Is the in game certification planner worth following? Feels like I'm going all over the place with skill training depending on what I"m flying that day. Was thinking on working on Core skills or am I wasting time? Thanks |

Getting Core Competancy to Improved or Elite is well worthwhile, as the skills affect ALL ships you fly.
The defense certificates are also good ti use as suggestions of related skills that complement each other to increase your tank.
The other certificates are useful to work with as a guideline, but often you won't want half of the skills needed, for example the certificates for T2 weaponry on a ship class require both the short range and long range version, whereas you may have no need for one of the types. The generic "Turret Control/Missile Control" certs and the ship-related weapon system certs that aren't for the T2 versions are good for guidelines.
For example, if you want to skill up missiles for your drake:
"Missile Control" certificate relates to ALL missile systems. It's good to train.
"Cruiser Launcher Control" relates to to both HML and HAM systems. Skip the kind you don't want to train.
"Cruiser Advanced Heavy Launchers" also relates to T2 HML and HAM, so skip the one you don't want.
The best idea would really be to identify what you want to fly, then build a skillplan in EVEmon that includes those ships and the suggested certificates each ship has, then remove the weapon systems you don't want to use.
What did you specifically have in mind for training? |

The Core certificates are definitely worth getting, however, the Targeting one is slightly overdoing it.
First of most ships wont allow you to get that many targets anyway, secondly how often do you really need more than 6 targets? Unless you're flying a Logistics, a Recon or a Capital, I'd leave Targeting at IV. |

What did you specifically have in mind for training?
Alaik, I didn't have anything really planned. I would train for a ship I had using EveMon and set skills to that. Certificates would pop up saying I could claim but I didn't think much of it until I read somewhere in here about having core skill trained to Lvl 5. I have 23 mil Sp kind of spread all over the place, thought I should maybe set a path, and maybe the Core skills would be a good start. |

It's only for HMLs, HAMs got their own certificate.

Getting your Core Skills up to Standard or Improved is a great idea, strongly recommended.
The other certificates are a matter of personal taste. Use them as a suggestion, not a definition.
On my guys, I did go for the "Elite" on some things, but I wound up training skills I never use. I don't PVP so I have never used Electronic Warfare modules, I just trained them to get the "Elite" on Soldier.
Another way I "use" certs is when I'm looking at a new ship. EvEMon gives you a list of the Suggested Certs to go with that ship. That can give you ideas about how to fit the ship, and what it's intended use is. Like the Scorpion is a bad-ass looking ship, but it was designed for Electronic Warfare, not mission running.
If you're going to buckle down and do Certs, I'd say Core then Defense then Gunnery or Missiles (depending on your most-used ship). You don't have to do everything in Core (and etc.) just those that apply to your ship. (ie. Don't bother with Shield Tanking Skills for an Amarr ship.)
