Oh dear. We're discussing things being on fire in the complete vacuum of space, and people want to talk about how to do it more realistically
there is no problem with fire in space, it can be simply a different fire like a plasma one.

No it ain't ... it glows because of the heat it generates, which is due to thermonuclear reactions. No fire of any description is involved.

Comets are even less on fire than the stars, which aren't on fire at all. The only reason you can see comets, is reflected starlight from their component particles.
_______ I tried strip mining, but I lost and it's cold flying around in space naked. |

the fires on your ship, surely the burning oxygen inside the ship at a hull breach, where the vacuum of space is pulling it outside.....

Technically speaking, even a very small hull breach would result in the air being sucked out at nearly instantaneous speeds. Would it have time to actually combust if the hole was say the size of a 1500mm artillery shell? :) Probably not.

Man, I forgot all about those trailers. And I can remember seeing pics in the archives of a Dominix with damaged plating--the skin on the ship was actually changed to show burnt/shredded/missing hull segments.
I'm flat broke right now...but I swear, I'd upgrade whatever equipment was necessary to accomodate those effects. And not just on player ships, either--NPC ships should show damage and engine fires as well.
Maybe there should be an option to turn that stuff on and off, but let's face it--the graphics and art of this game is what brought us to EVE. Anything that makes the effects better adds to the experience, provided we don't pay too steep a price in game performance.

I think your ship should get all beat up, like in Crazy Taxi.

what i mean is that the old beta effects were SO much cooler (seems like a lot of u agree with me too ;p i guess :|) (but i really like the fires ;p). and i THINK (remeber previous statement bout me not bein tech heavy) was because they were to much for system back then, there wouldnt really be any server side lag for the explosions if they were just a set explosion, or even a picked one out of a few (think that might make a little). Or having the old fires either, itll be client side lag only (probably, i think).
And i remeber ppl saying that beta taxed their systems A LOT and there was a lot of client side lag (i bet the ervers were damn stable with so few ppl ;p), But now most ppl have better system then the beta stuff would ever need, so maybe add an option to add them in again (incase theres ppl that still run on old and not-so-powerful computers (i love my new gefroce 6200 \o/ stuck with some crap geforce 4 ti 4400 for 3 years :( ;ppp).
but the thing about the plating changing and stuff like that, that would be damn cool and id love to see that, but seing as how it would have to update for everyone (attacker and the attacked) it MIGHT (remeber not tech heavy ;p) create some lag. though it would be damn cool ;p so would seing pieces of ur ship come off and see wee little ppl get sucked out (OMG TIMMY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO)
yeah ok ill shutup now :|

At least, we need multiple fire points as we get more damaged. Have you seen the tempest on fire? One orange ball of fluff at the bottom engine, and thats it. Doesn't really give the impression of a 'close call' now does it. Right down to 1% hull, you only get this little ball of fluff before 'bang'. OK the explosions are good now, if still needing a little work. Personally I would like to see bigger ships break into 2-3 bits, and the bits explode. Imagine bringing an Apoc down and watching it break in half before blowing.
I like the sparks on the beta vids too. gives the fire some rage.
Please CCP, get the damage look sorted. ------

Yeh, the "hollywood-educated anonymous" just got a little less anonymous.
Didnt you know its heavenly light shining through small holes in the heavenly curtain. Our sun is just a bigger hole in the curtain than the others, thats all.

let us not forget the other things with beta in the beta, in 1.0 space if you could go over 500m/s in your frig you could keep out of concords range and KILL THEM ALL in the beta you got cascading errors that would lock your PC up, all the time. in the beta the devs where the ones doing the ganking.
