agreed - me and the two pals i'm playing on here with are all from SWG, due to the fact the game's pretty lifeless at the moment - however, i think SWG falls somewhere between EVE and WoW, there are a lot of really smart, mature, community-minded players that will LOVE the complexity of EVE (particularly the research/crafting aspect), but there are an equal amount of l33ts over there, that will be turned off by EVE for the same reasons, and will probably drift towards WoW, EQ2, and CoH.

I got some diff responses:
-The tutiral is too slow -where is my 3d char?
the only thing and valid point is where is my char there is the point where eve lose paying customers. People want a char not a avatar. we are playing in the 2000 now.
That said: I most say I love eve But the start in EVE must be more intresting you can fall asleep during the first time in eve.
someday out of ship walking to instation secenery and textures would be fantastic.

Make it more easy to buy game time cards. I played wow for 4 months (got bored with it) but if i couldn't buy those prepaid cards so easily i would never have started that game. I'm on 14 days trial now but i can't find a shop where i can buy these cards in the netherlands. I'm back in the game, have to get past the boring part (60 jumps for a quest )

I just got into EVE because:
1. I finally ignored the bad review from gamespot.
2. I am tired of the fantasy stuff.
3. I always did like Sci-Fi.
4. I realized EVE was the first real mmorpg world IMO because it is all on one shard and no instancing like in CoH & the community player really do run the game.
5. IMO I just don't care to play a game like WoW with farm animals standing on two legs with them holding swords in their hoofs. And SWG just looks goofy. Sure kids might like it and that's great for them, not me.
6. EVE has true Factions and sides and consequences in the game.
7. It would be nice to get out of the ship like in Freespace, but then it does give me something to look forward too.
8. For the 1st time I'm playing an mmorpg that I play to have fun and not to get to the next level.
So I was searching and searching for a Sci-Fi game and it was here all this time.
CoH is a well put together quality game but is completely repetitive.
WoW reminds me of toon town. Good game for kids I guess.
Neocron is just a plain grind and just the worst made mmorpg you pay for. Good concept, nothing more.
SWG is just too much with the Dog head creatures and really made for someone who likes dancing as a career to be in a game. And Jedi Ganked. Their item crafting and selling was a nice try.
So I went for EVE and could not be happier.
My suggestion to get more Americans/U.S.A. to play it is, advertising and the 14 day Free trial not needing a credit card is good. And since older people would like this game, they should advertise in all the senior people places, they got the time and would love the opportunity to have fun playing a game that will use their minds and creativity.
Our baby boomers need something to do, they are about 55 I think.

Older people? For some reason, I think of my Aunt when you say that and she would quit after her first ganking. ___ I don't hate the Betas and Lifers for being more experienced. I dislike them for being arrogant buggers who thump you if you don't play into their little ego trip. |

Eve is getting more popular on the forums I go to..
it's a good game, the devs are smart, friendly human beings and the game gets better and better. I see no reason why this growth shouldn't continue for a long time.
yay for Eve. Best game ever.. I'm pushing 2 years now and I don't regret any of it. I just hope there's 2 more awesome years in the game's future and maybe 2 after that. ________

However, EVE really needs to do something to tap the US market more. EVE is huge in Europe, but not that big in the US. It could be argued that the US people are far less patient and 'less mature', but I think a nice big ad in the US PC GAMER or maybe a podcast with the PC GAMER dudes, or best yet, and updated review would really help.
Hey Americans arent less mature, we just look at the fun sides of situations

1. You can pay basically any way you want. You can even send them money through the mail in an envelope using PayByCash. 2. Most agent missions hardly require any jumps at all. If you don't like the tutorial quests, skip past them and jump into the game. -- Proud member of the [23].

I came from WoW, was severely bored, and the attitudes of the Devs finally drove me completely away from that game. When you read their forums, and see that the devs have a "we don't even think your input is even worth looking at" attitude, and then when they finally do respond to their community who was outraged over a boneheaded development move and basically calls the very articulate post made by a very sharp community member the rantings of an idiot, you get a very bad taste in your mouth. I checked out lots of other MMO's after that, spending time lurking forums.
When I saw the devs posting comparatively regularly AND interacting actively with their community I was VERY impressed. So impressed that I bought the game without using the trial. So far so good. Seeing several devs in the help chat answering player questions sealed the deal for me, I'm gonna be a customer for a long time.
The fact that the game is balls out great is another plus :P.

To be honoest I don't think so, this has kinda been the case many times in the past where a promotion would occur and there'd be a big influx of players but over the months it tends to drop back again.
I don't really think eve will become truely hugely popular until the devs sit down and work out those nasty design flaws in the game, that improve the gameplay and help keep their long term player base.

What design flaws?
EVE isn't "uber popular" because it doesn't cater to the lowest common denominator. This is a good thing. -- Proud member of the [23].

Sending money in an envelope is never going to happen Sending money to their bankaccount costs 10 euro (because it's in germany) If those cards were just as easy to get as with wow ,then i'm sure more people would play this game. Don't know if thats good because there will be more lag. That mission was just after the tutorial and it was only 20 + jumps (i did see 60 when looking at the starmap but that must have been something else ) I'm glad i didn't skip the tutorial, it was a good one. It's not really difficult to understand this game as some people say (when doing the tutorial)

I joined up a few days ago and have just finished all the tutorials......i'm now convinced that EVE is going to keep me engrossed for months if not years
I've been reading the bits and pieces in PCGAmer over the past months, the GHSC article and the freedom of play article finally convinced me it was worth a look.......spent a few days reading this forum as well which showed how deep the game was(the amount of topics and the level of discussion.
Got a couple of WoWers at work who are also considering switching as well. |

I am currently on the 8th day of the 14 day trial. I have been playing SWG for 2+ years now (since launch) and finally had enough of SOE. Many of us were in it for the Starwars of it, but SOE has effectivly destroyed any resemblence of Starwars from the game.
For any of you Starwars fans out there, the game was based on the story between "The New Hope" and "Empire Strikes Back". Today, the game is saturated with Jedi and the next expansion is based around Obi-Wan giving quests out. You can probably see the inconsistencies with this if you are a fan.
Anyways, Many of us are looking for new entertainment and many of us (from my guild) are now your targets in EVE . From what I have seen so far from the EVE community and what I know of the SWG community, its darn near a match in maturity and patience.
From a personal point of view, I will say that when EVE and SWG were released at the same time, you folks made a better decision than I.
See you in game! Val Oman

Any chance of the ability of older players being able to get back into the rookie help channel again? I used to sit in this channel and answer questions all the time when I was mining (it gave me something to do while mining bistot). I kept busy and answered a lot of questions and helped out a lot of people. Plus I enjoyed doing it. With the increase in the playerbase it would seem that the kinds of things that were asked there routinely would be more prevalent than before.

Originally by: Dark Shikari EVE has a much higher average age and maturity level than almost any other MMORPG.
This mainly has to do with the fact that the learning curve filters out idiots.
Notice the proliferation of good grammar and proper spelling on the boards, compared to say, WoW.
I keep reading that and i agree on the average age. I don't agree on maturity though. This forums are a flamefest and there's hardly any PVPers out there than wont smacktalk after every kill they did.
Face it: We get older but not more mature. Gawd somtimes i think i get more childish with every day i get older.
Edit: Not saying that other forums (like WOW) are better. Official MMO forums are a mess ingeneral.
LOL!!! My ass... not the eve I know. I remember being like 14 playing in the first part of beta. Most of the people I ran across were under 18. Half the 20 yr olds and **** playing eve now sorta grew up with the game. Also if you go on ventrillo and teamspeak you will find that most of our evil people aren't punk kids like carebears think but 30yr olds.

This is clearly a slow burner game. I've been back to Eve now 3 times, not sure, lost count. This maybe my 4th return... Problems I had before were joining big guilds who were really friendly, really helpful, but all with a Master Plan (tm) which lower members never really got to understand...
Result -> I got bored. Went looking for trouble. Found trouble. Got ganked...
I'm back now and playing with just a few friends. Nothing outrageous, but we do have our own Master Plan (tm) and because there are only a few of us it is easier to organise, but slow to execute.
But that's cool. We may never see the plan come into full swing, but at the moment we are having fun just coping with the player characters in Eve: Like the ore thief?s and the adolescent BS rammers in 1.0 space.
For me Eve differentiates itself from other games by being on one big server. You never have the feeling that "better stuff" is happening on the other server/shard/whatever.
Secondly, there is the open PvP concept. Stay in safe space. You are safe (sort of). Go venture somewhere else and the sharks might or might not be waiting...
Lastly, the size. Eve is so huge that every night 10k players get lost on it. Total system counts can go to 250, but not any higher. That's a lot of unoccupied systems to explore and abuse...
What doesn't always make sense is the lack of a meeting point. A space station bar would be nice. A trade area would be cool. Space stations that are Market Towns where you can set up your barrow and sell what you have. That would be cool.
News reports is also irritating. I see a report of such and such politician getting caught doing something he shouldn?t and I think "so what?".... How is this effecting Eve? Or is it a parody of the real world?
One final word: The steady influx of players from China may not be as cool as you think. Have a look on eBay. Most of the Isk sellers there are in fact from China. I have this image of a computer sweat shop where children are forced to strip mine with a badger in 12 hour shifts for a dollar a week... Not pretty...
