My apologies if this is the wrong forum channel to ask, but...
Does anyone routinely play EVE on 56k dial up?
I have had to give EVE a swerve since Cold War due to immensely long update download times, but I am curious as to how regular 56k players get through this?
Also how is the game experience in general?
BTW, Back to 1MB ADSL at end of next week so can get my fix

I played on 56k for a few weeks when I moved house and my broadband was unavailable for a while.
I believe one of my corp members plays over 56k modem all the time.
It's slightly more laggy, expect a wait if you've got 600 items in your hanger.

I play(ed) on dialup just fine. Only real frustration was browsing the market and the occasional busy warp. But day-to-day Eve uses tiny amounts of bandwidth.

I am on a 23K dialup connection and I have been playing EVE for a very long time. I have no problems at all other than downloading patches which I do at night. -------------------------------------------- NEW! 1/1 scale assembled plastic model benco97, Six different poses, Buy one NOW!*

Not everybody has access to dsl though, few of my alt's corp guys have been playing 56k since they started, never hear them complaining. When you live out in a caravan in the middle of the desert, i guess you got no choice

It's playable using 56k, though ISDN is better if you can't get ADSL.
If you try to use Teamspeak though expect terrible lag, unless you throttle back the bandwidth that TS uses.

I played eve over 56k for the first 8 months or so of my eve life. Never had much of a problem cept for the occasional wait for patches/load screens and slow market searches. ---

Edited by: GeekWarrior on 25/07/2005 02:48:18 About 95% of the time I play EVE on a 56k dialup connection, but since my phone lines suck so bad it's really only a 24.0kbps connection.
Fortunately I have a number of friends that are able to get broadband and have it at my office as well. It really isnt that bad though. There are only two things I can't do.
1) Fleet ops 2) Teamspeak and eve at the same time. even running at the lowes speex codec i get horrible lag.
[EDIT]Oh I almost forgot. It takes FOREVER to login. I really would love to know why EVE downloads just under 2megabytes of crap everytime the server reboots. It'a a reall pain in the ass.[/EDIT]

My Dad plays on 56k regularly with no problems. On big patch days...he drives 60 miles round trip to my house to get a cd :)
I think he should save his gas and just get broadband..but..hey..what do I know :) |

Cant get anything other than 56k where I live, I have played it for over a year now and no problems, I just visit a m8's house when patches come out and im good. Sure Logging in is a little slower and large hangers take a while to load up (fleet battles dont even go there hehe) but in genral, EVE was recomended for online play with 56k, and its one of the main reasons I play, (other than this strange addiction to the game, must be the subliminal messaging)

Edited by: Wahad Bredkebir on 25/07/2005 08:16:59 I ve switched from an ADSL to 56k and the only difference is the first login after DT, Market and hangar that are a bit laggy but it's very playable.
I switch to 128K ISDN recently and when i dont CTD :p I can run two accounts and teamspeak very fine.

well ive been playing on a 56k running at 31k most of the time due to aussie telcos being pathetic but apart from market and large PVP battles eve runs reasonably well it only becomes a problem with 10 ships or more (player) on screen at once

I've been using Dial-up since Beta, it was the main selling piont for me. A massive game, able to run without any exspensive Computer or line upgrades.
There have been plenty times where its noticeable tho, as i sonetimes use mates computers who have ¨ber connections. 1 situation in particular: When doing 0.0 runs, Even tho I hit gates and jump 4-5 seconds before Pk, some seem to jump faster than me, and are allready waiting in the next system when I finally finish 'Entering Space' I assume this is becuse they're on cable.
The maket is considerably slower with 'show active items' switched on, so I leave it switched off.
Patches are a completly different matter alltogether tho i dont attempt to dl the larger ones at all anymore. I either have to get a copy on a Usb Memory stick from freinds, or grab the latest builds and patches when i'm at Lan's with mates.

Been playing with 56k for 1.5 yrs now, its fine but opening cans with many objects will lag you, fleet ops will lag you, and teamspeak/ventrillo will lag you - thus i am a carebear

I live back out in the woods you see with my wife, kids, dogs, chickens, geese, and a stupid goat. My options are 56k dial up or nothing. Wait a minute, there is a option. DIRCWAY yeah only need $500.00USD to buy the equipment, and $59.95USD a month there after.
So instead of putting us poor folks down, why dont you haul out that fat coin purse your sitting on an make a donation.
For $500.00USD I will change the name of the goat, from Butt Head to the name of a popular evil pirate here on Eve Just kidding.

I play fairly regularly on a GPRS connection when I am travelling (staying in hotels) nd can't get a 3G signal. Not the best but it is playable for a bit of hauling, courier missions etc.
I'd be interested to know if anyone else plays on a mobile setup.

56K is fine. You have to turn down eve's demands a bit, but I can run 3 accounts plus TS on one PC using a 56K modem. OFC that would be something like a hauling op or maybe ice mining, but it's possible. As Joe pointed out one does lag a second or two jumping for no good reason, so it's not good for 0.0 hauling really.
What I CAN'T do on my modem is frigate duels. I can PvP okay, in fact I'm not bad in a BS, but frigate duels I lag a second or two behind and in a frigate fight that's too long.
Fleet battles I don't find myself lagged any more than other ppl. Of course I turn things like turrets and effects off so the PC/connection isn't working too hard regardless.

I'm working over in Kazakhstan, the 56K here is orrible, so I put in 256K ADSL... works a treat with TS and Eve at the same time, but it costs a bit... $200 US per month with 500MB Cap. If I get horny during the month it costs around $450 US.
