I am new to the game, so I dont have a frame of reference to support or oppose any of these, but it did lead me to an interesting idea.
Eve seems quite driven economically by players - i.e. I mine and sell my ore, someone else buys and refines the ore, someone else transports the minerals, someone else manufactures an item, someone buys the manufactured item.
Science and research are part of this game in at least some capacity.
My idea is that suggestions for new features are made by players. Eve deveolpers review, select, and approve suggestions for new features. Once a feature is approved, players may begin 'research' on the item. The suggester gets a head start on research, but all players may reasearch the new feature. Finished reasearch gives (I belive is what is used in Eve to make new items) a blueprint which the player then uses to manufacture the item. Perhaps an in game copyright and royalty system could be in place for short times to encourage R&D investments.
As an example, someone sugested ore compressors
1. Paw Sandburg (for example) suggests a module that compresses ore 2. Developers decide to add the feature 3. Paw Sandburg is given research points for making the suggestion 4. The game is modified to include the potential new feature and released 5. All players are given the green light to begin research on the new module and depending on thier science skills, research facilities, and ISK expendetures someone finishes reasearch and gets the first blueprint 6. The player with the first blueprint may begin manufacture of the new module 7. The player with the first blueprint may patent his blueprint for a short time (month?) 8. The blueprint can be stolen like any other piece of cargo 9. The manufacured items are sold to players though exsisting markets.
This sort of thing may be fun for industrial and trading type groups of players and it could add a new layer to the economy of Eve. Additionally, it gives an interesting way for the developers to solicit feature requests and reward good ideas.
