Commissar Kate wrote:I would not worry about it too much, many real world ships share the same or similar name even though they are from different countries of origin.
The US and Russia have both used fish to name their submarines for example.
Perhaps a more relevant example would be that both the US Navy and British Royal Navy have had ships named "Enterprise"
Enterprise/Enterprize actually have an interesting history behind them, they don't actually follow the "Naming Conventions" utilised by either the US Navy or Royal Navy.
In both cases they are actually a continuation of the fact that the original were taken from a nation previously at war, to a point where they have become a Legacy Name; that do not follow Naming Conventions.
I would also point out that the Designation, is different from the Class Name. e.g. HMS Enterprise is currently an Echo-Class Research Vessel, while the USS Enterprise is currently a Enterprise-Class Aircraft Carrier (soon to be replaced by a Gerlad Ford-Class)
When we're talking ships in EVE, assuming similarities to Real-Life Designation; then the CNV Okigaiken (name of my Charon) would be considered a Charon-Class Freighter
Something I do agree though, is that the ship Class Designations could be pointed out that they don't really properly follow Conventions even within the naming schemes they are suppose to be following.
The Gallente and Caldari ships follow a naming convention far more closely than any of the other ships, even if there are some small inconsistencies. This said something that CCP could also do, for example when they rebalanced the Merlin from a Turret-Launcher ship to a Turret only ship; would be to create a new Class to echo these changes with the old one still being available.
I mean I know there are plenty of people here who likely believe the Hookbill has always been a pure Launcher-based ship, when it actually was the same as the Merlin for a very long time with both Turret and Launcher slots.
Personally I think it would be good if CCP took the oppurtunty to provide a better naming convention system to the ships, or rectify minor discrepancies. Still it isn't a big deal tbh, after all while these mean one thing to us; as said above they could be something else within the EVE universe itself.
We just don't have enough background information on the Flora & Forna or Religions / Beliefs within the EVE Universe. In-fact if it wasn't for a few players back when the game originally launched doing a large amount of back-story for each of the Factions the Caldari (for example) would still be little more than a group of Capitalist-Military focused people who have absolutely no care for anyone else within the universe.
Rather than the quite rich history and background they have today. In-fact all of the Races were incredibly bland initially... they are today because of what we the players have made them more than CCP. |
