The way to win in EVE is to set a very long term goal for yourself and try to accomplish it. If you do, then you've won.
The thing that makes EVE different from other MMOs is that there is no true late game or even mid game. Once you figure out what sort of ships you want to fly and how to make ISK then everything is open from there. There are so many different ways to play the game. I accidentally my assets, is this bad?-á |

For myself, I like to learn something about the game world; even if it costs me a ship, if I learn a new trick or figure something out then I win. !?!? wait a minute, didn't I loose? IDK what is winning in Eve to you?
If you are looking at the related kills type battle reports from eve kill they are virtually always a confused mass of data. For whatever reason it always seems to put half of the folks on the wrong side of the battle before calculating isk and ships lost. There are some other sites folks are using now which allow you to take the data from that kill mail and manually move folks over to the side they belong on and then calculate isk and ships lost.
As for determining who won or who lost it is sometimes difficult. One side may get more kills in numbers and the other side might get more isk destroyed. That happens quite a lot. Generally I think most folks would go with the who destroyed more isk number but i guess it kind of depends on the difference. If its not a substantial difference then the numbers would look more impressive. In the end the kill board wont show the underlying reason for the fight. One side might be defending a pos, station or sovereignty. That wont show on the kill report. The defender may claim victory by winning that goal even though they lost more isk and ships. Often, however, the other side only challenged that sov, pos or station in order to provoke some carebear alliance into fighting. Determining a winner isnt always an easy proposition. |

For myself, I often spend too much time screwing around, whether its Eve, or youtube, or pen and paper gaming, or brewing / drinking beer, or sailing, or riding my 4 wheeler, or going for rwalks, or cooking...the list goes on and on.
Had I knuckled down and worked hard at money making I would be quite wealthy. As it is, we make our bills and I have some money in the bank, and I have a great family and plenty of time to screw around =-)
Honestly we will all be 6 feet under before you know it =-) and I know so many people with real problems that we in Eve don't have to face so much; loneliness, cancer, legal problems to do with drunk driving, divorce, tax trouble. Spending time at ones computer playing Eve probably lowers ones risk for all of those difficulties.
Maybe it could be said that we have an anti-addiction to responsibility and grown up behavior rather than an addiction to video games. We are made sharp by the whetstone of purity and truth that is the Empire, all due praises to her Majesty Lord of the host. The alternative to reclamation is to fall as wheat before the scythe. Winning to me in Eve is just being able to log in with the knowledge that I can just relax and enjoy the scenery because my projects are underway and my wallet has enough ISK to allow me to do whatever I want on top of that. |

I'd say you win at EvE either by becoming ludicrously wealthy, the top-man of a large Sov-holding Alliance, or by becoming renowned by lots of the community (In a positive way!).
Though EvE, much like life itself, doesn't really have a win point. It's just the fun stuff you get upto between the beginning and the end. Post with your main, like a BOSS! |

Eve punishes going afk more than any other MMO I've tried. That in itself makes Eve unfriendly to 'having a life'. In WoW I can just walk away from the computer in the middle of a fight and lose practically nothing. To me thats a game thats pretty friendly to people who have a life.

You can't "win" an open ended game. That's like people who talk about "winning" in life... whatever hippy, get a job. I would say when you've done all you care to do and you've achieved all of your own goals in EvE, you've "won"... at least until someone takes your win away or there's a good update from CCP.

It seems that most of the seemingly fundamental questions regarding Eve are the one's without any real strait answers...i.e., best ship for l4's, best fit for , how much is "too-risky" to carry in a freighter, what's the funnest thing to do in Eve, what's the dullest, so on and so on.
Personally, it's looking back at when you first started and realizing that you're glad you stuck with it because it's still a blast, has its "WTF" moments, and still suprises the hell out of you from time to time as well. |

When you have accomplished your strategic or tactical objective. When you have prevented your opponents from accomplishing theirs. When you have done enough to give yourself another chance later at accomplishing or thwarting. When you come out of a fight still in your ship. When you come out of a fight still in your pod. When you kill a greater proportion of their fleet than they have of yours. When you kill more of their ships than they have of yours. When you more ISK worth of their ships than they killed of yours (including when they lost a few T2 drones and you lost a frigate). When you manage to kill something before going down in an uneven fight. When you manage to get a kill on that guy who shot you when you accidentally found yourself in lowsec on the third day of your trial. When you manage to escape a fight which would have been disadvantageous. When you manage to drive off an enemy by the mere threat of force (see above). When you hold the field at the apparent end of hostilities. When you chose the right time to retreat. When you find that the market orders which have completed during the fight more than cover your losses.
There are almost as many different ways to "win" in EVE as there are ships to "win" in... though my favourite is still: When you bring a Blackbird (not a Falcon) back from more than one op where you took damage and got jams. |

I take back what i said.
It's not about enjoying the game. It's about how unreasonably emotional you can make a stupid person be. For example, you win EVE when people mention your name in General discussion posts about topics that have nothing to do with you, like how people are so butt hurt by your actions or awesomeness that that make EVERYTHING about you.
In other words, the only people who have ever won EVE are Mittens and James 315....and null sec lol |

When you are the richest player in EVE, you hold all nullsec sov personally with a holder alliance of only your alts, and you can multibox a fleet so huge that it can defeat the combined forces of every other player in EVE.
But it's not gonna happen, not for anyone. You don't win at EVE, just some people lose harder than others. The current person who is "losing least" is Somer. If he had 10 times the isk he does, and the inclination, he could make a serious bid at achieving the goal outlined above and winning EVE> |
