I was wondering, if there is ever gonna be a limit to the amount of ppl that can log in at once, even if u say that the server can hold 20k or 24k i dont think it can, maybe if no one did anything ;p
always lag and usually problems when large amounts of people are on.
so if we reach a certain amount wants gonna happen? are we gonna turn to 'sharding'? hope it never happens? curious bout the future :o

I'm sure theoretical limits are well within the bounds you are expressing. The trouble with theoretical limits however is that they tend to assume the load is spread nice and evenly. Expect to see problems when too many people try to book long weekends away at hotel rooms in Rens. +

Eve is a node distributed world. There's a bunch of servers, each 'taking care' of several systems. The 'lag' shows up when there's too many people on a single node, but when that happens, the nodes 'load balance'. So yes, there's a finite limit. But a) computer tech keeps improving and b) with 24k online, presumably the number of subscribers would have also increased, which would mean that they could afford to up the number of nodes.

25-30k is the max if players are evenly distributed across nodes, and they're doing nothing (basic keep-alive packets), or something like that.
Realistically it depends on distribution.. around 15k some nodes will probably start crashing.

at least from what ccp has stated in the past- more server hardware will be added as the subscriber base gets larger, the system is designed to keep expanding with the players. the intention is to never split up the game.
the novelty of having a non-sharded game that puts all the players in one universe (and the screwiness that results with all different people having to coexist just like in 'real-life'(tm)), is one of the most compelling reasons why i continue to play eve over other mmorpg's. i certainly hope that ccp can continue to keep it this way.

Its 2010. Eve has 1.000,000 online users. the monthly fee is $25. New Regions of space has been discovered. The old tech II BPO are being traded on escrow.
You need 5gig memory and a NVidia 35000 8gig with holographic interface! Your controls are actually linked to you. You buy implants at the local game store!

We Svetlana they will keep it for sure that way.
As for limits i remmber CCP saying 25 k simultanbously is limit. But it was long time ago .
I expect and hope with the innovations in computers and the fact that playerbase is growing that soon they will upgrade the whole infernal machine.
I have a little dream taht in 1-2 years with the new hardware upgrades, as the playerbase increases and they have cash, we will reach a point when you can fight a 50 against 50 ships battle without major lag, allowing for some manouvers and tactic, not shooting whenever you see whats going on on current slide.

i think that the servers need to be upgraded now anyway :| and i stay in empty ass systems of .0 and i still see plenty of lag ;p (not client side lag ;p, that sometimes, depends on hat else il doin though)

I think it's a big problem, what if an ingame event was to occur and 5000 people all came to one system to watch? No way the server could handle it...

Edited by: Sumica on 23/08/2005 20:16:31 What is this "load balence" every one talks abought? And why do we always quote it? Sounds like it is just a tech term for why the server seems to drop large groups of players every time it seems a big (50+ ship) battel took place even if the battle only took 2 min to finish.

There is a finite number of nodes (server machines) which run systems, when a system is empty it is not being run by any nodes. When someone trys to enter an empty system it is assigned to the node that currently has the least workload and started up.
That is the basics of the EVE loadbalancing.
Problems with large fleetbattles occur because usually by peak times when they tend to happen, most/all of the nodes already have a moderate amount of load on them, then a whole load of people pile into a single system and start doing things that cause lots of load, taking it over its capabilitys and crashing it (or slowing it down at least)
I remember talk by devs that systems that tend to see a lot of people or a lot of combat (HED-GP was one historically, as was yulai for instance) get assigned there own nodes for sole use - to try to work around the worst problems, short of being psychic they can't do that for random systems where fleetbattles end up though. . ----- Apologies for any rambling that may have just occurred.

Realistically how scaleable is EVE?
If EVE became popular overnight and hit 1 million users, could EVE with its current software architecture support this many users just by increasing the number servers and still not have to Shard?
Would be interesting to get some info about what the limit is, and a quick outline of how the architecture is structured e.g. how the SQL layer is distributed, is it one SQL server per region / constellation, how data replication is handled, node distribution, load balancing (are any aspects dynamic?), the amount of hardware it currently takes to support the current 14K users and what they believe are currently the potential bottlenecks etc.
Basically I'm just interested in the approach taken to design EVE for scalability. If any dev involved in the design has the time to reply, that would be cool.
(PS if I send you my old 486, can I have my own solar system dedicated to me )

I vaguely recall a dev post that stated given an even distribution of players the server could handle up to 50k people. Beyond that would require them to redesign the server architecture and rewrite the backend management or something like that. My guess the warning bells for the coders will start going off when we get ~ 25k-30k pop.

Yea, but has it worked? I think you'll find it's concentrated MORE people arround a few hubs, thus making things worse.

i always thought they could run 50k now without many problems i guess once we reach a certain limit - the jove systems may be opened up more quickly than otherwise planned - that wouldcreate a lot of new space to play in.

opening up jove systems this early in the game would screw it up I think. They probably have that planned for stuff past tech 5 or maybe for the end of eve

well ive heard some aspects of jove could be opened up with kali - most likley just a few dozen empty systems or a few 0.0 zone jove stations in existign space to test the waters.
Personally think they need to start getting the backstory set up - with the COSMOS missions we have archology and hacking skills which means that perhaps that might be linked with ancient jove sites etc long abandoned.
And if not jove space then perhaps some more 0.0 zones down south or up north - a storyline could introduce say another 10 - a 30 year trip from gallente space at sub light velocities that set out 30 years ago to map and chart new star systems have discovered a tight cluster of 10 new solar systems with habitatible planets - it oculd tie in with the current terreorforming events we have been having - the corparation in question could be given rights to begin setting up stations etc. Perhaps it could link out of gallente empire on a long jump gate into a new area of the map with the 10 new systems - storyline events could be set up in terms of new frontiers - new stations a battle for NPC corps to get into the area etc.

If we are going to get jove tech before jovian space is opened... it'll be though the angel cartel. Who kinda have a monopoly on it by moving into the stns before anyone else. Furthermore they are the only non jovian faction ingame to actually have a jove stn. Dammn stn is friggin huge with the new stn resizes. But its pretty interesting considering all their jove tech their still losing millions of ships to people in empire :P

lol to keep us interested if the jove are off the radar now a slow implementation if new modules - storyline and event related big news items etc.
Perhaps a system here and a system there as well.
More angel - jove stations or perhaps some faction can discover a new piece of jove tech (not uber) but just something that can be rare in the game - it could be put in as a storyline - perhaps a slightly powerful strip miner.
Or a mining implant that can increase mining yield on trit :) - could come via one of those jove secret agents floating around.
