i loved eve ALOT more when it was still in its baby age but after beta of corse.
it was alot funner, and you could actualy do what you want, like i went in 0.0 wit a frig and mined the good ores, and was fun played helped me out in 0.0, and i wasent even in any alliance or any thing i wsa just some playing flying around , and explosring and wanteds to mine, prety looking ores.
and i rember getting killed by frigs in yulai, and etc, man thoes were the good ole days :) i wish eve could recreate thoes early days some how. :)
how was EVE fun to YOU, back in its Baby stage Not beta as i said before.

CCP should never have introduced techII and the age of gank
pvp was alot more fun and skillfull in the gemini period, piracey was more fun and there were bounty hunters to have fun with.
Now its gank teams of pirates, alliances, bounty hunters and mercs flying about with all ganksetups and little skill.
People were alot more fun back then, there was not this fear of 0.0 and low sec that there is now, even though there is less to fear now.
I still enjoy the game now, but the pvp sux

I remember me mining in my probe crokite and bistot in i-uu hehe that was fun indeed. that said, NO, eve wasnt funnier to me than it is now.
The WIDE diversity of ships introduced since the release, with the most recent addition being the faction BS, getting more common every day, makes me really more addicted than ever. I've never had so much fun than what im experiencing these days, with the excitement of commanders/officers, complexes, freighters etc, the list is soooo long really... i can understand why you all like thse days past, and i do too, but tbh the experience was very limited and if things had stayed as they were, i think alot of us woulve left within a couple of months, me the first castor was the beginning of everything. (and what a mess when it was deployed LOL)

Nostalgia rules, but not like it used to.
The fresh experience of your first frigate, cruiser, battleship is a true delight. As is the crushing loss of losing it in combat. These things carry less weight as time passes, as it's not your only battleship, it's just another battleship.
I'm not old enough to have that perspective, but from my point of view, things are just starting to get interesting.

100% all sweet memories.
I don't wanna say the game is worse now than before, but chages in EW, changing in missiles, changings, changings, PLUS new stuff, after 2 years learning gameplay i would like just to play the game. But too often what i hardly learn changes, and new stuff comes...sometimes i feel a 2 months hardplayer knows more than me about actual gameplay.

Arguing that namechanging would promote griefing is somewhat moot given the current FFA on that front.

There seems to have been two cultural movements within Eve over the course of it's development.
1. Killboards - these have changed the way people interact. Before these were widely used, a player had little to gain from ganking some other targt that it wasn't at war with or had some expensive cargos or mods etc. Now the player can have documentary evidence of his killing achievement, for many players this has become something akin to collecting stamps (though imagine that they like to think it is a lot cooler than this)
2. Galcom (the forums) - There's a lot of chit-chat a lot of hyperbole and a lot of gossip. Over the months this gets taken in by players and seeps into their consciense. Sometimes people forget that when people write on the forums they usually have an agenda and often an ulterior motive behind their post. Many things happen everyday in the world of Eve that never get mentioned on the forums. For example, how many people write a post "not attacked in low sec by pirates!" or something similarly banal.
So i think it's not the game that's changed put some of the ideas and attitudes of the players.
For me the saddest thing that regularly appears on the forums is when you see so many people being shot down in flames for doing or suggesting something different.
There is no correct way of playing EvE. Don't believe what they tell you ;)

I miss the days where the Surgical Strike damage bonus grew exponentially with each weapon and damage mod fitted, the days before ammo range modifiers worked, the days where tracking didn't matter. There was just something about an Armageddon with 7 Heavy Mod Energy Beams and 8 Extruded Heatsinks, firing every 2 seconds with a damage mod of 18X and never missing anything from 40KM with Multifrequency Crystals that brought a huge grim to my face.
Damn, we've come a long way since then. Kinda makes current balance debates seem rather moot.

All you could do in EVE back then, you can do now.
As for PVP, it was far more unbalanced, and gank-setups were easier to create. It's only because the concept of the gankageddon and such hadn't surfaced yet that this nostalgia is seeping in.
I still remember the time when remote sensor dampeners caused people to CTD. Saying the game hasn't improved just isn't right. All that's happened is that you've grown jaded. ------------------------------------------- "My main griveance with the Caldari state was that once I had finished my work for them, they wanted me dead."
"No, it's none of your business." |

So what I did I decided to set-up a ming op.Set up instas safe spots brought in a secure cargo container.Found a nice unpopulated obsidian ochre system. And never mined again.Minig boring..maybe later when my skill are better and when I can fly a barge(the cheapest one of course).

I agree. EVE was more fun back in the good old days. I was flying alone in alliance controlled teritory (as neutral) and there was never a huge ganksquad moving arround. Sometimes I met a pirate flying solo (!) and had a nice fight (or I ran). I loved the small skirmishes with 5 Ships on either side wich lasted for 5-10 mins.

The days were antimatter was the only choice cause the damage mods for different ammo works but range penalty in decription does not work at all!!!
The sense of this 3d should be: "Why, after 20M skillpoints added to my char, i fell myself less powerful than 2 years ago?"

I remember getting thirteen guys together from completely different corps and going to a deadend empire system with Megacyte and Bistot. We tried to mine and hold off an NPC cruiser spawn and we got a few ships blown up. I lost my prized probe. My consolation prize was I got to keep one of the 650mm projectile cannons the rats drop. I saved it for months to mount on my stabber with great pride.
I actually like Eve better now. The playerbase is just coming to grips with owned/defended systems and the PVP vs. Industrial demographics. I would hate to step backwards.

I missed the days where you were uber if you had a cruiser and when you saw a battleship, your jaw dropped and you started drooling.
Remember seeing my first bs, was an arma when a bunch of us were attacking some ruined npc station.

I totaly agree with you. T2 items bah, why didn't they add more gun types or different ships instead. I was realy dissapointed with the creative thought of this game got ruined with those t2 items ( different texture on old module/ship, add the II icon, whoila new item )and re appearance of gank setups.

Ah, nothing like rose-tinted nostalgia is there.
Things were so much better when I was a kid, people were more respectful and video games, like Jet Set Willy, were built with fun in mind and gameplay rather than graphics were key....
You have go to love all these - I have been playing longer than you and it was all much better before you lot all got here threads.

It's called evolving. Before players didnt really know how to fit their ships and were still testing and learning to use different modules. Today everyone can read the most optimal gank setups from these forums. There was also less players which allowed the non-combat people travel more freely.

Gameplay is borked atm imo. I haven't really enjoyed eve as I used to since the release of Exodus. Its been the worst thing to ever happen to this game imo. Have some quality memories from when I furst started playing though, and I think the only reason I still play is in the hope that eve will become as enjoyable as it used to be.
That, and they changed the ******* UI so it isnt even nice to watch your ship being killed anymore |

Beringe and Sid made good valid points.
I have as much fun now, which is a lot, in this game as in its early eras, just because I try new things and dont expect things to be one way or another, I Just try to make the best of things and in my oppinion, I would say things are going well. Dont focus on the bad...
One has to realize that not everything is new now for the older players so one has to seek out new things himself instead of complaining about the old that was fun before and is no more because of changes which did not agree to your style of playing the game. (just what I feel seems to be happening to many people).
hmm stopping before it goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on... etc

Eve was a lot more fun before, all the fun stuff have been removed:
Cruise Missile Kestrel Torpedo Blackbird/Caracal Super Fast Blackbird Oversized AB Multi-MWD Ships Gankageddon with twice the range
Just a few of the last cool stuff that have been removed.

NO!
In the early stages of Eve the game was pure PVP!
That was not fun. Some of the players wanted more than shoot them up boom.
Today is better. There is balance in the force!
The main problem is not the game mechanics its the players with big freaking heads!
"Ohhh I run an Alliance I am oh sooo powerful!" what ever.
"Ohh I can blob and destroy ships" what ever.
The CCP will make this game as it should be. They will make it soo there is a constellation game. Where players fight over smaller bits of space and big head game goes away! -------------------------- Does it matter why, its when is more crucial!
Sometimes you dont worry about today when its thursday. |

Problem is too many people have become bored with the game and instead of letting others enjoy they game they would rather be griefers. The earlier days ships were more balanced, gate campers rare, roveing MOO fleets scarey.

Edited by: Quanteeri on 17/08/2005 15:14:37 Edited by: Quanteeri on 17/08/2005 15:13:16 I think the game has improved tremendously since I joined a little over a year ago. Granted, yes, it was still fun, but I really like all the added content, it gives you more options of things to do.
Though I do have to admit, I long for the days when I'd log on and be completely starstruck by the universe. I think that was before our war with Mr. Blades(or at least his friends) and when I learned about instas.

I belive it's natural that people tend to move towards the most damaging setup possible. The only way to limit this is to make damage mods so that they modifiy things less and less as you use more.
My feelings is that you use a damage mod you get the bonus, the second daamge mod you get 1/2 the bonus, and then the third damage bonus has no effect at all.
This way battle will tend to last a little longer, and you people will use other moduels which rarely get used at this time. This also increases the sales of said items.

Originally by: GlimmerMan I miss the days where the Surgical Strike damage bonus grew exponentially with each weapon and damage mod fitted, the days before ammo range modifiers worked, the days where tracking didn't matter.
Well yeah, exactly. Back in the time shortly after release weapons especially were bjorked beyond belief, and you couldn't believe the descriptions on anything. I remember finding out WEEKS after release that ammo range modifiers weren't working, so one was best off just using the most damage ammo all the time. Plus the stacking damage mods with surgical strike multiplier. Back then a cruiser could kill another cruiser with one volley, with top mods and decent skills. I don't miss that at all.
I'll grant some changes are less fun. The EW changes haven't been good for EW IMHO, but the guns and balancing we're at now are pretty excellent IMHO. Maybe damage mods need a bit more of a nerf, but overall the uber gank ship is more a product of the current tactics than of design.
Personally I like Tech II compared to the old system. It was annoying to get named guns in the old days, now the supply of a good (if hard to fit) gun is pretty good and the prices are usually better than what the named ones used to go for. Admittely the skill reqs are a bit nasty, but we all needed something to do, I remember the time in this game when people were training all the racial BSes to 4 or 5 just cuz there was nothing else they wanted or needed to train....

A lot of that stuff was fun when you were using them, but less fun when you faced it. You're leaving off the list "cruise missile Rifter" though. That's the one I REALLY don't miss. I lost a LOT of kestrels before someone told me that Rifters could actually dodge cruise missiles. That one rather sucked if you weren't the one in the rifter...

Yes, I had more fun in the early days. Weren't so many sentry guns around then and things were more open.
However, the game as a whole is way better now.
So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak. |

I have to say, if this game hadn't changed in the last two+ years you'd have a very different playerbase. I'd be willing to bet most of the vets would have moved on to other things, and the only people playing would be those who started within the last six month period.
Ongoing development = new and interesting gameplay.
No ongoing development = stagnant, boring gameplay.
At a certain point, the kestrel and the rifter were the only two frigates you ever saw with any real frequency, that's definitely changed now. I think the MkII project will give even more benefit to using other ships, other than the ganker du jour.

I can't believe some people, I completely agree with the reply... fun, yeah for the ones that where using obvious unbalanced stuff. For everyone that didn't it sucked royally.
Did I have more fun in the old days.... yeah I did. Does that have anything to do with the actual game? nope. EVE is WAY WAY better now then it's ever been. The game was a lot more fun, cause risks where lower ( 30k skillpoints vs 30mil etc. ), and everything was new, skill training taking minutes, and using new modules hourly, can't even remember training anything under 2 weeks for a long time, beyond some new skills. That's where the nostalgia comes from, not from EVE actually being better. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Actually, dual drives was a hell of a lot of fun. And then I dont mean dual mwd ravens which were obviously borked. But frigs/cruisers. Every race had a funky dual drive possible crusier rig, Rupture, Moa, Arbitrator, Vexor, and Maller. Stabbers were fun too, but couldnt fit any weapons due to crap grid.
Actually, those were the days. Now everything seems so bloody slow.
