Officially no, however, some people have been able to run it under Wine. Malcanis for CSM8 |

A vast majority uses Windows. I've got Linux and it's nifty for servers and programming. Then I've got Windows for games so I don't have to waste my time with emulation. |

Whilst I don't see the point in wasting development effort on a Linux port (When emulation will do the job already) here are some questions to stimulate your mind:
(a) Why would the majority of EVE players be running Windows? (b) Why do you have to waste your time with emulation for games? (c) Do you see the inherent problem in your statement?
It is pretty much the equivalent of "They don't have bread? Then let them eat cake." EVE Ambulation and Avatars as a separate game - see here |

This. If you know what you're doing with Linux, any version, you'll dual boot windows anyway. You don't scare me. I've been to Jita. |

I guess if you're not doing anything serious with your computer then booting to windows might be a minor inconvenience. Nyan |

Whilst I don't see the point in wasting development effort on a Linux port (When emulation will do the job already) here are some questions to stimulate your mind: (a) Why would the majority of EVE players be running Windows? historical fact. Windows was made from start to: - be able to do fast graphics (that's why we had LoL crashes in Win95 or such) - be able to be installed and setup by anyone - be compatible with MS DOS software (famous story about SimCity)
Linux began as server/developer system and started to expand to home PCs too late. Even in 1999-2000 it was not an easy task to find good, easy to install/setup and comparable with Windows in graphics and software. Add here the fact that there is mostly few versions of Windows you should care of and there is 100500 Linux distributives "build on kernel version X.X.XX".
This made Windows the first and the one system for gamers (and game developers).
Ai Shun wrote:(b) Why do you have to waste your time with emulation for games? Binaries from Windows can't be used in Linux. Add here system libraries. And result - if you want to run Windows-only software on Linux you need to emulate.
Ai Shun wrote: (c) Do you see the inherent problem in your statement?

not really. this is just result of historical course of events and decisions. Another example: military and economical dominance of USA in the todays World. You can blame anyone but all history lead to this. |

TBH I don't think dual-booting is of much use these daysm aside from backup moments and hardcore needs. Usually there's a backup flash OS for that too. Virtualisation saved our multi-os butts. Wish people would understand what kind of nightmare it can be to develop a software for an ever changing non standard platform such as Linux is. |

If all windows user would hold thier breath until it does, it would happen. Because we would all die. |

Windows is a very good launcher program for EVE and Adobe programs. I keep it on a separate SSD, I think it's better to have one OS for work and one for fun and games, keeps me more productive in linux :)

Other people are on the ball in concerns to running Windows games under Linux.
People who want to play games, usually have a separate Windows installation. Those who don't, run WINE.
The potential playerbase for a native Linux client, who don't already run it via WINE or a separate Windows installation, is next to null.
They used to have both a Linux+WINE and OSX+Cedega distribution but the usage statistics showed that the Linux-version simply wasn't justifiable in terms of resources invested in supporting it.

If you think windows is crappy, you've never used OpenVMS or Solaris
Windows/DOS is, was, can only ever be, a games platform.
Why else would it have ever been successful? It's really very quirky (much less since the inclusion of the powershell)

Think of Windows like a game console you can install on normal computers. It's a bit expensive for what it does and you can't really use it for anything else, but it runs great games.

With the large number of publicly know and exploitable kernel bugs in Linux, it's nothing more then a gaping security hole. You can't really except CCP to work in support for every inferiors and outdated OS, when EvE is designed to run on windows, which has been the leading operation system 20 years now... GÇ£The best way to keep something bad from happening is to see it ahead of time, and you can't see it if you refuse to face the possibility.GÇ¥ |

Windows changes as much as Linux does, and Cedega was garbage with hideous support. After months and months of complaints by people when they would brag about having game X working gold! then let it break a week or two later and be unplayable for YEARS without lifting a finger to get it running again OR quit bragging that it worked perfectly in their advertizing, all the while ignoring every user they had, enough people noted that the free Wine worked better that they basically just went away. Also, OpenGL is faster and has more features than DirectX at this point. Tesselation features that are in the newest DirectX are old news to OpenGL. The video game supremacy is a market share path, not a technological one. |

Linux and Windows fan-boying aside, can we all just take a moment and remember what really unites us all?
The fact that neither Linux or Windows requires the use of skinny, gonad-crushing jeans and terrible 80's era glasses to operate.
Unfortunately, now is not the day for the glorious uprising of the *nix proletariat. However, with the way Ubuntu has been aggressively pushing/marketing their desktop environment and Steam adding *nix support, I would expect developments in the next decade to make a new Linux-EVE client a viable market. Could you do me a favour and post this on GD.net then on http://www.opengl.org/discussion_boards/forum.php then post the link to the thread back here.
