I wrote a little handbook on basic PvP strategy to try and help the eve community get out of it's old blobbing ways. It turns out that many of the tips and ideas contained in it are already being used. I've told fellow directors and CEOs about them for sometime now and when m3g4 melted so to say, I decided to let the community have a good taste of everything I was thinking. I spent a good amount of time on it, but not enough to make it perfect so excuse some of the areas where I don't really explain some things I say. I tried not to put so much detail into it as to give away some trade corp secrets of some of the corps I've been in in the past. So...
Keep in mind I've started this from the ashes of the old M0o PvP document made by vegeta and some other guy. I didn't agree with alot of what was in it, mainly cause so much has changed so I was inspired to create something that would be sortof like an eve-general PvP wiki. I've saved it in a rich text format so that you get some basic formatting options and anyone can edit it with any common text editor. If you do change it however, it would be nice if you left urls at the bottom of the work it was based on as to keep it archivable as you'll see explained in the document....
Enjoy!

Personal I cant take any document with swearing and THIS IS STUPID in caps type comments however there is some very good info in places.

Great guide.
Santiago Cortes can we get just a main "Guide" sticky topic with all the guide links in there. Either directing to the original topic or to a file like this one. So we wont have a big cluster of stickys. Just an idea =)

W3rd! Better yet what about a whole topic devoted to "guides". If this discussion would fit better somewhere else I vote it be moved. *-------------------------* This is not a good sig. |

You have done this without consulting me or Paddyman, the creators of the original guide. You do know that copying our guide and adding to it is illegal?
I am currently in the (long) process of bringing the original guide up to date, this is not well seen.

If this is indeed true that you wrote the original guide and his work is a derivative of that guide, then yes. He has not even left any credits to you guys. Plus I must say that this guide is not good on a few good reasons.
The text is not structured, there's a lot of use of "..." a little here and there which makes the text look unprofessional. The content may be good, but please make it easier to read.

Don't be so arrogent, it makes you sound like a kid. And quit trying to make this a flame thread. I meant to imply that I was inspired by your work. I didn't take or copy ANYTHING from it. I didn't quote statistics from it. That's like saying every author who decidesto write about apes has to contact every author before him who wrote about apes, regardless of whether or not he's even read thier works... and quote them.
Plus, I'm pretty sure you didn't take the spend time or money to copyright your work. So legally I could have copied the entire thing and taken all the credit for it. Then, the only thing I would have lost would have been integrity.
Lastly, I really doubt you're deticated enough to update the your guide. It took be about 4 hours to write this thing. If you're having that much trouble adapting the original text I suggest you just start over. *-------------------------* This is not a good sig. |

First, no it's not a derivative work. The key word in my post is "inspired". In fact the last time I read that guide was about a week after it was posted. My memory isn't good enough to steal from something I read that long ago. Second, I'm sorry you're having trouble reading it. You mention how it should look professional, and I agree, but I'm afraid your out of luck. I didn't spend enough time on it to make it look and read like a book. However, I designed it so that it could be changed or re-written in any way. That was the ultimate goal. They don't have wikis on eve's website, although I think they should, so I decided to save it in a format that would be pretty easy to edit, and would alow more text than the forums. So, if it really bothers you or if you'd like to add something, feel free to change it. The only thing I asked is that you leave a URL back to this work, or any work you might have based it on. Not because it's illegal not to, but simply to have some kind of living archive. Programmers do it with programs like CVS, wiki writers do it (which is essentially what the idea here is), that's all I ask of any potiental writer/changer. *-------------------------* This is not a good sig. |

There is no need to formally apply for copyright anywhere - you earn copyright to everything you write the moment you write it. Thus there are absolutly no costs concerned with aquireing copyright, even if money might be an issue when defending said right...
As a side note, the (c) symbol doesn't have any value either anymore; it is more of "warning sign" that someone claims copyright to a work - It is however not requierd for copyright to exist.
That beeing said, you have the right to quote another person, but when doing so you should specify the part beeing quoted and state who you are quoting.
And as to where the border goes between infringing on someone elses copyright, or just beeing inspierd by their work, that's something that usually has to be decided in court...

wouldn't you have to prove that you wrote yours first? granted it may have been published on the net after yours was published but does that establish that anything was taken from yours. if anything it seems he might be able to also argue that you might have taken from his guide if the dates the works were penned (not published) could not be verified.

So sue me. It's hard to defend copyright in court without getting something formally copyrighted. And if he didn't have the time to do that, I doubt he'll take the time to get my real name, hire a lawyer, and take it to court.
Thank you sewell for the information.
Regardless of any legal problems I MIGHT have with vegeta and paddyman, they don't apply to this thread. It's about a PvP guide that should give some insight by providing general strategy and techniques. Again, if you have something to add or change you've been invited to LEGALLY do so, as I don't plan on taking anyone to court. But I might omgwtfbbqpwnz0r you in game. *-------------------------* This is not a good sig. |

I consider this a guide on it's own and the idea may have been brought up by someone else.
If more guides appear that are weroth mentioning I will create a combined sticky like the Merc corp where people can list what is discussed in their guide and a link to it.
Please keep the replies repspectful and bicker about copyright ingame.

It's a pretty clear-cut case. He took the guide that Paddy and I worked hard to create, changed a few words and added a bit to it. Then changed the setup so it wouldn't look the same.
