I have been looking at batreps for fleet engagements and the metrics are all over the place; ISK, ship loss ratios, who got the salvage, post battle forum smack talk, # of pilots who showed up, the list goes on.
For myself, I like to learn something about the game world; even if it costs me a ship, if I learn a new trick or figure something out then I win. !?!? wait a minute, didn't I loose? IDK what is winning in Eve to you? We are made sharp by the whetstone of purity and truth that is the Empire, all due praises to her Majesty Lord of the host. That's a difficult one. To me it's when I finally stop playing for good, then I've won.
Perhaps a less :bittervet: answer would be "when you're comfortable with what you're doing, enjoy it and stop bothering about silly numerical goals like isk or SP and start pursuing more personal goals, knowing you'll succeed". Amat victoria curam. Excellence in everything.

You sir won something far more important than eve.
For me winning at eve is about the little goals. Go out on a roam, come back without losing my pod - win! Malcanis for CSM 8

Most of Prov-bloc is not RP. I am, just because I like to spout strange religious dogma in local. But for most pilots it is a much smaller part of their profile. (Well admitted profile, I think all Eve characters are quite different from the people that play them.)
As for battles; I was reading over the results of G-5EN2, and tbh I'm not sure who won?! The talk on our forums is mostly about what we could do better next time. I couldnt make that fleet and so its actually been kind of tough figuring out how it went.

I win every time I make a sale on the market. Every time I make it through low sec camps without getting blown up. Every time I escort my alt through null with no problems. Every time I 100% a scanning location. Every time I make a discovery of sorts about how I should play better. etc
Just the little things that make me happy when I play EVE are wins in my book. |

"GAME OVER" appears on your screen.
Then you can't play before that unless you saved it before the alien, so u have to just post on forums.

You don't 'win' in EVE. You win at plaing EVE.
If you're having a good time, you're winning at playing EVE. If you're not having fun, best you re-assess what yo're doing, and why. Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

The thing about eve is it's just a treed mill. One day even goonswarm will no longer be there after being replaced by some other yet to be named alliance; death is the only assured inevitability. The only way to win eve is to get off and stop being apart of the cycle. CCP don't make us wait another decade for a drone overhaul; DRONE OVERHAUL NOW! |

As a nearly ten year bittervet, I can tell you that the only way to win is to not play the game.
I've won EVE a number of times, and lost it even more.
I've quit several times when the game got too boring, and I'm considering doing it again.... I've let three of my six accounts go inactive over the past few months, and can't find a reason to resub them. The game has become stale, boring, and full of people that think hate is a sport. I've had some very good times in this game, made some good friends, but most of the smart ones have all left the game, recognizing it for what it is. CCP is interested in taking your money, and doing the least amount of work for it. They haven't done an "Expansion" in years, just updates, trying to fix mechanics that they let go since the game started. CCP has been taken over by the fluff and mirrors crowd, where shiny ships and useless lines in the sky == cutting edge gameplay....
I've for years argued the EVE needs a Dynamic universe, where things are always happening, moving, changing.
The same dumb missions, over and over...No randomization.
Incursions should mean something, and get serious if they aren't fought and killed in a timely manner.
Corps and Alliance: Require an exponentially increasing fee for setting people blue.
0.0, make it dangerous space....Make the rats bigger and badder, camping stations, gates, using bubbles, make them a force to be reckoned with, rather than a simple farming commodity. If they aren't fought, they take over everything, including stations. Increase the value of payouts to matc the new rats.
Random events like Supernovas that actually change the landscape of the game. Blowing up a system, wrecking gates, requiring whoever owns stations in the system to rebuild them. Perhaps have a week of lawlessness in system while Concord reforms a battle group. When the stations blow, debris, cans and ships are blown out into the system, waiting for scanners to find.
This is EVE, it's supposed to be a darker world, but after ten years, it seems to be heading towards fluff and ponies, which really doesn't interest me....
The single biggest danger to EVE is the proliferation of ALTS! Kill an alt today!

I look back at what I did that day as I log off and it puts a smile on my face. That's always been my unit of measure in every game.
But there's always tomorrow. When the smiles get too rare you're just signing up for abuse. Time to move on. The odd thing with Eve, is the gut crushing feeling when you welp something big. Somehow it feels bad, but not in a negative depressing kind of way. You learn from it and move on. Logging in for several hours, day after day, just to end up ship spinning. Now that gets depressing. |

You can win a fight, you can win a war. You can win a few Isk, you can win a fortune. You can win a system, you can win a region.
You can win New Eden.
You can however not win EvE.
But somewhere in there, among the myriad ways to act in EvE, is always something that makes you smile. The one thing that makes you want to play again. Finding that is winning in and of itself.
Go on, find it. And smile. ISD Ezwal Lieutenant Community Communication Liaisons (CCLs) Interstellar Services Department |
