Personally i think this will just give new players another reason to complain about thsi skill training time. Anyone who trained a skil to lvl 5 did so with enoughf reason already, so i dont think we need any more reason.

Originally by: Kiithnaras Okay, this idea, while interesting, holds little water. I have to agree with Josh and the others: the marginalized bonus from lvl 5 skills as opposed to lvl 4 is really there for new players to be able to compete with old veterans. you suddenly give the veterans superpowers, and either the new players quit, giving the older players no easy targets, or the new players hide out and just skill for several months.
Eeeh, ok, you were the only one who said anything valuable to really kill this idea. Guess you are right, although I think it would be wonderful for the game in general, new players would suffer, and that they do already I guess.
Ah well, back to the drawing board.

I hate to say it but I also disagree with the level 5 bonus as much as I would like one. I really don't think it will be such a disadvantage to new players as they have their hands full just exploring EVE and it's possibilities. Older pilots flying the big ships are going to cream a noob hands down so don't talk about new players competing with old. But I think such a bonus will throw the game out of whack in addition to the fact that some skills give you access to other skills which can be considered a bonus.
It might be better perhaps if they offered such a bonus for training skill groups to level 5 and the bonus was divided among those skills or applied to each. To give an example in gunnery if you had trained the Small, Medium, and Large Projectile turrets to level 5 (prior to the release of the new specialization skills)then you could get a bonus. This would encourage players to specialize and design their characters more carefully rather than train the next cool skill. And of course this would also encourage players to train skills to level 5.
That would not have a major impact on the game while it would encourage you to choose how your character developes and of course encourage you to fully train up a skill.

so maybe new players should stay away from 04 and under then, till they are ready.
So you expect them to stay out of PVP for a year or more so they can just START to make a dent in a PVPer's shields? --------------------------------------------- Johnny Twoshoe - Nuttier Than Thou (\_/) (O.o) (> <) |

The skill system is almost perfect (the only thing I have any issues at all with are a few of the level 5 requirments for TL2 mods - and most of them are fine). The skill system does not need to be changed... this thread is worthless.

Quite often the bonus for training a skill to level 5 is that you can access a neat piece of kit (Tech II for example) or a new skill (Advanced learning).
That said I think that another bonus would not upset the balence of the game too much. My idea is a specific additional learning skill for each skill category. A skill that reduces the training for that category. An example, Once you have Spaceship command trained to level 5 you have such a great knowledge of flying spaceships that you get a 2-5% reduction in the time it takes to train subsequent skills in the spaceship command catergory. Alternatively once you get to level 5 in the categories "base" skill (Science, Gunnery, Spaceship Command, etc...) you then have the option of training a specialised learning skill that gives you a 1 or 2% reduction to training time per lvl (for skills in that category). This would work much like the Learning skill, however it would only reduce the training time for skill in that category.
Anyway thats just my 2 cents on the topic

Ater Angellus has a good idea. I like it and it makes sense.
