Learn where common chokepoints and current potential camps are: - Use the in-game map and 'pilots in system within 30 minutes' and ship/pod kills per hour to plan your route accordingly. - Use Dotlan for the same purpose, but with links to more information such as kills in system. You can see when and where gatecamps have occurred by checking recent kills in system. - http://evemaps.dotlan.net/
Scout: - Obviously this requires an alt account, or flying with buddies. Send in either a fast scout in an interceptor or other fast frigate, or just use a noob ship and noob alt. - Roaming gangs will typically send in something small and fast to check out a system first. Not just to avoid gatecamps but also to assess possible engagements. Some people actually WANT to find a gatecamp to engage.
Scanning: - if the out gate of the system you are currently in is too far away to scan then you won't know what ships are on that gate. You need to get within scan range either by warping to a celestial nearer to that gate, or by draining cap and warping only part way (look up scanning techniques).
Fly survivable ships: - Haulers must have an mwd and cloak to have any chance of survival. Cloaking Transporters (Tech II) are near impossible to lose to a camp. - Fast aligning ships like frigs and destroyers can get through most camps. Even if you have no chance of 'getting through', you can always try and burn back to the gate and possible escape that way.
Ultimately, there is never a guarantee of safety, and you just have to accept that sooner or later you will die, but you can do your best to make sure it happens as little as possible due to your own mistakes.
There is way more to it than this but blind jumping an Apoc into low sec is never a good idea. Keep on your toes! (a¦á_a¦â) ~ (my spaceblog) http://getoutnastyface.blogspot.co.uk/~ (a¦á_a¦â) |

how not to die on gatecamps ?
Be ready to move quickly.
Remember flying a shuttle through null (trying to get to the new alliance station). Had to run through a known gatecamp and it was a doozy. But before I even got through, made sure to be ready to align quickly to a celestial. Like clockwork the shuttle got shot, but was long gone before they could pod me.
Sometimes you're not going to escape (locked down cold). The best you can do is be ready to escape to fight another day. "In a world of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." ~George Orwell

Train up Evasive Maneuvering to Level IV if you haven't already, this helps with your align time.
Stay calm. if you jump into a gatecamp you have 60 seconds of jump cloak to work out the best route of escape.
If there are no bubbles and you are in a frigate, you can usually just select a celestial and warp to. They won't have the time to lock you before you warp unless they're using remote sensor boosters. I would suggest warping to a random range, in case they chase.
If there is a bubble, then you have two choices, burn back to gate and jump back through, or try and burn out of bubble. You need a Microwarp Drive fitted for these to work. Which one you choose depends on how close you are to the edge of the bubble. Use your 60 seconds to see which would be the quickest route.
Sometimes, with all your preparations, you'll still be out of luck. So if you know you're going to die, try and get your pod out. Spamming warp to a celestial while scrammed will pass along to your pod, so when your ship dies, your pod will instawarp there.
Finally, as has been already mentioned, get a scout. Also, don't fly anything bigger than a destroyer through lowsec/nullsec unscouted, because you *will* die eventually. |

When you say 'align quickly to a celestial', do you mean 'hold cloak, select celestial, warp to x km'? A shuttle is unstoppable without bubbles, it simply aligns too fast to be locked before it's already entered warp.

Shuttle was used not so much for the speed but because of the v-e-r-y high chance of the ship being destroyed (chokepoint...had to go through that gate).
It was a ride of my life and funny even -- got through, aligned...KABOOM. Wasn't escaping that camp with a ship intact.
And you already answered your assumption "already entered warp". When aligning you are not at warp speed yet when decloaking. And yes shuttles do get blown up even without bubbles. We don't all have level 5 Navigation skills 2 weeks into the game. Only pods at that stage are instant aligns with quick warps...and how I escaped.
First death was in null in a bubble camp (multiple bubbles at that). Managed to get out to some asteroid and ice field to witness my first ABC ores as a 3 day old newbie. Was down there for a good bit of time, but coming back...gatecamp of all gatecamps...BOOM.
It's easy to sneak in and remain in, it's the gates that kill. 10001 things happen from lag (this was back in 2010, when it was severe and CCP was doing the load testing to try to fix it) to the gate not even responding (so true in Amarr). Play a real game which doesn't rely on cheesy mechanics for "PvP".
Gate camps are in many ways very similar to spawn camping in other games. That is, you come in virtually blind, encounter a large, prepared force bent on annihilating you. Like others pointed out, there's ways around it. Start an alt account - something I refuse to do, paying more money just to deal with a crappy design choice? No thank you. Fly with buddies, which is not always practical. Etc., etc.
Bottom line though, it's a flawed, silly game mechanic that in any non-niche game would have been laughed out of town a very, very, very long time ago.
EDIT: It is also worth noting that both "get a scout" and "use an alt" suggestions that get passed around as "solutions" aren't really solutions at all - *someone* is still going to die, just not you. It'll be a buddy or an alt. Either way, you likely lose something to the camp. Some solution... |

Evasive Maneuvering IV should be sufficient, and that's a day of training, and one well spent if you're going anywhere *near* nullsec. No other Navigation skills contribute towards align time. |

Empire gate camps are a non-issue once you get the hang of it. Condor will always be vulnerable to disco camps (smart bombs) but with a couple of nanofiber internal structures in your lows and a tank built on resists/speed, not sig radius increasing or movement gimping buffer you should be able to select the next gate and click jump and be off before anything can lock you.
Clear your overview of ships, the only thing you need to see on your OV for traveling is the gates and stations. Anything else is just a chance for something to go wrong. Honestly you can even turn your brackets off, the only info you need is the next gate. On that note always have a route set, so that the outgate shows yellow. You dont need to be thinking about which gate to click while your cloak timer is burning down.
Now that everything is clean, and your ship aligns as fast as you can make it, jump into lowsec select the gate that is yellow and click "jump". Thats it, anything else is a distraction that will just get in the way.
If this still doesn't work then you could try upgrading to a cruiser with a 10MN MWD and cloak and a couple of warp stabs and whatever buffer you can fit. The cloak MWD trick is an awesom tool that all Eve pilots would benefit from learning. I can move a BS around lowsec this way now which is very handy sometimes, and you can use a sigil or wreath to move PI safely around in lowsec. This is much easier to train for than a BR

There's other skills that are more important that early, and there's only 1 skill to level at a time. Navigation skills are lower down the list of priorities if you're not an interceptor/cloaky pilot (which from day one I wouldn't play, not into glass cannon and rogue classes). Tanky pilots spend more time on getting shields up, as their ship isn't going to turn quickly even if they had Evasive Maneuvering X.
