Ok.. it's been bugging me lately so I went to dictionary.com and found out that missle isn't even a word.
When I was like 10 I had a friend that argued with me saying "Missile" was an object that was thrown or shot (like an arrow) but "Missle" was.. you know.. missiles, like eve missiles.
Anyways, I always thought he was smarter then me so I believed him. It took me 12 years and a year and a half of playing Eve-Online while reading the word "missile" and thinking the devs were spelling it some freaky european way to realize that maybe it was me. So.. I checked.. and the rest is history.
I wonder how many people in life have thought I was an idiot but didn't want to outright call me one because they thought they were being nice for spelling it "Missle". Almost 2 years I've been playing Eve and not one person has corrected me.
OH but if anyone ever says "Your" instead of "You're" you can be sure anyone who sees it will let you know that it's not proper.

I really wish people would stop being so uptight about their language. Who cares if missle is not a word in the dictionary. To me it IS a valid word since people use it and other people understand what the guy (or girl) is saying. Languages change and with the internet you can rely on the fact that english will become more like engrish, just live with it.
I already consider engrish to be the new world language, not english :p

I don't know how many times I had someone tell me "It's You're! not your!" I got sick of it and started doing it their way.
People are weird about certain words but not others. For example, I can switch around than and then all over the place and people don't seem to mind.. You're and your will get you an ass beating anywhere on the internet though. I think they go through the same thing I went through and then use the same "you're, your" thing on other people to make themselves feel smart.. or something.. who knows

I'm a person who can't stand internet shorthand and other ways of mauling the language.. It's a different thing to not speak English as a native language (it's my third language, actually) and thus have difficulty with some words or conjugations, than to purposefully maim it so that it
- looks retarded
- makes me wish I could come over there and smack you over the head
- makes the text occasionally completely illegible
It's not even a faster way to write, despite the beliefs to the contrary. I especially "like" people who claim "n e one" is faster to write than "anyone". There is no practical purpose to it, the shorthand was invented for SMS messages, which have a 160 character limit and every message costs to send. In a medium where it doesn't matter how many messages you send, I'd rather see people at least TRY to write properly so they won't look like idiots (I also wish my Arbitrator had 10 low/high/med slots and space for 15 heavy drones).
For reference: their/they're/there, your/you're, than/then, definitely. 2 = two, not to. 4 = four, not for. 'Wat/whut/wut' are not words, 'what' is, 'dat' is not, 'that' is.

Then why do then and than go by unnoticed? Hell, I'm not even 100% sure I used "Then" the right way in this sentence.
Not that I hadn't learned this stuff.. but cmon, it's been a long time since I've been in school. I can't remember algebra either, I don't get daily tests from people online.
Seriously, after a while it started bothering me as well. It's not that deep, you're, your? what if you're just shortening the word to make it easier to type? Like, not using commas or apostrophes. It's normal for internet communication.. punctuation? I tend to do "..." more then I should. It's all good.. just don't mix up you're and your.. it's like a virus, it grows on you and I'll often tell people they're doing it wrong.
When I do it I'm nice about it though, it's usually so they can save themselves from the embarrasment of having someone tell them in the middle of an argument.

This thread lacks constructive content and is off topic for this forum. It reminds me of the numerous threads we had a few months back regarding the use of commas as decimal points and/or number separators, and how it differs in various countries.
Please understand that we have a lot of players from across the globe that may not speak English as their first language. Whilst proper spelling and grammar is important, it would be nice to cut them a bit of slack, mmkay?
Besides - we have enough threads on missiles already.
