It's more like getting into a shuttle, seeking the low sec. system with 50 podkills in the last hour and going there. The amount of stupidity in this case and when being scammed is approximately the same.

i still dont give a damn if its the scammer's fault or the victim's fault
they scam, yes... and they also SPAM like hell.... its almost as bad as the god forsaken can spam in empire!
hell, id love to declare war on the corps of the can spammers, just so i can blow the cans straight to hell
the difference between can and escrow spam is that we HAVE to look at and inspect every single one of those bloody fake escrows, iv wasted hours looking for named guns, implants, ships, BPs, and modules on escrow, just becuase of these spammers... that, IMO is enough to ban their worthless acounts from the game.... if any of them have T2 BPOs, who cares? CCP watches those, and theyd just be re-seeded

whos fault it is doesnt matter, who starts the chain of events (the spammer) thats what matters
ban the a**holes, and no refund for them either!

To be honest, I think the presence of this guide is a good thing. Everyone who reads it is going to check their escrow purchases from now on, aren't they?
It's not like the game hides the contents of the escrow from you. Such a tactic is not one I approve of but it really is your own fault if you get caught out by this. It's a scam that relies on the target being stupid, nothing more.

2 words... Role Playing!
I hate the scammers, and have been caught out in the past because of it. But Eve isn't supposed to be an ideal environment were people can go about their business without danger. The pilot travelling through 0.0 risks being pirated, the NPC hunter risks being popped by rats, the trader has his own dangers albeit not physical ones.... that of the pirate scammer. In any role playing environment their should be a decent measure of good and bad characters or it becomes stale and uninteresting.
The fact that some people are too lazy to check what they are buying is tough tbh...
I do however agree with those calling for these scammers to have some balls and use their main chars. But then so should ore thieves.........
