Does anyone remember the game that originated the phrase "for the win"?

Originally by: Saurien Guess I'm getting old, but I don't understand most of this leet-/dudespeak. Another "word" that eludes me is 4TW - what is that supposed to mean?
I realize PWN means "own", but why the P? I don't see the connection between O and P except that they are next to eachother in the alphabet (P doesn't even look like an O).
Please enlighten me children, so I may communicate with you
AFAIK, it's because typing 'own' or 'the' at high speed often resulted in typing 'pwn' or 'teh' by accident.
Over time this was done deliberately as it was supposed to be cool.

Without naming names, the funniest thing ive ever seen evolving leet speak was when a guy applied for a job with my company. On his cv, for all the world to see, along with his qualifications (and in this case, general lack thereof) he had stated
"I am completely fluent in leet speak"
had me in hysterics for weeks that....

Just like when you write "teh" instead of the in a sentence it means that you're making fun of stupid people
"Omg i win teh game!"
Or !!!!111 - another typing mistake that people make on purpose...
4tw means "for the win"
Okay, thanks for clearing that up
I believe 'pwn' was also shorthand for 'Pistol owned' in an early deathmatch FPS. One of the games where it was actually hard to kill someone with pistols unlike CS

As much as I despise terms like 'lol' and 'omg'... they make sense because they are useful to people who are too lazy to learn how to type properly because they serve as acronyms and save time.
Words like 'pwn' are used by morons, teenagers, and adults who want to appear as if they are a moron or a teenager... thus making it 'leetspeak'.
Not really.
Perhaps this was true years ago.
I type at 140 WPM and am very serious about grammar and spelling. I make sure to be articulate in everything I say.
I still use "lol", "omg", "wtf", and "pwn."
Like he said ^^

Edited by: Sultan on 01/09/2005 23:59:14 It never fails to amuse me to hear folks on TeamSpeak actually trying to pronounce typo'd words rather than reverting to the original word itself when in spoken form.
For example, Pwned (meaning "Owned") gets pronounced as "Pooned" or "Pawned".
I don't know whether I'm in the minority here; I think these deliberate typos should not be transitioned into the spoken word since they have no real basis there.

This, sir, is an oxymoron.
You really are too uptight.
Times are changing. I'm surprised you dont surf the net on a typewriter by candlelight. Judging people by things like this is very shallow.

Hah, yeh, I still remeber the first time I used LOL in conversation at the pub. Nowadays I notice people do it quite often.
I think 1337 speak is valid, and it's interesting that it crosses over into spoken language. Language continuously changes and evolves, in some ways 1337 (and associated internet/sms acronymns, smilies etc) is just a new language growing to fill a (relatively) new communication space. It just spread rapidly I suspect cos of the vast predominance of written communication on the 'net. Spoken language takes a while to change, but written language can mutate very fast.
Why write or say 'pwn'(around here people say 'pown') intead of own? Well aprat from typos (which happen a lot for someone like me), its not really the same word anymore. Once its bedded in teh language it takes on its own meaning. I no longer think immediately that someone was owned if thrashed in some way in a game, pwned says it much better. -----------------------------------------
