TFT also).
Item description, Overview are still quiet nice, but that chat font gives me a headache.
I also have noticed that the UI takes up more and more space. Like the fact that the formatting of speakers icon and his name is bottom aligned, so it consumes way more (vertical) space in the conversation. Keeping up with a convo of several people results in plenty of scrolling. Disabling the pictures and switching to the smallest font introduce the 'sunken font' problem. Maximising chat in vertical way leaves me with not very much of EVE then a chat window and a overview (or chat overlapping the ship-modules). :-/ EVE is centered arround player interaction, the convos should be overviewable. There should be a small, realy good readable font at least for the chat.

Like the one on this web page even... The font really is sub par and a step back. It goes beyond being just cosmetic, being able to easily read what is going on is core/key to the game.

I am using a 19" LCD display without cleartype enabled and the new fonts are crystal clear. Actually an improvement over the previous fonts. I am using windows xp with support for asian languages so this may be the reason my fonts improved. In the past the fonts always sucked on my machines. Bunny Jumper CO C.E.O.
